1 Overview

Newly designed with Purley platform, the two-socket Inspur NF5280M5 can pack more stability

performance and scalability into a 2U chassis, running even more workloads for 24×7 hours, and

gaining faster business insights. NF5280M5 have an industry leading balance of performance,

capability and scalability, with high performing processor up to 28 cores or 3.6GHz working

frequency, flexible storage configurations including up to 38x 2.5” or 20x 3.5” drives with a wide

selection of drive sizes and types, and resilient expansion capability with up to 10 PCIE3.0 slots, to

fit for a wide range of applications and workloads as enterprise applications, cloud computing, big

data, database, HPC, etc.

2 Features

With the design for a wide range of applications and workloads, NF5280M5 offers numerous

features in performance, scalability, availability, manageability, security and efficiency as following:

Performance

The NF5280M5 provides numerous features to boost performance and reduce costs:

Integrated with the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor product family with up to 28-core

processors, up to 2666 MHz memory speeds, and up to 10.4 GT/s UPI interconnect links.

Support for up to two processors, 56 cores, and 112 threads allows to maximize the concurrent

execution of multithreaded applications.

Support up to four GPUs in a 2U chassis, dramatically improve the system performance for the

HPC, deep learning, machine learning application.

Up to 2666 MHz memory speeds with two DIMMs per channel running at 2666 MHz to help

maximize system performance.

Support NVM Express disk drive, allowing host hardware and software to fully exploit the levels

of parallelism possible in modern SSDs. As a result, NVM Express reduces I/O overhead and

brings various performance improvements in comparison to previous logical-device interfaces,

including multiple, long command queues, and reduced latency.

Up to 100Gb/s network adapter, tremendously reduce the IO latency and improving the

bandwidth for low-latency and high throughput application such as HPC

With Intel® Integrated I/O Technology, the PCI Express 3.0 controller is integrated into the

Intel® Xeon® processor SP product family. This helps to dramatically reduce I/O latency and

increase overall system performance.

Support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology accelerating processor and graphics performance for

peak loads, automatically allowing processor cores to run faster than the rated operating

frequency if they’re operating below power, current, and temperature specification limits.

Whether the processor enters into Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and the amount of time the

processor spends in that state depends on the workload and operating environment

Intel® Virtualization Technology features enable faithful abstraction of the full prowess of Intel®

CPU to a virtual machine (VM). All software in the VM can run without any performance or

compatibility hit, as if it was running natively on a dedicated CPU. Live migration from one

Intel® CPU generation to another, as well as nested virtualization, is possible.

The NF5280M5 provides excellent scalability as following to fit a wide-range of application and

works:

Up to 1.5TB with 24×64GB RDIMMs and two processors; Up to 1.5TB with 12×128GB LDIMMs

and two processors; Up to 192GB with 12×16GB NVDIMM and two processors;

Provide 2.5”×24 or 3.5”×12 hot swap SATA/SAS front disk drive bay and 2.5”×4+ 3.5”×4 hot

swap SATA/SAS rear disk drive bay.

Flexible and scalable internal storage provides up to 200TB for capacity-optimized storage

configurations by using 10 TB 3.5-inch hard disk drives or up to 38 SFF drives for performance-

optimized storage configurations in a 2U rack form factor.

One OCP mezz slot is available for network capability expansion with 25Gb/s or 1Gb/10Gb/s

adapter.

The server offers up to ten PCI Express 3.0 I/O expansion slots with eight of them in the rear

and two optional PCIE slots by using OCU link for PCIE expansion in the front within a 2U rack

form factor.

Availability

The NF5280M5 provides many features to simplify serviceability and increase system uptime:

NVDIMM enable using volatile memory during normal operation and dump the contents into

non-volatile memory if the power fails, using an on-board backup power source. Volatile

memory is faster than non-volatile; it is byte-addressable; and it can be written to arbitrarily,

without concerns about wear and device lifespan.

