We spent a couple of weeks in October driving to Southern California with our friend Malcolm and my brother Phil and his three kids, ages 8,6 &4. Disneyland was the high point on the trip for the kids and they had a great time. We were a group of 20 at Disneyland as several of Patrick’s school friends flew in from Hawaii and New Jersey with their families as well as the ones who joined us from Berkeley and Santa Cruz. It was a great way to celebrate a bunch of 50 th birthdays. On the way down spent a couple of days in Redding visiting Patrick’s cousin and then some time in Berkeley with our friend Mary so the driving was broken up. Considering there was a total of about 27 hours of driving the kids took it pretty well. While we were Berkeley I got to visit with my distant Whitlock cousin Gary Spencer, wife Mary Alice and their new baby, Kathleen in Alameda. Gary is a descendant of my grandfather’s sister Charlotte Agnes who married Stanhope Frederick Hamilton Cour Barron. Gary had copy of the book John Hamilton of Donegal 1800-1884 This Recklessly Generous Landlord who was Fred Cour Barron’s grandfather. The book is by Dermot James and details how John Hamilton was one of very few Irish Landlords who nearly bankrupted themselves trying to assist their tenants during the famines of the 1830's and 1840's. Included is a portion of a journal kept by his daughter Mary (Moll) Hamilton (who later married Frederick Augustus Cour Barron) during a four year tour of continental Europe. It also includes a photograph of Moll Hamilton age 13 taken in Dresden in 1840, one of first photographs developed on paper, a technique only discovered in 1839. The book is a little dry but interesting. John’s uncle was Charles Wellesley who became the Duke of Wellington and there are some interesting anecdotes about his famous Pakenham relations. One of John’s favourite uncles and guardian was Edward Pakenham who was killed at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. John Hamilton also recounts how he was able to obtain his Master of Arts degree at Cambridge without sitting the exam because he could prove he was a descendant of King Edward I. Now that would be a useful document to find!! Patrick was able to find a copy of this book on eBay and we picked it up on the way home. An interesting addition to our collection of Whitlock related books. There have been other additions to our book collection as well. Bunyip and the Tiger Cats by Judith Whitlock is a children’s story published in 1965. Based on the definite Australian character of the book, I would guess that Judith Whitlock is Judith Lorraine Whitlock the daughter of William Alfred Norman & Marjorie Mary (Glass) Whitlock who where married at Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia in 1933. Judith lives in England, is married to John L. Swinon and they have four children. The location, the time and the married with children all fits an article received from Joanne Kader about Judith. This family is part of the WHITLOCK05 chart, The Whitlocks of Pitton, Wiltshire #8. Another addition is Nelson & Victory by Peter Charles Whitlock, a souvenir booklet available at Portsmouth while touring Victory. Somewhere in the future I figure it might be useful to start a list of books to let people know what is in our collection. Maybe after I finish cataloguing the photograph collection. Other items of interest in this issue are the Goochland, Va wills and certificates from Elwood Morris R2415- R2417 & CERT779-788. Cheryl Dahl’s file on the family of Elizabeth Whitlock the famous “fat lady” of the Barnum and Bailey Circus (X5293) pulls together a huge amount of research on this part of the family and confirms their place on the WHITLOCK09 chart. The middle of December is here already and I am just finishing the Newsletter!! Life continues to be overfull. We spent a couple of weeks in October driving to Southern California with our friend Malcolm and mybrother Phil and his three kids, ages 8,6 &4. Disneyland was the high point on the trip for the kids and theyhad a great time. On the way down spent a couple of days inRedding visiting Patrick’s cousin and then some time in Berkeley with our friend Mary so the driving wasbroken up. Considering there was a total of about 27 hours of driving the kids took it pretty well.

While we were Berkeley I got to visit with my distant Whitlock cousin Gary Spencer, wife Mary Alice andtheir new baby, Kathleen in Alameda. Now that would be a useful documentto find!! Patrick was able to find a copy of this book on eBay and we picked it up on the way home. Aninteresting addition to our collection of Whitlock related books.

There have been other additions to our book collection as well. Bunyip and the Tiger Cats by JudithWhitlock is a children’s story published in 1965. Based on the definite Australian character of the book, Iwould guess that Judith Whitlock is Judith Lorraine Whitlock the daughter of William Alfred Norman &Marjorie Mary (Glass) Whitlock who where married at Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia in 1933. Somewhere in the future I figure it might be useful to start a list of books to letpeople know what is in our collection. Maybe after I finish cataloguing the photograph collection.

