Page 1 Website:http://whitlock.castlewebs.net/wfa/index.htm You will see by the additions lists in this issue that most of my time lately has been spent cataloguing certificates. Work on the great collection of vital statistics that Lawrence Otis has been downloading continues and I have had to put aside the job to write the December Newsletter. The latest additions to the Certificate collection have provided great information on many families so please feel to request copies of any that may be of help in your research. I continue to scan our collection and still have several months work left to complete that project. I still have several thousand XMISC items to scan or convert from the mail files to XMISC items. I am also looking at how to bring the website in house, completely revise it and maintain it myself. This will be another major job but hopefully a worthwhile one. I have not heard for some time from Dick Whitlock who set up and has maintained the website from the beginning and am hoping he is okay. He has done a great job expanding the knowledge of our research but I think it is time for me to step up and assume this job myself. Our census collection continues to grow but, as so much of this information is now fairly easily available elsewhere, this project has received less priority and I mainly add to it when I am accessing census information for research I am doing. The Birth Index has not seen much activity lately either as there always seems to be some major job that requires more priority. There are now over 21,000 births in the index and it is a great resource tool. For confidentiality purposes only births up to 1900 have been downloaded to the website. All indexes are available for download if anyone wishes access to them. I have done an article in this issue regarding Mary Whitlock of Pitton, Wiltshire born 1808. This follows up on the article in the September 2009 issue about her son George and corrects our assumption that her father was William Whitlock as it turns out her father was actually Robert Whitlock. As mentioned, the Certificates list is fairly lengthy in this issue and includes great collections of death certificates from Michigan, Pennsylvania and North Carolina and birth certificates from Michigan and Delaware. Our continued thanks to Lawrence Otis for seeking these out and forwarding disks of this information to me for cataloguing and adding to our collection. We now have images of over 2050 birth, marriage and death certificates of Whitlocks or descendants available for researchers. A great research tool. In the Photograph additions there are great photos of grave sites from Michigan, including PH1110 which is the grave of Lizzie Whitlock the original “fat lady” from the Barnum and Bailey circus. Our thanks also to William Ogden Whitlock for PH1104, the photo of the portrait of William Whitlock (1761-1836) shipowner of New York that appears in this issue. There are also a couple of Whitlock street signs we found on our trip to California this summer. Always interesting to see if we can figure out who Whitlock streets are named after. I have been very pleased to make contact with Anna Jean Bradley who descends from Jonas & Sally (Whitlock) Smale (M1835) Black Torrington, DEV. (See ML380 in this issue and photos on page 14) I had researched this part of the WHITLOCK01 chart in the 1970's when John G. Smale of California had contacted me. It is great to find another descendant working on the same part of the family. I look forward to sharing research with Anna Jean. More Michigan information is also listed in the XMISC additions including marriage index entries for several Michigan counties (X6757-X6770). The emails from Peter Leitch Whitlock & Edith Carlson (X6779) had exciting news that researchers had uncovered the surname of Zalmon Whitlock (1795-1856)’s wife, Sarah [Gorham]. Her surname has been missing from our files and it was great to finally be able to fill in that missing blank. Edith Carlson explains that researchers found the following on ancestry.com:

Work on the great collection of vital statistics that Lawrence Otis has been downloadingcontinues and I have had to put aside the job to write the December Newsletter. The latest additions to theCertificate collection have provided great information on many families so please feel to request copies ofany that may be of help in your research.

I continue to scan our collection and still have several months work left to complete that project. I still haveseveral thousand XMISC items to scan or convert from the mail files to XMISC items. I am also looking athow to bring the website in house, completely revise it and maintain it myself. This will be another majorjob but hopefully a worthwhile one. I have not heard for some time from Dick Whitlock who set up and hasmaintained the website from the beginning and am hoping he is okay. He has done a great job expanding theknowledge of our research but I think it is time for me to step up and assume this job myself.

Our census collection continues to grow but, as so much of this information is now fairly easily availableelsewhere, this project has received less priority and I mainly add to it when I am accessing censusinformation for research I am doing.

The Birth Index has not seen much activity lately either as there always seems to be some major job thatrequires more priority. I have been very pleased to make contact with Anna Jean Bradley who descends from Jonas & Sally(Whitlock) Smale (M1835) Black Torrington, DEV. "The Whitney family of Connecticut and its affiliations: being an attempt to trace the descendants as well inthe female...." Vol. II part 1 Eight Generation pg 1262 entry #8300The following is the entry for the second child of Russell and Mary Jane (Culver) Osborn:

"I, Emma Culver Osborn, b. in New York City 16 Sept. 1834;married there, 13 May 1851, Charles Whitlock,a broker in real estate born at Plymouth, Conn Sept 1826, son of Zalmon and Sarah (Gorham) Whitlock. There were living at 1160 Warren Street, Brooklyn, N.Y in Nov.1873"

This item also provide the date and place of the marriage of this couple, information also missing from thischart. Edith’s Main Line will be printed in the March 2010 issue of the Newsletter.

