Quotes for Reflection

It must at the same time be noticed, that we cannot enjoy the favor of God, even when he kindly offers to be reconciled to us, except we from the heart repent. —John Calvin No unforeseen accident can arise to put any stop in the way of executing the decrees of God. — John Gill

GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO WORSHIP

It is God Himself who calls His people to worship. We do not call ourselves, but it is the King who opens His gates and beckons us into His courts.

Gospel Invitation—1 Peter 2:25

For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Introit—Come, O Creator Spirit Blest, Vs. 1

Call to Worship—Psalm 122

Pastor: I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!” All: Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem! Reader 1: Jerusalem—built as a city that is bound firmly together, to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. All: There thrones for judgment were set, the thrones of the house of David. Reader 2: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they be secure who love you! Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!” All: For my brothers and companions’ sake I will say, “Peace be within you!” Pastor: For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good.

O Splendor Of God's Glory Bright

GOD SPEAKS TO HIS PEOPLE THROUGH HIS WORD The Bible is the means by which God graciously reveals Himself to His people—so we listen, read, and study with expectant hearts. God particularly entreats us in His Word to sing psalms. And while all Scripture is appropriate for hymns and spiritual songs, there is a specific exhortation for us to make use of the Psalter as the church’s songbook.

Psalm of Praise—With Joy And Gladness In My Soul (Psalm 122)

Text: The Psalter, 1912, Alt. Henry C. Haffner, 2016; Music: LOUISIANA, William Walker, The Southern Harmony, 1835, Arr. Henry C. Haffner, 2016.

Scripture Reading—Hosea 6:1-11

“Come, let us return to the Lord; for He has torn us, that He may heal us; He has struck us down, and He will bind us up. After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live before Him. Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; His going out is sure as the dawn; He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the Earth.” What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth, and My judgment goes forth as the light. For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with Me. Gilead is a city of evildoers, tracked with blood. As robbers lie in wait for a man, so the priests band together; they murder on the way to Shechem; they commit villainy. In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing; Ephraim’s whoredom is there; Israel is defiled. For you also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore the fortunes of My people.

Elder: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Hymn of Praise—Rise And Bless The Lord Your God

Text: based on Nehemiah 9:1-8, Nathan George, 2014; Music: Nathan George, 2014.

The Reading of the Word—Zechariah 1:1-6

In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the Word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, son of Iddo, saying, 2 “The Lord was very angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to Me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. 4 Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But they did not hear or pay attention to Me, declares the Lord. 5 Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6 But My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, ‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for our ways and deeds, so has He dealt with us.’”

GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO CONFESSION, REPENTANCE, AND RECONCILIATION

The People of God respond to His Word by confessing their sins, repenting of their sinful ways, and seeking God’s favor through the reconciling work of Jesus, the Son of God.

Confession of Sin—from John 20:24-29; Mark 9:24; Isaiah 1:4

Pastor: Lord, we confess that like the chief priests (and even some of Christ’s disciples), whatever faith we may have, is bedeviled by doubt. Thus, when the other disciples told Thomas, “We have seen the Lord,” He said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side, I will never believe.”

All: So we cry, “Lord, we believe. Help us in our unbelief.” Pastor: Lord, we confess that we are a sinful people, laden with iniquity. All: We are sinners and the offspring of sinners. We are doubters, as foolish as children.

Assurance of Pardon— Philippians 1:6, 9-11; John 3:16-17

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Pastor: This is the promise of God. This is the Word of the Lord. All: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes

in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Pastor: For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order

that the world might be saved through Him. All: Thanks be to God.

HEAVENLY GIFT—EUCHARISTO As God beckons His people to the bounty of His table, they make joyous profession of their fealty to Him.

Profession of Faith—The Apostles’ Creed

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth,

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit; the one holy church—both visible and invisible; The communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sursum Corda Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Pastor: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father

Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Therefore, we praise You, Triune God, and we join our voices with the angels, the archangels, and the whole company of Heaven in this hymn of eternal praise:

WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND THE LORD’S TABLE

Having confessed our sins and made a good profession of faith, God's Table is open to all those “faithfully-fenced" members of the covenant community. Please come forward to partake of this means of grace. You may take the bread and dip it either in the cup of wine or grape juice.

GOD’S PEOPLE RESPOND IN GRATEFUL PRAISE, PETITIONS, TITHES & OFFERINGS Our praying, serving, and giving are essential aspects of worship. It is here that our faith moves from our heads and hearts into our lives and callings.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession—The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Hymn of Praise—Praise To The Lord, The Almighty

GOD SENDS HIS PEOPLE OUT

After calling His people into His presence, forgiving their sins, instructing them in His Word, and providing a foretaste of the marriage supper of the Lamb, God sends His people into the world to show His light in the darkness.

Benediction—Numbers 6:24–26

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

Worship Notes:

[The decrees of God] are immutable and unalterable; they are the mountains of brass, out of which come forth the horses and chariots, the executioners of divine providence; signified by mountains, for their immoveableness, and by mountains of brass, for their greater stability and firmness (Zech. 6:1-8). The decrees of the Medes and Persians, when signed and sealed, were not to be changed or altered: but these are more unchangeable and unalterable than they were: we read of the immutability of the counsel of God, (Heb. 6:17) His purposes and decrees, which, like Himself, are the same today, yesterday, and for ever; without any variableness, or shadow of turning.

—John Gill, A Body of Doctrinal Divinity