Other items of interest in this issue are the Goochland, Va wills and certificates from Elwood Morris R2415-R2417 & CERT779-788. The continued collection of Ontario certificates from Lawrence Otis CERT789-806. Lawrence Otis also took the item to heart about securing your records, that Imentioned in the September issue, by sending me a CD of all his records for safekeeping.

Cheryl Dahl’s file on the family of Elizabeth Whitlock the famous “fat lady” of the Barnum and BaileyCircus (X5293) pulls together a huge amount of research on this part of the family and confirms their placeon the WHITLOCK09 chart. I am hoping to explore with Louie Smith of Louisville, Ky his connection ofthe WHITLOCK23 chart to James and Agness (Christmas) Whitlock shown on the WHITLOCK25 line(X5296). 1780's in North Carolina and I have never seen any reference to this person. Hopefully further NorthCarolina research will explain who this person was. Larry Perkins’ details on the Birmingham photographer,Henry Joseph Whitlock (X5325) provided great new detail on this family and I hope to do an article on thisfamily for a future issue of the Newsletter. This article finally explained to me the connection between theseveral Whitlock photographers in the Birmingham area at this time. I actually have a Whitlock Bros.photograph of some of my mother’s Croydon/Trehearne family of Salwarpe Mill, Worcestershire taken inthe 1890's.

Arthur Whitlock Cole’s additions to the WHITLOCK09 chart (X5328) tie many of these late 1700's andearly 1800's Connecticut families together and fill in many blanks. Arthur also provides us with useful detailon the Whitlock family that founded the Whitlock Jewelry store in Eufaula, Alabama. This is the subject ofanother article in this issue. Christine Unsworth’s details on the Census records of Pitton & Farley 1851-1901 (X5355) will be very useful. Alida Spry’s research (X5356) into the Maryland family of James &Susan (Price) Whitelock (M1836) (X5356) pulls together several of these families. This family likelyconnects to the WHITLOCK57 chart and has been added to the end of that chart as “Also from Maryland”.Interesting to note that the descendants of this part of the Maryland family used the name Whitlock notWhitelock.

Our base of knowledge grows steadily and each year brings more understanding and connections. Mycontinued thanks to all those whose shared their research in the past year. Our website continues to getcomplements and hopefully as we add more and more data it will be even more useful as a research tool.

Subscriptions were down a bit but remain in the 130 range and funds are covering our costs, even with thefairly steep increase in postage costs. Several persons purchased complete sets of Newsletters (1981-2004)this year which resulted in the health balance. I cannot see any reason at this time to raise our rates.Renewal forms are included and copy of our Balance Sheet. I have marked on the renewal forms if you havealready paid for 2005. I do appreciate get the renewal forms back with your subscriptions as the form tellsme if I have already done a Main Line for you. I appreciate most of you converting to personal chequesrather than stamps but I can still accept some subscriptions in stamps if a cheque is not feasible.

I have managed to get some time to work on the Birth Register and have up to 1852 entered and up to 1824is fully catalogued with mother’s names. The entering is portable and I can work on it on planes and sittingin airports but the cross-referencing with the mother’s maiden names requires pulling each of the familycards so is a slow process that I can only do at home.

I have also been compiling Family Source files for some of the families with multiple source referenceslisted on their family cards. This allows me to forward to those interested a listing of every reference wehave in the files to that family. I have done 15 of them so far and will include them on the Website once Ifigure a way to name the files so researchers will know which files are the ones they would be interested in.

Maybe one day I will retire and have time to do all these things!!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for the New Year.

WHITLOCK JEWELRY STORE, EUFAULA,ALABAMA 1860'sThe following email was received from Sonny Harrison:

Hello.... I am responding to your September 18 letter to Whitlock Jewelry Store. My wife and I have ownedthe business since 1976. It is the oldest Jewelry Store in Alabama, being established by Whitlock brothers in1865.

The last Whitlock's in the business was circa 1929 or 1930, I suspect having failed in the Great Depression.I know the business was sold to an investor, E P Clark, who planned to liquidate it, but he was convinced byW.V. Neville, who was also his brother in law to allow him to continue to operate it as a partnership, later, approx 1940, Neville bought out Clark and we purchased from Neville. While I have never completelyresearched the Whitlock's, and they have no survivors in Eufaula since the 40's to pass along information, thefollowing is what I do know.