Support memory protection technologies as ECC, memory mirroring, memory rank spare, etc.

Support Tri-mode RAID adapter, providing hardware-level protection solution for NVME SSD

drives.

The server provides redundant hot-swap power supplies and hot-swap redundant fans to

provide availability for business-critical applications.

Support continuously running in the high-temperature environment with up to 45 degree. The

feature can effectively help lower the customer TCO and move towards a green energy-efficient

data center.

Manageability

The NF5280M5 provides numerous management features to simplify the operation work:

Tool-less removal provides easy access to upgrades and serviceable parts, such as processors,

memory DIMMs, and adapter cards.

The server includes a remote management feature to monitor the status of main components

as processor, memory, disk and fans.

Efficiency

The NF5280M5 offers the following energy-efficiency features to save energy, reduce operational

costs, and contribute to the green environment:

To reduce the power consumption, motherboard of NF5280M5 designs a large current

dedicated high-speed channel, optimizing the power supply with better PCB board optimization.

Intel®ligent temperature control technology brings in stability and reliability for the system,

effectively reducing the NF5280M5 power consumption and noise by 17% comparing with

previous generation of product

NF5280M5 uses low-power components with highest efficiency conversion rate, saving up to

20% than other solution. It can also choose the high energy efficiency titanium level power

supply with a conversion rate of more than 96%, helping to reduce the power consumption of

data center and achieve the green energy saving.

Inspur power consumption management technology can help to monitor and control the system

power consumption accurately for users with PTAS and Node Management 3.0 technology.

Security

Support TPM which can securely store artifacts used to authenticate the platform. These

artifacts can include passwords, certificates, or encryption keys. A TPM can also be used to

store platform measurements that help ensure that the platform remains trustworthy.

NF5280M5 can implement firmware encryption/digital signature to prevent illegal writes.

NF5280M5 can fully support the trusted computing system and strengthen the security of the

system. Embedded hardware encryption chip allows users to select algorithm according to

requirements.

Supports the locking design in the chassis lid, prohibiting illegal operation.

3 Logical Architecture

NF5280M5 logic architecture is showed as following. Each processor has six memory channel with

two DIMMs per channel. Four OCU links are supported by CPU1 for NVME SSD connection or

front PCIE slots expansion. Two SATA/PCIE M.2 SSD are supported by PCH. PCIE slot1 x24 is

provided by CPU0, while PCIE slot2 x24 is provided both CPU0(x8) and CPU1(x16) and PCIE slot

x24 is supported by CPU1 with x16 transfer rate. OCP mezz slot is offered by CPU0. See more as

Expanded I/O. 48 lanes of PCIE3.0 bandwidth and throughput for demanding I/O intensive

workload.

Intel® Ultra Path Interconnect(Intel® UPI): Up to three Intel® UPI channels increase the

scalability of the platform to as many as eight-socket server, as well as improve the inter-CPU

bandwidth for I/O intensive workload versus previous generation.

Intel® Advanced Vector Extension 512(Intel® AVX-512): with double the flops per clock cycle

compared to previous generation AVX2, Intel® AVX-512 boosts performance and throughput

for the most demanding computational tasks in application, such as modeling and simulation,

data analytics and machine learning, data compression, visualization, and digital content

creation.

NOTE:

Only half DIMMs are available when only one processor is installed

NF5280M5 can support up to two 205W processors.

6.2 Memory

The NF5280M5 supports up to 24 DIMMs when two processors are installed and 12 DIMMs when

one processor is available. Each processor has six memory channels and two DIMMs per channel

with up to 2666MHz working frequency. Support LDIMM, NVDIMM RDIMM memory and Apache

Pass.

