Who is Carmen V. McMillan Carmen V. McMillan, the seventeen-year-old daughter of Tennessee-based Southeast Financial employee, Jack McMillan and Ana Basoa- McMillian, passed away unexpectedly in July of 2019. Carmen was strong in her faith and truly loved people. If she could help someone less fortunate, she would do so. It didn’t matter who you were, where you came from, or if you shared her faith. She loved you just the same. Carmen was a committed student and academically was at the top of her class. She served on both the swim and tennis teams, was an active member of HOSA, the Collegiate Academy, and the Best Buddies program for mentally challenged youth. After graduation she planned to attend Biola University to pursue a degree in Intercultural Studies. Her goal was to become a missionary and develop cutting-edge agricultural technology to help feed the hungry in both body and soul. Southeast Financial Credit Union is proud to present this scholarship to a student who shares in Carmen’s goal of academic excellence and her dedication to making the world a better place. The Program Southeast Financial Credit Union established the Carmen V. McMillan Memorial Scholarship program to encourage and assist young people seeking a B.A. in Intercultural Studies at Biola University with a focus on Missiology. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, gender, disability or national origin. Eligibility The following criteria must be met to be eligible for the scholarship award: Southeast Financial Credit Union Board of Directors, Scholarship Committee members, employees and dependents are not eligible to participate. Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enroll or a student currently enrolled in the Intercultural Studies program with a focus on Missiology at Biola University. Applicant must have earned a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grade scale. Completed application must be submitted or postmarked by May 31, 2020. All applications should be neatly prepared and legible. Applicant must submit an essay consisting of a minimum 500 words addressing the following topic: Why do you want to be a missionary? Applicant must submit a minimum of one letter of reference. Applicant must submit an official transcript of grades. Selection Process The Southeast Financial Scholarship Committee will consider the following criteria to select the scholarship recipients: Applicant Essay (content, clarity, punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc.) Grade Point Average Community Involvement (must complete at least 100 hours of community service) Letters of Reference Once the selection process has been completed, all applicants will be notified of the results. If selected, winners will be required to provide a final transcript verifying the completion of their high school requirements. Scholarship Award Southeast Financial will award one $5,000 scholarship at fall semester/term enrollment. Award checks will be made payable directly to the educational institution. All information submitted will be held confidential, and applicants will remain unknown to the Scholarship Committee. All decisions are final. Entries are the property of Southeast Financial Credit Union and cannot be returned. By entering, each winner consents to promotional use of his/her name and likeness without additional compensation.