There were two Whitlock Brothers from Vermont {this has been confirmed with Whitlock's in Vermont whocontinue in the Jewelry Business, I think Burlington} who migrated South in the early 1860's. It is believedthey were sympathetic to the South, they operated a Jewelry Store in Perry, Georgia until 1863 when theyjoined the Confederate Army. Perry is about 110 miles or so East of Eufaula, only a few miles South ofMacon, Georgia. One of the primary rail lines in the deep South at that time ran from Macon toMontgomery, Alabama thru Eufaula.

Eufaula also was a riverboat landing for Cotton shipments. There was very little else in Eufaula at that time, and the town as we know it today was not even laid out or surveyed until after the War by a YankeeCarpetbagger named Seth Lore around 1870. At any rate when the War ended, the Whitlock Brothers settledin Eufaula, not returning to Perry. It is my understanding one brother was Johnny B Whitlock and was anOptomertist and the business was run as a Jewelry, Watch Repair, and Optometry. Quite successful and theWhitlocks were outstanding community leaders, helping found one of the Banks and Country Club, andactive in Literary and other community affairs..........You cannot miss their names in anything in theCommunity from 1900 to 1930. I do not know if this is of much help to you, good luck with yourresearch...... R A (Sonny) Harrison

-------

This letter follows an item in the September issue of the Whitlock Family Newsletter where I reported that Ihad recently discovered which John Henry Whitlock it was who founded the Jewelry business in Eufaula.Sonny Harrison’s letter confirms I was on the right track.

John Henry Whitlock was born May 17,1837 in Crown Point, New York and died in Eufaula, Alabama May3, 1900. In 1850 John, age 14 is shown living with Lafayette Preston of Castleton, Vermont. Mr. Prestonwas a goldsmith/jewelry in the Castleton/Hubbardton area from the 1850's through the 1880's. It is assumedit is during this time that John learned his trade. By 1860 he is living in Houston, Georgia and is shown asage 23, Jeweler.

He married Clara M. Griffith February 16,1866 in Barbour Co., Alabama and the John Benjamin Whitlockthat Sonny mentions as a brother was actually John Henry & Clara Whitlock’s son born 1867.

The brother that appears to have gone to Alabama with John Henry Whitlock was the youngest son, GeorgeWilliam Whitlock born in Hydeville, Rutland Co., Vermont October 12,1854 and died in Alabama, likely inEufaula. John’s mother Mary (Sanford) Whitlock also appears to have joined her sons in Albama as shedied in Eufaula March 3,1894. Their father John Gilbert Whitlock (1811-1869) died in Rutland Co.,Vermont. This family is detailed on the WHITLOCK09 chart, The Whitlocks of Connecticut.

Our thanks to Sonny Harrison for the above information and to Arthur W. Cole for additional details.

A WHOLESALE POISONER

She is Supposed to Have Caused the Death of Four Persons

Detroit, Mich., Aug. 18 - The Journal prints a Hamburg, Mich., special to-day alleging that Mrs. JulianBUTLER, 45 years of age, who resided near that village, is supposed to have poisoned her father, mother, husband and herself, all of whom are dead. Harry WHITLOCK, the hired man, who is dying, and Dr.Elias

SMITH, of Whitemore lake, the family physician. Dr. SMITH is broken in health and attributed his illness topartaking of food at the woman's home. Mrs. BUTLER's father was a steady farmer. Although he had hearttrouble, he died from cramps, after several months' sickness, during which time his hands and feet becamenumb and useless. The mother's death was attributed to cramps and was unexpected. Two and a half yearsago the woman's husband, Charles BUTLER, was taken ill and during the visits of the physician he wasinvited to dine. Dr. SMITH says he was invariably ill after the meals, but suspected nothing more than theeffects of a congestion of food.

About July 1st Harry WHITLOCK, who had taken the farm on shares, boarding at Mrs. BUTLER's home, was taken ill. Dr. SMITH treated him, ascribing his illness to milk poison. The physician tasted the foodprepared by Mrs. BUTLER and was taken violently ill, the symptoms being a burning at the stomach andvomiting. Dr. SMITH carried with him some of the food prepared, telling the woman she was suspected ofhaving poisoned the man. The food was sent to Ann Arbor where a chemical analysis showed the presenceof strychnine and arsenic.

