requested a walk-through of the bar. Officers responded, but did not make contact with any individuals.

0126 – Dispatch received a tip that there may be a party at the Flat Lake boat access. Re-sponding deputy reported that the party looked like it had ended earlier. There were a few camp-ers there.

0953 – Caller reported a ve-hicle that had been parked at the marina for over a week. She said it hasn’t moved and no one has been around it. She provided the plate number to dispatch, who determined that the vehicle hasn’t been reported stolen. A deputy advised the caller that he spoke to the owner who plans on having it towed the same day.

1010 – Caller from 1123 on 5-19 reported that her ex-husband messaged her to let her know he is out of the hospital and staying with a friend in Billings. She advised that she was going to tell him that she has a temporary restraining order out on him and to not have contact with her, then she is going to block him on Facebook.

Monday, May 21, 20181734 – A man in St. Marie

reported that his boss asked him to ask another man, a St. Marie firefighter, to move his truck off of somebody’s property. The firefighter threatened the report-ing party with a gun and this is the second time it has happened. The incident happened less than 10 minutes ago. After talking to all parties involved and receiv-

ing a written statement from the reporting party, a warning was issued to the firefighter.

2033 – A caller reported that a chihuahua was hit by a car and requested an officer to take care of it. A second caller reported that his grandparents hit a dog near John Deere. The dog’s owner was found.

2220 – Caller reported that it sounds like someone is trying to break into her residence. Her dogs are freaking out. Dispatch kept the caller on the phone until law enforcement arrived on the scene. Officers searched the area, but were unable to find a suspect.

Tuesday, May 22, 20180551 – Caller reported that a

truck passed him and he thought the truck had shot at him until he realized that his windshield had been struck by a rock. He was by the overpass construction area in Nashua. MDOT notified to watch for loose gravel from trucks hauling for the construc-tion projects.

1231 – Caller reported pieces of truck tire that are all over the road. People are slowing down and having to swerve to avoid them. Message was left with DOT.

back. Caller called back to let dispatch know he was leaving the residence. They broke his T.V. and tore his shirt. Caller provided the names of both parties and the address of the man. Caller met with officers but did not want to press charges. Officers logged a BAC of .091 for the ex-girlfriend and an arrest was made for viola-tion of conditions.

2211 – Caller requested a walk-through, then asked for an officer to look at an ID. Officer responded and reported that the caller was just concerned about the person’s age.

Wednesday, May 23, 20180826 – Caller said she had a

Sirius XM docking station on her desk since yesterday morning. She said she has heard third- and fourth-hand that a transient left it in a shopping cart but she isn’t sure if that is accurate or not. She would like an officer to stop by just in case the item is stolen.

1100 – Caller advised that they are going to be bringing a wide load through town and requested officers to assist them at an intersection going onto the highway. Assistance provided.

1144 – Caller reported that a client told her that she saw a small plane west of Nemont Manor “but way west” with smoke coming out of its tail. It was determined that the smoke was a formation to honor a de-ceased pilot at his funeral.

1322 – A Bia vehicle was reported stolen from the plant sta-tion south east of Frazer. Caller said it was taken sometime last night. The vehicle is a 1973 GMC flatbed with storage racks on each side of the box. Deputy advised that it is a tribal issue.

in Nashua. 1917 – Caller reported the

back window in his Dodge pick-up is busted out. He doesn’t know when it happened. He just got home and noticed it.

2150 – A construction com-pany accidentally set off a fire alarm at a local business.

Thursday, May 24, 20180737 – Male caller said the

train has been blocking the cross-ing in Nashua and there are vehicles lined up needing to get by. He said he had been there for about 45 minutes or less. Caller refused to give his name. Dispatch advised him that they would notify BN of the com-plaint, but they weren’t able to do much more than that. Caller said, “that figures,” and ended the call. BN notified.

0815 – Caller asked if a Wash-ington driver’s license had been turned in. Caller was advised that dispatch didn’t have anything. Caller explained that they are in the process of getting a Montana driver’s license for someone, but somewhere along the way they lost his Washington license and requested a call if it is turned in.

1231 – Caller in St. Marie reported a van in the driveway of an unoccupied unit. It is filled to capacity with garbage to the point it is sticking out of the windows. He said there used to be a car there, but the car is gone now. The people who were do-ing it have since moved out. He

doesn’t know their names but said they used to live across the street. He described the wife as heavy-set and the husband as a sex-offender. He said that since the van is in the driveway of an unoccupied unit, he can’t get it moved. He was told by a neigh-bor that the abandoned unit is where all the feral cats live and he is sure the garbage has attracted mice. He spoke to the people at the Condo Association and they said it isn’t their problem, it’s the problem of the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. The caller does not live at the unit yet but plans to be there either in July or August and he is concerned that if the problem isn’t taken care of by the time he gets back, it’s going to be an even bigger issue than it is now. Attempts to reach multiple people were unsuccessful.

