White Team Takes a Repeat by Sydnie Hoelz and Madison McNulty Two teams, two nights, one shared and compas- sionate goal. A tradition in its 74th year, the Maroon and White teams were more than ready to meet on the Pop Vernon gym floor and battle it out in two nights of alternative sports, skits and dancing in an annual event known as Sports Night. This two- night fiasco has grown tremendous- ly since it’s early days consisting of a game of broom hockey and basket- ball. “Your Time is Now”, was a general theme that proved a little chal- lenging for both teams to incorporate into their scenery and skit this year. Bounc- ing back from last year’s loss, the Maroon team was ready and hungry for a win, but the White team would not give up without a fight. Captain Destinee Mincer, a devoted Roonie all four years, and her group of close knit officers were eager for April 7th and 8th to show the Whiteys what they were all about. After a break in a four year win- ning streak, a restart of the repeat was on Destinee’s mind. “I’m more than ready to take on the White team,” she boasted. “I’m always confi- dent in my team.” Sophomore boy, Sophomore Danny Dalbey was a first time Sports Night participant. He found it as one of the coolest and most stressful experiences of his high school career. “The Maroon team is like a family to me. I always have someone to back me up and make me feel confident,” He said with a chuckle. Being a cheerleader, he had to deal with the anxiet- ies of being the first performance of the night. When asked about being nervous, his eyes grew big. “Duhh,” he said. The Maroon team chose recogniz- able Freshman Pick symbols, “Maroon Mockingjays” and “District 17”, the graduating year of the Seniors. White Cap- tain Alyssa DePonte chose “New Years” as her unique sym- bol. The team coined the phrase, “Three cheers, it’s White’s year!” A new member of the White team, Fresh- man Olivia Tres- palacios beamed when asked what it was like to be a part of Sports Night. “It’s so much fun,” she stated. “I’ve been waiting to do this since I was very little. I’m very happy to be on White. Even though Sports Night is a little stressful, it’s all worth it in the end.” For three straight weeks, both teams created routines for Op- tional, Slow and Fast Finale, Cheer- leading, Jazz, Acts and Skit. Sporting events such as Volleyball and the Junior Relay were also practiced. Sophomores take on the dolly race. Freshmen on both teams had to take on the daunting task of the Fresh- man spoon race, considered one of the hardest races for Sports Night. On night one of competi- tion, the scores of the night were 261 to 282, in favor of the White team. The second night, the Maroon team was the victor, but in the end it wasn’t enough to catch up. The White team won by seventeen points overall, 559 to 542. While Ma- roon won seven out of the ten sports, the White team still dominated in the creativity aspects of the night. “I am so proud of my win- ning White team,” Alyssa DePonte said. “It’s an amaz- ing thing, but I couldn’t have done it alone. I had a lot of support through- out the process. I can’t wait to see next year.” Both teams dedicated an aspect of their Optional performance to their late classmate Noah Koval who passed away in December. Maroon and White sported his initials on their shirts in his memory. Whether wearing White or Maroon, Sports Night is always an event that peps up the town of River- side in the spring- time. Alumni from either team or even families just learning about the event always are ready to root for their favorite team. Those in the crowd who recite the Alma Mater chant with the Ma- roon team or do the White team check before Optional. There is no denying that the spirit and loyalty to Riverside High School never dies out. The Maroon and White Teams have a pre- welcoming ceremony cheer off.

What ultimately made you decide to do Sports Night?

I decided to pick because people said I wouldn’t. People made it seem like it’s a bad thing or weird. You can do anything you want regardless of what people think.

What do you plan on doing for college?

I plan on attending a four year college. I didn’t choose exactly which one, but I’m going to pursue a career in education.

How do you want to be remembered at RHS?

I want people to think about the things I’ve done and the smiles I put on people’s faces. I want people to understand life is what you make it so make it the best it can be.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself teaching in an urban district. I would be finished or finishing my Masters in Education Administration. I also want to be hired as a coach in the district that I teach in.