Meantime Mrs. BUTLER attempted suicide by taking laudanum and failing in her purpose another poisonwas brought into play which concluded the job. Just before her demise the woman practically admitted herguilt to Dr. SMITH.

WHITLOCK is living but his hands and feet are useless and his health is broken. The woman was a neighborof ex-Governor WINANS who died of heart failure some weeks ago. It was charged that Mrs. BUTLER hadsent him food and that his death was directly attributed to her. Dr. SMITH denies this, however.

----------

Our records show Harry Whitlock age 11 on the 1880 census living in Hamburg, Livingston Co., Michiganwith his mother Carrie born in New Jersey about 1850. Also two siblings, Wirt age 10 and Cora age 8. Allthe children are born in Michigan and their father was also born in Michigan. In 1850 also living inHamburg, Livingston Co., Michigan is Aramus Whitlock age 42 born in Vermont. He is married to Carolineage 39 also born in Vermont. There are four children shown in 1850, Frances 15 born Vermont and Jenett13, Emery 11 and Franklin 8 all born in Michigan. I would therefore suspect that Harry’s father was eitherEmery or Franklin.

Harry Whitlock appears to have survived as he shows on the 1900 US census still living in Hamburg. Hewas born August 1868 and is married to Mildred born September 1875. Living with them is LayfayettThrasher born Dec.1825 in New York shown as a “Bo” (Boarder?)

HENRY B. WHITLOCK (1799-1871) OF GREENECO., ILThe following was received from Mitzi Calbreath in March 2000:

All articles from The White Hall Register

May 20, 1871 - - An aged citizen killed with a hoe -- late this week news reached us from Rockbridge that onThursday, Henry Whitlock, an old man, lona resident of Greene County was murdered with a hoe by GeorgeFreer, son of Elias Freer, in a blacksmith shop near the W.P. Witt place. The difficulty was some trivialmatter about a gap in the fence and words coming up led to blows. Is seems Whitlock fled into the shop andFreer, who struck the fatal blow, causing instant death.

June 3, 1871 - Whitlock case - On Friday of last week, Sheriff Bell and deputy Williams arrived home fromsKirksville, Missouri where they had gone in search of Moses Freer, Jr. implicated in the Whitlock murder.Freer married one of Lewis W. Link's daughters and Lewis Link is a justice of the peace at Kirksville. Thenews of the killing had reached there but Freer had not been seen.

June 10, 1871 - Last Saturday one Freer brother, of George Freer in jail was brought before Esq. Cocke andRainey on charges of attempt to bribe the jailor of Greene County, to allow the escape of the prisoner.George is the man that killed old Mr. Whitlock, On examination which was postponed and a hearing he washeld in $500. to answer.

July 29, 1871 - Alex Whitlock and J.W. Whitlock offer reward of $300 for delivery of Morris Freer.

Jan 27, 1872 - Henry Whitlock, age 72 years, resident of Greene County for 40-50 years was killed on SWcorner of the W.P. Witts farm 4 miles west of Rockbridge, 12 miles east of Carrollton on May 18, 1871...Moses Freer lived on Abram Freer's place about two miles east of the scene of murder. George Freer lived afew rods SW of the scene and Elias Freer, the father lived a mile west of the scene. Abram Freer had residedin Texas, 2 to 3 years and came back the day before the murder and stopped at his place where Moses Freerlived and George had gone over and the three had been to Rockbridge where there was whiskey and theboys were "taking a spree over Abe's getting back"

Where was bad feelins of Moses and George toward the deceased and witness Brown had heard George sayon a former occasion, he meant to kill old Henry Whitlock.

Seems as tho they met as deceased, Henry Whitlock, came up the road from the south with his hoe where hehad been covering corn at Andy Whitlock's. George had a plank in his hand and said "D_ _ n you, I'm goingfor you and drew his plank, the old man raised his hoe to ward off the blow. George pitched the plankendwise and hit the old man in the breast and caught the hoe and wrenched it from the old man's hands, whothen retreated toward the house of Smith's, who lived in a house on land tended by Mr. Whitlock, followedby George and Moses and on the doorstep George struck the first blow in the back of the neck, Mosesstanding close by as the old man entered the door, he received another blow in the neck with the hoe.

Smith and Mrs. Smith and the deceased got into the house and bolted the door, The door was broken downby the Freers from outside and George struck the old man again on the collar bone with the hoe, Moseshollering "Kill him" At this stroke, the old man fell, never speaking again. Large drops of sweat burst out onhis face, his eyes glazed over, his jaw fell and with a few gasps he died on the floor half sitting against theopen door.