The Whitlock DNA project continues with some new and exciting information being received. The latestinformation relates to connection between the Pitton, Wiltshire families and the Whitlocks of New Jersey. Adescendant of the WHITLOCK03 family, Whitlocks of Pitton, recently send in his DNA analysis and it hada very close match with the previous results sent in by a WHITLOCK16, Whitlocks of New Jerseydescendant. We knew that Thomas Whitlock (1623?-1703) who heads the WHITLOCK16 chart was fromWiltshire and these DNA results show that descendants have DNA very similar to those who descend fromthe Pitton families. While this does not prove there is a connection it indicates we are likely on the righttrack!!

All great additions to our collection and my thanks to everyone who submitted information.

Subscriptions for this year are down from previous years but still holding at about 100. I am anticipatingsome hefty costs next year related to the website but I am hoping our reserves are substantial enough tocover those costs. Many subscribers still pay the full subscription while receiving the Newsletter by emailand I appreciate that. I have decided to hold subscriptions at the same level of $15 a year for North Americaand $20 a year for International. Again, half price if your Newsletter is sent by email. The rates for Britain,New Zealand and Australia are based on current exchange rates. A review of costs for 2009 shows ourpostage and printing costs are down substantially but telephone and internet costs are up as I now have topay for an internet connection as we no longer have free dial-in. My thanks to everyone who has supportedthe Whitlock Family Association over the years and I hope you continue to enjoy the Newsletters and willrenew for another year.

For those interested in the revisions to our website I have looked at several other sites and intend to modelthe new revised Whitlock Family Association website after the www.speidelfamilygenealogy.com site thathas won the Guild of One Name Studies’ Best Website award for several years now. Hopefully we canmake our site as user friendly as the Speidel one appears to be. Any comments welcome and appreciated. Ifthere are other sites you like, let me know and I will check them out. Hopefully we can pull together the bestideas from each site and make ours a great one.

Best wishes for the Holiday Season and all the best to each of you for the New Year. In February 2010Vancouver hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics - it is going to be hectic time for a few months!!

JAMES H. WHITLOCK (1829-1901) of QUINCY,PLUMAS CO., CAOver the past 28 years of writing newsletters it has been difficult not to repeat myself or to write aboutpersons who have been the subject of previous articles. In the case of James H. Whitlock I have made anexception because such interesting new information continues to come in about him. In June 1996 I did anarticle about the Whitlock mountains of Arizona and while we knew at that time that the mountains werenamed for James H. Whitlock, we knew very little about him. In September 1998 new details about his lifewere known and I did another article at that time. The following article, send in by Lawrence Otis, adds somuch more detail to the story I decided it was worth a third article.

This article is part of the Plumas Co. Biographies and is from Illustrated History of Plumas, Lassen & SierraCounties written in 1882 by Fariss and Smith

MAJOR JAMES H. WHITLOCK was born May 15, 1829, in Union county, Illinois. Early in 1850 he startedon the long journey across the plains to California. He left his home on the second of April, went to St.Louis, and paid in advance for a passage on a wagon train. Going to Fort Leavenworth by steamer, theystarted overland on the fourth of May. They met with many reverses on the journey, and when they reachedSalt Lake City most of the horses were dead, and the proprietor of the train was a bankrupt individual. Mr.Whitlock and two others accepted one horse as their share, and started on foot to complete the journey, accompanied by one hundred emigrants, most of whom were in the same predicament. They hired aMormon to pilot them into California; but after getting them across the desert, during the passage of whichsome of the emigrants died, he suddenly disappeared. On the twentieth day from Salt Lake City they finallydiscovered the emigrant trail, and after many hardships and privations, arrived at Hangtown (Placerville) onthe twenty-fourth of August, Mr. Whitlock having lost sixty pounds of flesh on the trip. He engaged inmining during the fall and winter on Weaver creek, and make about $2,000. In March, 1851, he came toNelson creek, now in Plumas county, where he sunk all his money in a river claim in six weeks. Then hemined six miles farther up, with better success. He and his two comrades took a contract to furnish lumberfor a flume, and made considerable at it by Christmas. In the spring they all engaged in fluming, and cameout dead-broke in the fall, with numerous debts to pay. They then mined at Fiddler's flat and Henpeck flat,on Nelson creek. In January, 1853, their camp being without the means of subsistence, they left one man totake care of the claims, and the rest, twelve in number, went below for food. They experienced terriblehardships in breaking a trail through the snow, and finally the party got divided, Mr. Whitlock's partyreaching a house on the third day. The others were not so fortunate. When they were rescued WalterGoodspeed was dead; H. Brown lived about two weeks, and William Phillips died six months afterwardfrom the effects of the trip. At the fall election in November, 1854, Mr. Whitlock was elected countysurveyor on the whig ticket, and was re-elected four successive subsequent times. Though elected in the fallof 1861 he did not qualify. He then raised a company of sixty-six men, was elected captain, and they weremustered in as company F., fifth infantry, California volunteers. Mr. Whitlock's commission dated fromOctober 2, 1861. The company left Sacramento, February 2, 1862, established Camp Drum in Los Angelescounty, now Wilmington, and from there went into Arizona. Whitlock was commanding officer at Tucsonuntil April, 1863, when he was ordered to New Mexico, and did active service against the Indians. Forgallant conduct in a battle with the Apaches in March, 1864, when a government train was recaptured fromthem, Mr. Whitlock was brevetted major. In October his company was mustered out, and he took a positionin another regiment; he had charge of Fort Seldon, most of which he built, and afterwards was at FortGarland, in Colorado, with the command of General Kit Carson, where he served the balance of his timeuntil discharged at Santa Fe, December 5, 1866. He returned to Plumas county in April, 1867, having beenabsent five years and a half. In the fall he was engaged in merchandising at Taylorville, but sold in 1868, andin 1870 embarked in the same business at Greenville, which he followed until 1876, when he sold again, went to the centennial, and was married in March, 1877, at Warren, Illinois, to Miss M. H. Baldwin, bywhom he has had one son, Robert Greenleaf, now three years old. He returned to Plumas in April, 1877, andwas elected to the legislature by the republicans, with a very large majority. In the fall of 1878 hecommenced business at Quincy, and was appointed postmaster October 28, 1878.