There were so many moves that already happened in the NFL free agency! How about Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboy’s former quarterback) retir-ing? Or the big surprise of Eddie Lacy (Running Back) going to Seattle Seahawks to replace Mar-shawn Lynch. (Who is supposed to be coming out of retirement to play for the Raiders). Just imag-ine the damage that Brandon Marshall

is going to do with the New York Gi-ants alongside Odell Beckham Jr. “I have been double teamed for years as a top wide receiver, now with Odell Beck-ham Jr. on my team, I will get more chances at lesser cornerbacks,” said Brandon Marshall. With the dy-namic duo of both of these top wide re-ceivers, the defense has to worry terribly about both of them, instead of one in separate games. Brandon Marshall has had

100 or more catches in his past seasons only having 59 this season due to being double teamed on numerous occa-sions. Odell Beck-ham Jr. has had double that amount of catches this sea-son. Now both of the wide receivers take more coverage from each other, including the tight end and the third wide receiver, due to their quickness and great ability to catch. Another big move that was

worth talking about is Desean Jack-son moving to the Tampa Bay Bucca-neers. This wide receiver will be a huge help and will pull up the offense tremendously due to his quickness. It will definitely help the third year player,

by Hector Garciaquarterback Ja-mis Winston, and wide receiver Mike Evans, in a similar situation the Giants have with Brandon Marshall. Those are just some of the free agency moves that have happened be-fore the NFL draft set to take place at the end of April.

What motivated you to become a teacher?

I liked the idea of becoming a coach and I like working with young people. I was only going to teach for one year. I was planning on becoming an engineer.

What do you like to spend your time doing outside of school?

Surfing and going on adventures with my family.

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?

As a teacher, preparing lots of students who have been successful in college. At my summer job, on beach patrol, I’ve saved a lot of lives.

If you could time travel, where would you go?

I would like to see dinosaurs, so I guess I’d like to go back 85 million years.

What is your all time favorite movie?

Good Will Hunting, it was the first movie that I ever saw and appreciated as a work of art, not just a two hour entertainment session.

What is your most embarrassing memory?

I overslept my music appreciation midterm and I showed up halfway into it and asked the teacher if I could take it starting right then and in front of three hundred people she told me, “The only advice I can give you is to buy an alarm clock.”

Members of the RHS Drill Team headed to Lenape High School on March 18th for a competition. They had a very successful outcome. Dominique McDermott led the armed squad team to first place. She stated, “It felt amaz-ing to win first place because I worked hard to prove that I could be a Com-mander”. Freshman Layane Neves won third place in LET 1 Squad and An-thony Moyer won first place in knock out. Knockout took place at the end of the competition with cadets who bought a ticket. A big forma-tion was formed and commands were given. Whoever was the last person stand-ing that did not mess up on any drill com-mands won. The drill team hasn’t won in a while, so congrats to them!

The Interact Club held it’s 7th annual Charity Bake Sale on Tuesday, April 11th. Tables were set up in the court-yard and out front and behind the elementary school. A variety

of baked goods and ice cream floats were sold. The money raised at the bake sale will go to the Good Counsel Home moms that are moving out of the home. This money will help them get

started on their own and help with purchasing a variety of house-hold items for the home. The in-teract club raised almost $300 this year to benefit the women.

On average twenty-eight people die from drinking and driving every day. That is one per-son every 53 min-utes. 52 percent of people in the United States engage in drunk driving. Every 90 seconds a person is injured in a drinking and driv-ing accident. In order to get the message out to not drink and drive, Officer Cicali put together a film. It was directed by Mario Cerrito. Nineteen students were involved playing major parts all the way to extras. Even two faculty members were involved, Mr. Ryan Varga and Ms. Emily Nicola, who played the dad and mom. Local au-thorities came to help. This included Delran and River-side Fire depart-ment, Riverside Emergency Squad, Riverside Police

Department, and O&J Repair Company. Officer Cicali did a great job put-ting the film together and getting out a great message. He said, “The film was a lot of fun and I hope I encourage everyone to not drink and drive and also be responsi-ble”. Cameron Jen-kins, Police Explorer Captain, also a major character named Jeff in the film said, “It really was a great ex-perience and I really think it’s going to get the message through about drinking and driving”. The plot of the movie is Jeff con-vinces Mike, played by Ricky Loveland,

to go to a party and drink, instead of going to his mother’s birthday dinner, which end in deadly conse-quences. This film will be submitted to the U-Got-Brains website, which is spe-cifically for drunk driving aware-ness. Anyone in New Jersey can be a part of the competition and the top film will get a driving simulator. The film will be shown at the school May 5th during the prom assembly.