July 15, 1876 - George Freer, who was tried and convicted of murder in killing of old Henry Whitlock ofGreene County and sentenced to Joliet for 14 years in 1872, was this week pardoned out by GovernorBeveridge and reached home Thursday. This is one of the many moves in the master stroke of policyadopted by governors and presidents this year. George's vote will swell the mighty column for Hayes andWheeler this fall. He is loyal to the core!

Henry B. Whitlock was born in Virginia Jul.29,1799 and died in Rockbridge, Greene Co. Illinois May18,1871. He was the son of John Normont & Abigail (Preston) Whitlock. Henry B. married Hannah Smith(1801-1876) in Madison (later Greene) Co., Illinois Apr.25,1820. Henry B. & Hannah had 15 childrenbetween 1821 and 1844. Henry B shows on every census from 1820 to 1860 and appears to have lived in thesame County his whole life. He purchased 38.89 acres in Rockbridge Township Dec.2,1839. It is describedas W1/2SE & NENW & SWNW of Section 6 township 9NR10W. It is assumed that a parcel of this landbecame the Whitlock Cemetery following Henry B. Whitlock’s murder in 1871. The cemetery still existsand is the subject of another article in this issue of the Newsletter.

WHITLOCK CEMETERY, GREENE CO., ILOn Thursday, May 18,1871 Henry B. Whitlock, age 71 was murdered in Greene Co., Illinois. The cemeteryin which he was buried was located on the family farm and after the farm passed into other hands the familycontinued to look after the cemetery and kept it up. D. Marshall of San Francisco recently sent me extractsfrom a letter received from cousins in Macoupin Co., Illinois.

“The cemetery is Whitlock Cemetery and it was on the Henry B. Whitlock farm. Henry B. Whitlock wasmurdered in the 1870's and the family kept it up.

The deed was passed down to the relative care takers and Mr. Shade--who's grandfather is buried there wasthe care taker until about seven years ago when his foot that was injured in World War II gave him so muchtrouble that he couldn't work on the cemetery anymore and he couldn't find anyone to take care of it. So itgrew up with trees and weeds.

Dana and I went to see him about family history and to see if the owners of the property would let us startcleaning it up. Well, we talked for awhile and he said we were the only people living around here thatexpressed any interest in the cemetery and he said here is the deed. You take it and take care of the cemetery.

We sent you the picture of the cemetery that we took in January of this year with just one tombstone stickingout of the trees and brush.

Well we are about half done clearing trees as big as 10-15 feet tall from in between the graves and clearingout the honeysuckle vines. More to go!!

I estimate it will take about another year to get it in decent shape.”

Henry B. Whitlock is shown on our WHITLOCK35 chart and is the subject of another article in this issue ofthe Newsletter. The cousins referred to in the above article are Rick & Dana Davis ([email protected]) of Carlinville, Illinois.

POLLY (WHITLOCK) EDWARDS - WILSON CO.TNThomas E. Partlow's Wilson County, Tennessee, Chancery Court Records 1842-1892, shows the followingentry:

Bill of complaint of Polly Edwards against Erastus L. Smith, administrator of Thomas Whitlock, and WarrenEdwards, the husband of the said Polly Edwards. The Edwards are citizens of Gibson County, Tennessee.Said Smith is a resident of Wilson County. Thomas Whitlock, father of Polly Edwards, died some years ago.The said Polly is seeking to prevent her share of the estate from going to the creditors of her husband. 26June 1853 (Chancery Court 1850-1854, Pp. 426-428)

----------

Our records show that Polly Whitlock married Warren Edwards in Wilson Co., Tennessee November13,1821. The above chancery record shows us that her father was Thomas Whitlock. The only ThomasWhitlock who “died some years ago” in Wilson Co. was Thomas Whitlock (1757-1848) who was married toSusannah Webb. I would estimate Polly was born about 1802 which would place her in the WHITLOCK33family between Nancy Whitlock b.1800 who married James Godphrey and Susan Whitlock b.1805 whomarried Warren Davenport.

Our thanks to Chuck Rockett for this item. Always interesting after all these years to find a missing familylink. If anyone has information on the Edwards family of Gibson Co., Tn, I would be interested to add thenames of Polly and Warren’s children to the WHITLOCK33 chart.
