Theme 3: You Are Hired! Coolie. " Story: Who Stole My Story and My Thoughts on SOPA " LEARNING FROM THE STORY - As part of ER activity, I had to narrate the story of “ Who Stole My Story and My Thoughts on SOPA ", describing the theme, You Are Hired! Coolie. " This theme deals with the concept of “work for hire” clause in employment agreement and copyright issue in creative fields such as books, film, music industry etc. My story was about the renowned Brazilian best-selling author Paulo Coelho, who is expressing his view regarding pirated e-books of his novels. According to Paulo Coelho, in book industry, pirating cannot be considered as violation to copyright issue. Pirating can act as an introduction to an artist’s work. If a person likes the idea (book in this case), then he will definitely want to buy it and keep it in his house. Hence Coelho runs a website named “Pirate Coelho” , giving links to the e-book version of his book. According to him, this has resulted in huge increase in sale of his books, many of which are bestsellers currently. As per our instructor, thinking from the perspective of a publisher, piracy can curb the sale of hard copy of book. If a person possesses a soft copy already, he is not going to buy the hardcopy, especially not in today’s era of kindle. Considering the economic effect of piracy act on potential market, the author has the right to exploit the potential market. In such case, the burden of proof lies with the author. It is for the publisher to proof how it affects their ability to make money. As now I am aware of the background theory and different other stories regarding copyright issue, I can relate my story to several others to give a holistic approach to the story, if given chance to narrate it again.