The following memory protection technologies are supported:

ECC (Error Correcting Code): handles minor amounts of data corruption via multi-bit error

detection and single-bit error correction. Depending on the system, ECC can help identify failing

DIMMs

Memory Mirroring: provides protection against uncorrectable memory errors that would

otherwise result in system failure. In this mode, the system maintains two copies of all data. If

an uncorrectable memory error occurs, the system automatically retrieves the good data from

the mirrored (redundant) copy. The system continues to operate normally without any user

intervention. By providing added redundancy in the memory sub-system, Memory Mirroring

provides the greatest protection against memory failure not corrected by ECC, SDDC, DDDC,

and online spare memory

Memory Rank Sparing: provides protection against persistent DRAM failure. It tracks

excessive number of correctable errors and copies the contents of an unhealthy rank to an

available spare rank in advance of multi-bit or persistent single-bit failures that may result in

future uncorrectable faults. It does not identify or disable individual failed DRAMs, but instead

it disables the DIMM or rank. Since a DIMM or a rank is needed to perform sparing, this

technique reduces the total amount of available memory by the amount of memory used for

sparing. Sparing can only handle one failure per DIMM. DIMMs that are likely to receive a

fatal/uncorrectable memory error are automatically removed from operation, resulting in less

system downtime

If memory mirroring is used, then DIMMs must be installed in pairs (a minimum of one pair per each

processor), and both DIMMs in a pair must be identical in type and size. If memory rank sparing is

used, then a minimum of one quad-rank DIMM or two single-rank or dual-rank DIMMs must be

installed per populated channel (the DIMMs do not need being identical). In rank sparing mode,

one rank of a DIMM in each populated channel is reserved as spare memory. The size of a rank

varies depending on the DIMMs installed.

6.3 Storage

The NF5280M5 server can provide a variety choice of storage configuration. For application such

as cloud storage and big data analysis, NF5280M5 provides 12*3.5 front disk and 4*3.5 rear disk

with 10TB capacity each disk to fulfill the requirement. Customer can also choose NVMe SSD for

IO intensive application such as database, enterprise software. NF5280M5 support up to 24*2.5

front disks and 4*2.5 rear disks, providing a great balance of performance and cost. The following

lists the disk drive bays and disk supported by NF5280M5.

6.4 RAID adapter

NF5280M5 offers a high performance as well as cost effective raid solution with Inspur developing

raid adapters such as PM8060(1GB) or PM8060(2GB), which are highly compatible with Inspur

server and provide an excellent performance. Onboard SATA controller are also supported with

three OCU link connectors, providing up to 12 SATA disks connection and can be configured as

raid 0/1/10. PCIe profile raid adapters with up to 4GB cache or 12Gb/s rate are supported as

NF5280M5 provide an industry leading PCIe expansion capability with up to ten PCIe slots,

All the PCIE slots are delivered in the form of PCIE riser card. Room1 and Room2 can deploy PCIE

riser1 with x8*3 slots, riser2 with x16*1+x8 or 2*3.5’ disk drive bay, while Room3 can be configured

PCIE riser3 with x8*2, riser4 with x16*1 or 4*2.5’ disk drive bay. Each room can be deployed

independently without interference, providing an agile IO expansion capability for customer.

6.13 Systems management

NF5280M5 integrates BMC remote management module compliance to IPMI2.0, supporting KVM

over IP, which is independent to CPU BIOS and Operation System and support an initiative GUI in

English. With the remote management module, administrator can monitor the status of

CPU/Memory/PSU/FAN and the other key components in terms of voltage, speed, temperature by

remote access to the server through local browser, better evaluating the risk and simplifying facility

deployment, management and maintenance. The manager system can support the following

functions:

Remote management. Achieve remote control through the KVM over IP, Serial over LAN and

virtual media to manage the server including power on/off, firmware upgrade.

Alert management. Collect the alerting information and process this message automatically.

Status monitor: Achieve the status monitor from power supply, processor, disks, memory, fans,

etc.

Facility information management. Provide the asset information such as facility version, serial

number, manufacturer of processor, memory, disk, NIC, etc.

Customers can return defective parts to the designated Inspur site after submitting a service

request. Inspur may, at its discretion, repair or replace the defective parts. Repair or replacement