1408 – Caller reported a pup-py or a small dog running around the construction area just outside of Nashua. She said she is try-ing to get it off the road, but it won’t come to her. There are several other people out there trying to get it as well. They are worried the dog is going to get hit. Deputy notified and he will head that way. Original caller called back and said there is an older lady in the pickup who is trying to get the dog as well. She let her little dog out to see if the loose dog will come to her dog. The loose dog went up the gravel road to the right of the log cabin just north of Highway 2 across from the Wagon Wheel. A woman managed to catch the dog and will take it home and put it on

Facebook. The dog is older and blind in one eye.

1452 – An arrest was made for violation of conditions.

1754 – Caller said they re-ceived a complaint about a little white vehicle with 4-county plates that is headed west by Oswego. The vehicle almost ran their complainant off the road and flipped off the complainant as it went by. The vehicle is believed to be doing about 100 mph, and their complainant will sign a complaint. When contacted, the driver denied doing anything, but was issued a warning.

Friday, May 25, 20180831 – Female caller reported

a man is going on to his neigh-bor’s property and cutting down live trees. The property where the trees are being cut is vacant. It was determined that the man had permission to be on the property and cut the trees.

0841 – A woman reported a green SUV parked across from the church dumpsters that had a blond person sleeping or passed out in the driver seat. She said she went over to check to see if the person was okay and they raised their head but seemed pretty groggy or out of it. The caller said the person was an older female with glasses. She wasn’t sure if she should notify someone but then thought the person might need help so she thought someone should check on her. An officer was unable to make contact, but will keep an eye on the vehicle.

1148 – Caller was worried about a girl that has only had

her driver’s license for about a month-and-a-half but has five people in the vehicle. He said she is headed down Highway 2 towards McDonald's. When the caller was asked if the girl was driving erratically, he said no, she is just not a very good driver. An officer was notified.

1248 – A man dropped off a Visa bank card that he found outside of Shopko at the police department. The card owner was notified.

1312 – A woman arrived in dispatch to report that her car was backed into when she was in the Dairy Queen drive thru. She said that it happened at 1225. The man was driving a Dodge 3500 with a camper in the back. An officer met with the woman.

1431 – Caller reported a ve-hicle at the gravel pit behind the bowling alley. The subject in the vehicle got out and got in with someone in a burgundy SUV and they drove off. The caller doesn’t believe they are doing anything, but he was told to call in if some-one was up there. A deputy was notified who said there didn’t appear to be anything suspicious with the vehicle. He stopped at the property owner’s residence to speak with them.

1733 – Caller in Fort Peck has an owl sitting in a tree in his front yard. The owl appears to have a bad wing. Dispatch connected him with Fish and Game.

1742 – Caller was dog-sitting her parent’s dog and it took off from her about 15-20 minutes ago. The dog is an older deaf male chocolate lab, possibly

intact. It is unknown if the dog is wearing a collar.

1829 – Caller reported that he doesn’t have any power. He tried to call the emergency number but there was no answer. Dispatch also tried to call the number and wasn’t able to get an answer. Northwestern Energy and another contact person was notified. Call-er advised and also reminded to call the non-emergency number when it isn’t an emergency.

1859 – A woman received a bill in the mail that may be a scam. It came from the City of Fullerton in Tustin, Calif. It stated that it was for a parking violation in 2016 and they have a photo of her. An officer will call her back.

2231 – A male caller reported a skunk in his front yard and wanted to know if he can shoot it. Advised him that an officer will call him back.

2334 – Caller reported hearing a loud bang like someone threw something at her door.

Saturday, May 26, 20180046 – Male reported the

4-foot tall light pole that lights the flags has been knocked down. He just got home and heard a noise. When he looked out he could see the light shining through the trees. He said that the high school kids are camping out at the church this weekend. The caller said it was shorting out when he got there so he turned the switch off. He said the bricks surrounding the light pole are disturbed and there might be tire tracks leading to it.

0159 – A vehicle was not

slowing down and was going southbound on Center Communi-ty Road, then eastbound on Heik-ens Road. The deputy reported losing the track at Whatley Road and said it was likely the vehicle double-backed on Heikins Road. The deputy turned off his top lights in a better attempt to look and the vehicle went by fast. It looked like an H2 Hummer. They spun donuts at Whatley and Cen-ter Community Road and spun up a dirt pile to get away. The deputy saw a vehicle pull into a place and stopped to talk to them. The driver denied being the vehicle but did say he saw a vehicle pass him across 117 eastbound toward south river area. The deputy will patrol that area.

0809 – Caller reported re-ceiving a text that violated a no-contact order.

1129 – A brown horse was re-ported running down the highway and was last seen on Cemetery Hill. An officer was headed that way. A man called in and said it was his horse. He was given the location where they had the horse tied up.

1302 – Caller reported his neighbor is cursing at her kids. He doesn’t know her name but said she has black hair. An officer responded to the location and spoke to the female who said she didn’t use any profanity. She was just yelling at the kids to get out of the street.

1305 – Caller reported a grass fire. Cancelled all units that were responding because the hom-

Out and About in St. MarieFRANk AND LIN VARGO III

COuRIER CORRESPONDENTS

Today is the 74th anniversary of D-Day, which was the largest invasion ever assembled, before or since. It landed 156,000 Al-lied troops by sea and air on five beachheads in Normandy, France during WWII.