If you are planning on going to the movies soon I highly recom-mend seeing Beauty and the Beast. The directors and producers did an amazing job of keeping the same timeless elegance of the original 1991 film. The cast did an amaz-ing job of bringing everything to life and making the movie seem so real. Of course there’s plot twists and heart wrenching moments but everything came together so well. Go to a movie theater near you and see this incredible movie before it’s too late!

This year, Passover is celebrated from April 10th through the 18th where as Easter is celebrated on Sunday, April 16th. What is Passover? Passover celebrates the eman-cipation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The word “Passover” comes from the Hebrew word “Pesach”. It is called Passover because God passed over the first Jewish homes when killing the Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover Eve. How is Easter different? Easter is celebrated on one day of the year for the Christians to acknowledge the resur-rection of Christ. The word Easter comes from a pagan figure called “Eastre”, or the goddess of spring. Passover always includes a large ritual dinner and Easter includes large egg hunts. Depending on your own preference, you may spend your April in one of these unique ways.

People of all different ranks in the class of JROTC got the lucky op-portunity to go on a JROTC Junior Achievement Lead-ership Trip. They learned about many businesses. The mentors touched on informa-

tion about college debt for the JROTC cadets and hands on activities were com-pleted with their mentors. Dominique McDermott said “It was definitely a trip worth taking. It taught me new leadership skills and traits to keep with

myself as I grow up and how to be a successful adult.” The cadets learned many new things and were given advice that will stick with them through their whole lives. It helped them become more confident and build their people skills.

The NBA season is coming to an end but, it’s al-most time for some playoff basketball. Eight teams from both the Western Conference and Eastern Conference will soon compete and fight their hard-est to be the best team in the NBA in June. However, for some teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, Minne-sota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lak-ers, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and the Sacramento Kings it’s time to get ready for the offseason and come back better next season. Meanwhile there’s a deep com-petition in the West for the 8th seed

between the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, and New Orleans Pelicans. In the East the 8th seed is being fought over by the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, Chi-cago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and Char-lotte Hornets. This season will most certainly come down to the wire and get even more exciting on Saturday, April 15th when the road to the finals begins. The Finals (on ABC) starts on Thursday June 1st. This is where the best teams from each conference play each other in a seven game series and whoever wins will get the Larry O’Brien Trophy. The NBA Finals ends on June 18th.

The 2017 baseball team is ready to defend their division title. With hard work and dedica-tion nothing will stop them from get-ting it. Coached by Gary Herron, the boys had a pretty good season last year going to the BCSL tournament championship and

of course winning the division. With returning seniors Grant Moore, RJ Murphy and John McElroy they are ready to make their last season the best. The first couple of weeks of prac-tice were really tough with snow on the ground, but

it didn’t stop the baseball team from having 5ams and good hard practices to get ready for their season opener. The boys are now 3-2 with wins against Florence, Leap Academy and Cedar Creek . The boys hope to con-tinue winning with some big games coming up.

The 2017 Riverside Softball team will be just as exciting to watch as it was in 2016. The Rams lost some key seniors, but retain a good core of play-ers led by Brianna Fritz, Alexis Davis, Hailey Russell, and Gabby Vazquez. The Lady

Rams will be look-ing to build off of a 19-5 campaign which also included a trip to the Central Jersey Group 1 Fi-nal and a trip to the BCSL Tournament Final. The Lady Rams will be under the veteran leader-ship of head coach Crystal Barbour.

The 2017 track team is feel-ing really positive this year. With the loss of many se-niors last year, freshmen have joined and occupied the empty spots. Coach Marc Ballantyne said “A lot of learning has to be done with the amount of fresh-man we have. This season is up in the air. Staying positive is the main key”.

Some of the senior leaders feel that this season will be one to remember and love their team-mates. “The team always thinks about the team first rather than themselves,” said Matt Orfe. While the track team keeps the team aspect of it, some seniors feel there is room for improvement individually. “I just want to get better. I

want to be the best I can be this year. This is my last year to do it big,” said Senior Captain Sierra Arm-strong. Senior Cap-tain Kevin Rae said “We will be unde-feated and we will win the Division. I love Track, it’s a mixture of doing something you love with people you love.” The track team is really

something special and something to watch. Especially Juniors Jeanquai

Morton and Jody Johnson took home gold medals at the Moorestown Invita-tional.