James H. Whitlock is part of our WHITLOCK23 chart, The Whitlocks of Henrico Co., Virginia. He was theson of William C. Whitlock and his wife Elizabeth. In March 1877 at Warren, Illinois, he married Mary H.Baldwin and they had one son, Robert Greenleaf Whitlock born about 1879. James H. Whitlock died inQuincy July 11,1901. In 1901 Robert Greenleaf Whitlock is shown as a graduate of the California College

MARY WHITLOCK OF PITTON, WILTS b.1808In the September 2009 issue there was an article regarding George Whitlock of Farley, Wilts b.1833. Thelast sentence in the article was “If the 1846 marriage certificate shows Mary [Whitlock] was single and thedaughter of William Whitlock that would confirm this theory” Well, Muriel Allen acquired the marriagecertificate in question and it gave the marriage date of Mary Whitlock and Joshua Parsons as December3,1846 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Salisbury, Wiltshire but Mary’s father turns out to be Robert Whitlock.

I agree with Muriel that this has to be the Robert Whitlock who married Sarah Collins April 7, 1795 atPitton, Wiltshire. While Mary’s baptism shows her parents as Robert and Hannah Whitlock there is no otherreference to Robert and Hannah in this time frame and we have assumed this was an error and Mary’sparents were Robert Whitlock & Sarah Collins. This places Mary on the WHITLOCK52 chart withconnections to the WHITLOCK03 chart. It also confirms Mary was not married previously and her sonGeorge was born prior to Mary’s first marriage. This also makes Mary a descendant of Alexander Whitlockand Katherine Webb who were married at St.Thomas, Salisbury, Wiltshire October 23,1625.

I have made the changes to our files to reflect this connection and updated both the charts affected by thischange. My thanks to both Muriel Allen and Quintin White for their assistance in resolving this mystery.

Hopefully, sometime in the future, we will be able to come across some descendants, likely in Michigan, with which we can share the resolving of this mystery.

WILLIAM WHITLOCK (1761-1836) SHIPOWNEROF NYMy first information about William Whitlock came from Bache McEvers Whitlock in the 1970's. Hisinformation was based on material gathered by his grandmother Emily Ogden (Simmonds) Whitlock.

At the age of about 12 William was apprenticed to Captain Snow and started a long career on the sea. Byage 18 had signed on as a mate and sailed to Philadelphia. His father, William was also a sea captain andthere is an incident recorded relating to William sailing as master of the ship Prince George William IVwhere his father “trounced” him for rubbing out his log slate!!

By 1782 the American Revolution was nearing the end and William is recorded on board Admiral Rodney’sship during an engagement with Count de Grasse.

December 25, 1785 William Whitlock married Sarah Morrell at the 1st & 2nd Presbyterian church, New YorkCity. Sarah was the daughter of Samuel Morrell & Bathsheba Browne. Between 1787 and 1802 they had 8children.

In 1795 he took command of the shipHunter owned by Franklyn Robinson& Co. And consigned to Rathbone &Benson. In March 1796 they left NewYork for Canton with his eight yearold son Samuel Morrell Whitlockaccompanying him. On the voyagehome in March 1798 he was taken bythe Spaniards and carried intoAlgeciras. Quite an adventure for aneight year old!!

William had a long career at sea andhe owned and commanded the firstLiverpool packet Union. TheMerchants of Liverpoolcommemorated this event by hosting apublic dinner in his honour andpresenting him with a punch bowl.

This family is detailed on theWHITLOCK16 chart.

Our thanks to William OgdenWhitlock for the copy of a portrait ofWilliam Whitlock shown here.
