Rules for fasting and abstinence during Lent
Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence for Catholics. Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday also are days of fasting. Here are the rules governing these obligations:
Abstinence: In the United States, all who have reached their 14th birthday are obliged to ab-stain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
Fasting: On the days of fast, only one full meal may be taken. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken but together may not add up to a second full meal. The obli-gation to fast binds all between their 18th and 59th years.

will take up a second collection next week-
end for the Holy Places.
Important schedule change for Palm
Sunday: On March 29, the Ordinary Form
will begin at 9 a.m., and the Extraordinary
Form will begin at 11 a.m. We have can-
celed the 8 a.m. Anglican Use. Depending
on the weather, all Masses that weekend will
begin with the blessing and distribution of
palms in either the courtyard or Priori Hall.
The usual Sunday schedule will resume on
Easter Sunday, April 5.
The deadline for submitting items for
the March 29 bulletin has been moved up
to noon Monday.
Our calendar of Mass intentions is solidly
booked until August in the Ordinary Form,
December in the Extraordinary Form, and
October in the Anglican Use. Even then,
available dates are few and far between for
the remainder of 2015 in all three forms of
Mass. It is virtually impossible at this time
to grant any request for a specific date.

W hen you came into church this
weekend, the statues were covered.
The fifth week of Lent until the Triduum is
known as Passiontide. During these last
days of Lent we are to keep our hearts and
souls tied to the Lord in His Passion.
So why do we veil statues? Statues are
veiled to help us realize what it would be
like NOT to have the fruits of the Passion
and Resurrection of Jesus.* Had our Lord
not died and rose from the grave, there
would be no saints, no images of the Pas-
sion, no images of the Sacred Heart.
Looked upon on a regular basis, these im-
ages become “normal” and taken for
granted. We veil them to emphasize how
good they are. By taking them away, we
appreciate their goodness in a new way.
The cross will be unveiled at the celebra-
tion of our Lord’s Passion on Good Friday.
The liturgy that day calls for the cross to be
unveiled, then for the people to come for-
ward and venerate it, traditionally by a kiss.
The other images of saints and our resur-
rected Lord remain veiled until the Easter
Vigil. Traditionally celebrated after dark on
Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil is our an-
cient anticipation of and celebration of the
Resurrection. The statues are unveiled then
because the Resurrection brings them
meaning. The Resurrection opens the doors
of heaven and allows the saints to live in
Glory.
In our Catholic Tradition we veil things
that are good, beautiful, mysterious and life-
giving: chalices, tabernacles, statues and
even girls on their first communion and
brides on their wedding day. May we enter
into this mystery with eyes and hearts open.
Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor
Why do we veil statues?
W hoever is near us and needing us must be our ‘neighbor’; it does not
matter whether he is related to us or not, whether he is morally worthy
of our help or not. The love of Christ knows no limits. It never ends; it does not
shrink from ugliness and filth. — St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
*-Throughout Lent we experience a series of increasing sacramental deprivations: We are deprived
of the Alleluia beginning on Ash Wednesday; we are deprived of the Gloria during Lent except for
Solemnities; we are deprived of the crucifix and statues at the start of Passiontide; we are deprived of
Holy Water during the Triduum; finally, we are deprived of the Lord Himself in the Blessed Sacra-
ment and the celebration of Holy Mass on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. All are restored in glori-
ous fashion — solemnly and progressively — during the Easter Vigil: first the statues, then the Glo-
ria, then the Alleluia, then the Holy Water, finally the Holy Eucharist — so many treasures in the
sacred liturgy that we come to appreciate more keenly this holy time of year.