There were also a few mile-stones recently on the team. Brianna Fritz notched her 100th career strike-out and Aleis Davis is two hits away from her 100th for her career. Make sure to come out and support the Lady Rams

Jeanquai Morton and Jody Johnson sporting their gold medals.

Many schools provide countless classes for students which al-low them to have a feel of what they’re interested in. The careers class, run by Ms. Croneburger and assisted by Miss Swenson, does just that. This com-munity based instruction was brought up about nine years ago, but students and faculty haven’t been able to explore and venture out with their ideas until this year. This particu-lar class advances its’ students in com-munication skills with their commu-nity, as well as test their abilities with real life work sce-narios.

Students are also given instructions that relate to delivery and organization. For example, many of the few tasks given for an indi-vidual would be: help deliver mail or papers to teachers, sort/make bathroom passes for every homeroom every given month, clean/sweep down the library, sort/orga-nize books, and even sorting and packaging nurse supplies re-ceived. Some students are given order forms for teachers involv-ing foods and then the foods are delivered from the cafeteria. “Getting a free period for ‘Work day Wednesday’ to get out of school is always pretty cool,” Sopho-more Ricky Loveland states, one of the stu-

dents in this class. ”It really helps in the long run when you apply for a job and you have past experience doing these responsibili-ties, and it really helps with getting kids out of trouble giving them some-thing to do.” There are four steps the class progresses through to reach their goal of advancing in these verbal and communicative skills. The fresh-men get an ex-ploration course, which gives them a feel of working. Sopho-mores are given job scenarios on campus. Juniors have job scenarios in the commu-

nity with a teacher, similar to a field trip setting. They are tasks outside of school giving stu-dents a chance to be placed in real world surroundings. Not many seniors join the class since most are al-ready working at this point in their life. Each student even gets a personal-ized name tag to get access in and out of the building and into

the Elementary School. It’s a very interesting course, especially for anyone that’s interested in get-ting their hands on work related to getting ahead of the game. Like per-forming your best at those summer jobs, this Careers class is something to really look into joining.

Spring has sprung! This means it’s time to put away the heavy coats, sweaters and scarves and hop into something a little more weather appropriate. This spring, bodysuits seem to very popular, as well as t-shirts with v-shaped cuts at the neckline to the middle of the chest and ribbed t-shirts. Bralettes layered under clothing to give outfits a pop of color and lace is something to try also. High neck tank tops are super popular too. And for when it’s still a little chilly, throw on a light jacket to complete your outfit, or a denim jacket, possibly covered in pins for extra flare. When it comes to accessories, chokers and “dad hats” seem to be the top trends of 2017 so far. There seems to be an innumerable variety of chokers this year in all different styles, sizes and colors. You will be seeing a lot of reflective sunglasses in all the colors of the rainbow! To carry your things, you’re going to want to grab a fanny pack or a brightly colored Fjallraven Kanken backpack. Brands you will be seeing a lot of this spring will be Victoria’s Secret PINK, Forever 21, and Cham-pion. Now that you have the rundown on fashion trends for Spring 2017, grab your reflective sunglasses and your t-shirts and get ready for the sunny weather dude!

The month that all basketball fans can’t wait for is March. That’s right, March Madness! In the begin-ning of March, 64 teams are selected to compete in the biggest, most excit-ing tournament in the world. While peo-ple at home try to predict the outcome of the tournament, it is close to impos-sible to guess every game corrrect. After the round of 64, it is the round of 32, then the sweet sixteen, then the elite eight, then the final four, and last comes the championship

game. The final four teams were the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Oregon Ducks, and the UNC Tar-heels. The Bull-dogs and The Tar-heels advanced the to the finals. It was a close game but the Tarheels got re-venge from last year and won the trophy. This gives UNC their fifth title in school history. This crazy tournament brings intense non-stop basketball which explains the name of this tournament.

Passariellos is an Italian restaurant right in Moorestown, NJ. As you walk in the staff greets you with a warm welcoming hello as you are waiting for a waiter. On the menu you can find salad, pastas, pizza, and sandwiches. I usually go for their ceasar salad, which is phe-nomenal. Also, you pay up front so when you finish eat-ing you can just get up, pay and be on your way. They have a 4 out of 5 star rating on Yelp. So if your looking for fast service and a family oriented res-taurant I recommend Passariellos.