It was iffy for awhile if Saint Marie was going to have a postal service. Last Wednesday, May 30, I spoke to Thelma Whitman, who told me that her last day was May 31, and she will be closing the doors to the St. Marie post office. I went into the main Post Office in Glasgow and asked what would happen now. Would we be able to receive our mail? Do they have anyone to take Thelma and Nancy’s place? I was told at the time, they didn’t know, as no one has told the Glasgow branch a thing.

On June 1, I called the main branch and spoke to the Post-master Michele Olson. She stated that it was not her decision but the district office in Denver had made the decision to have some-one in our post office by Monday, June 4. Since I am writing this on the Friday before the Courier comes out on Wednesday, it is anyone’s guess at who will fill that slot. By our next article we should know who the contract will go to.

Greg Eldridge stopped by June 2, and has been looking for his nine-year-old cat, a small gray with white cat by the name of Lucky. Greg has put up a post on the Town Hall corkboard too. She is skittish so if you see her, please call Greg, his number is in the phone book. Greg, we hope you find her soon and we will be watching for her, too.

Several residents have been having trouble with dogs running loose and are asking owners to be responsible. Keep your pups on a leash or chain in the yard. If your pup bites someone, you are liable.

Also, several vehicles speed through Saint Marie without any regard to children that might be playing. Please slow down, the kids are out now and even though they need to learn to watch for cars, too, there are speed limits here in Saint Marie. If you see a car speeding down the street, take down the license number and description, fill out a com-plaint at Town Hall or call the Sheriff’s Office.

To all the gardeners out there that are having problems with the weed eater guy cutting down your precious flowers, go to the office and fill out a complaint pa-per. If you don’t want this person using the weed eater in your yard, write out a note stating that for the board members and they will give it to the person who has been

contracted to do the mowing and edging. We have had to do this ourselves along with our family at their place after plants have been annihilated.

We met a new neighbor down on Country Club, she was mov-ing in and her family was help-ing her. We met her mom, Barb White, who lives in Fort Peck. She stated that when the base was in full swing, she had worked here and told us of how nice the base was back then. Barb and her family were very nice people and just want to welcome her daughter and family to the neighborhood.

Episcopal Worship Service will be held on Sunday, June 10, at 10 a.m., at 2 Lakeview Drive, St. Marie. If you have any ques-tions please call Alice Hawkins at 524-3397.

Saint Marie Fire Department training was held June 3, and the second date is up in the air for now. The date that it would usually be on is also Father’s Day, June 17. If you would like to join our Saint Marie Fire De-partment or have any questions please call St. Marie Fire Chief August Aho at 263-9733 and we have a new Assistant Fire Chief, Nick DeGreek.

We want to say a special “Happy Birthday” to our grand-son Michael Pederson who lives here in Saint Marie and will be six years old. Hope your special day is wonderful.

The elusive Patrick Kelly was spotted in town the other day. He was the original developer who

named Saint Marie and tried to make a go of it here. In Febru-ary 2018, he was found liable for fraud and breach of contract in Valley County District Court. Soon after, he was gone from the area.

For those who might not have known the history of our area here in Saint Marie, we do have a very long history here. The Glasgow Air Force Base was the former Glasgow Army Air Field. It was situated on 2,798 acres and prior to the Department of Defense ownership, there was 605 acres of land that was used as a municipal airport and the rest was agricultural land.

Glasgow Army Air Field, also known as the Glasgow Satellite Airfield, was activated in No-vember of 1942, and was a satel-lite field for Great Falls Army Air Base. By 1946, the government classified the airfield surplus and transferred to the War Assets Administration.

The building of the Air Force Base began in 1955 and Glasgow Air Force Base was activated in 1957 as a base for Air Defense Command interceptors.

The original runway at Glas-gow Air Force Base was a single runway of 8,900 feet, which was extended 13,500 feet in length to support the coming of the Boe-ing B-52 bombers and Boeing KC-135 tankers when Glasgow AFB became a Strategic Air Command base in 1960.

This information has come from several sources including Strategic Air Command.com.

The Nashua Lucky Clover 4-H Club recently became a part of the “Adopt a Highway Litter Control” project, where they will pick up trash in Nashua to the Milk River Bridge.

CADEN LAuMEyER, CLuB REPORTER

FOR THE COuRIER

The eighth business meeting of the Lucky Clo-ver 4-H Club was held on May 6. Our roll call ques-tion was “What’s your fa-vorite summer activity?” We sang “If you’re a leader and you know it!”

Our big community ser-vice project we are looking forward to is the “Adopt a Highway” project. We will pick up trash in the town of Nashua to the Milk River Bridge.

District 4-H camp is going on outside of Frazer from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon, June 5 to June 7. Ellie Laumeyer gave a demostration on how to make paper tulips and Taylor Laumeyer gave a presentation on the Adopt a Highway regulations and safety video.

The next meeting will be held on Sunday, June 10, at the Senior Citizens Center, at 4 p.m., in Nashua.
