Who really owns the ethics agenda in modern technology?
Mark Adams – Wright
Director
Technology ethics are principles that can be used to govern technology including factors like risk
management and individual rights. They are basically used to understand and resolve moral issues that
have to do with the development and application of technology of different types.

Ethics – What is the Debate?
Or is it about whether the means to
achieve those things is appropriate?
Is the debate about whether things can
be done?

It is an increasingly big diverse and challenging landscape to
navigate and interpreting the ethical, moral and trust issues is almost
too big for an individual to handle....so what can we do?

The digital new world order
The societal shift from customer
satisfaction to customer
experience is nothing new.....but
the realities of the ethical
questions posed by the actions
required to deliver personalised
value to create the right individual
experience is a different question

Design for who again?
Customer or user
centered design we
get....... but who
considers the ethics
of this?
Do all our user journeys lead to
ethical destinations? Was my 'experience' really
delivered considering the
ethical implications to me ?

Is it all too much to grasp?
The explosion of user friendly simple
to use technologies has never been
greater but are the ethical and
moral considerations across all
those new 'things' too much to
understand and grapple with at a
personal or societal level?

Ethics – Is it all about data?
Precious Information
Internet data flows Multiple drawsAll routes lead to our data dna, our
data crown jewels but are we all
skilled enough to guard them?

Data blindness
"Lack of perception, awareness, or judgement;
ignorance."
Does the individual know what's happening to their
data once it is sent (accept cookies vs GDPR)?
Are organisations so overwhelmed with the data they
have or can access that do they know how to process
and use it for positive outcomes (Big Data vs
personalised content) ?
The data superhighway – is it ethical?

Can we trust how data is used?
Can we trust data usage, and do we ?
This recent survey in the US suggests
the majority of adults have serious
concerns of trust!
Trust is earned not given..... is the
gauntlet thrown down by society to
business and government to 'do better
to gain trust'?

So what does it mean for an individual?
➢ Engaging with the ethics and data agendas is not optional?
➢ If you do not put value on your data, someone will do it for you, or nobody will!
➢ Bring data trust to the top of the global tech agenda
➢ The small print is there for a reason, read it
➢ Be part of improving ethical thinking by being an active participant not a lazy
bystander

So who owns the ethics agenda then?
If the information here does anything it poses the
most basic of questions...who does own the
agenda?
The answer to that clearly is not, nor could it
possibly be, any single source
We all own the ethics agenda because we all
must. It is not something to leave to others, to
handover to the great thinkers to find solutions.
We need to own and drive this from inherent
individual perceptions, values, habits and
behaviours to the way the most important global
engines behave and act to ensure a future with
technology that passes the morality and trust tests
