Letter from the Editor Tara L. Robinson, [email protected]

The Art of AlchemyThE ArT oF ALchEmy has historically been shrouded

in mystery. This ancient art is often believed to be the process of magically turning base metals, such as lead,

into gold. Webster’s defines alchemy as 1: a medieval chemi-cal science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of the base metals into gold, the discovery of a universal cure for disease, and the discovery of a means of in-definitely prolonging life 2: a power or process of transforming something common into something special and 3: an inexpli-cable or mysterious transmuting. I have my own definition of alchemy…the art of personal transformation.

Personal alchemy is most certainly about turning lead into gold, but in this case, we’re referring to emotional/spiritual lead which is transformed. Through time we become burdened by lead that accumulates in our system. It can begin even before we’re born depending on the karma with which we come into this life. And then of course there’s all the trauma we face dur-ing childhood, because no parents are perfect, and we haven’t even hit adolescence yet. During the tumultuous teen years and beyond life continues to challenge us. Until we begin to awaken from our spiritual slumber, we manage these challenges by tak-ing them on as a part of our very being. Slowly, slowly, our backpack of lead becomes heavier and heavier. We try with all our might to prove we are strong enough to carry it all. But eventually, sadness, disappointment, shame and heartache weigh down our psyche until it is difficult to separate ourselves from our emotions. We become one with our thoughts, feelings and memories and it requires a chemical shift to begin to strip away that which we are not in order to reveal who we really are.

In chemistry, the primary element used to create transmuta-tion of a substance’s chemical composition is fire, i.e. heat. Fire has long been valued for its power to purify; it is the ultimate cleansing agent. Since its discovery, fire has been used for two primary purposes, to destroy and to illuminate.

Fire is also the element used in personal alchemy. Trans-forming our psychic lead into gold can be extremely uncom-fortable. As the pressure of life heats up, we experience what is commonly called a “meltdown.” See how brilliant we are? We speak alchemy without even knowing it! Our emotional lead literally melts down so that it can be transformed into gold.

So the question becomes, when we find ourselves going through an alchemical change and feel ourselves smack dab in the middle of the burning heat and pressure required for the process, will we allow the fire to consume and us, or will we allow it to illuminate? The ultimate cleansing is by fire and surviving the fire of purification can be our greatest challenge, however, it also holds the key to our greatest awakening. Even in the midst of the hottest heat, insights and understandings be-gin to emerge. As much as we’d like to believe we are victims of circumstance, a deeper part of us knows better and seeks the illumination the fire promises.

It’s beautiful how we encounter teachers on the alchemical path. It’s in the fire when we are sure to find inspiration for hope through people we meet, books we read, seminars we hear, etc. Because our spirit believes in hope. Our spirit knows there is something more than suffering so it auto-matically gravitates toward evidence of such. Our spirit knows it can not be destroyed. Wait, doesn’t that sound a little bit like a key to eternal life? Oh yes, another alchemical metaphor. Remember, Webster’s says alchemy is “discovery of a means of indefinitely prolonging life.” The process of personal trans-formation inevitably brings us to a place where we realize our full spiritual potential. And with that realization comes the sure knowing that we are more than this body. Who we really are can never be destroyed. So there is no need to fear the fire any lon-ger. It’s a simple change agent, that’s all. We can begin to walk through the toughest challenges with our eyes wide open, bear-ing a spirit of “Bring it on!” because we can’t wait to receive the enlightenment waiting on the other side.

Webster’s also says alchemy is “the discovery of a universal cure for disease” and that is absolutely correct. As we begin to embrace more and more our spirits as being our true nature, life becomes an exciting adventure, with cool twists and turns around every corner. But, since we no longer fear being de-stroyed, our souls are at ease. We are permanently cured of a sense of dis-ease, or a feeling of being not-at-ease with oneself.

Alchemy, or personal transformation, doesn’t always feel like fire. Intense joy or gratitude can also transform us, as well as an infinite number of other possibilities.

In his book The Way of the Wizard, Deepak Chopra says, “You know little or nothing about this art, yet you have prac-ticed it every day since you were born. Every baby is born an alchemist, then loses the art, only to gain it again. Each of you mortals come into the world to seek the Grail. Everyone is cre-ated to reach freedom and fulfillment.”

This past summer Christine Miller and I launched a pilot group called “The Art of Alchemy: Discover the Wizard Inside You” with lessons based on Deepak’s book. It was a smashing success and the women who attended experienced life-chang-ing transformation during the four months we met. The par-ticipants affectionately called it “wizard-school” and their feed-back helped us to create what we believe will be an even more powerful outline for the next group. We will be holding another pilot group beginning this March, but plan to meet six times instead of four. Space is very limited so if you are interested in attending, please email [email protected].

I wish you all the happiest of holidays and I hope that as you cuddle up near the fire with your loved ones this season you will be reminded of the gift of alchemy and all the riches it brings.

May you be blessed,

Spiritual SpotlightLoCAL CHURCHES CELEbRAtE biRtH 2012

It’s a party...and everyone’s invited! Garden Park Unity Church, New Thought Unity, and Center for Spiritual Living Greater Cincinnati are join-ing together and having a birthday party for planet Earth on Dec. 22, 2012. “We want to move our community into a vibration of love and realization that we are all on this planet together. You won’t want to miss this day/night long birthday celebration of a ‘world that works for all!’” says Rev. Kathy Engelhardt of Garden Park Unity Church.

Tens of thousands have rallied to evolutionary leader Barbara Marx Hubbard’s vision and have joined her in declaring December 22, 2012 our planet’s first Birth Day. Birth 2012 hubs and evolutionary circles have formed around the world.

“Birth 2012 is about visioning a planetary shift of consciousness. The loving vibration that is excreted from our heart centers has more power than we could ever imagine,” shares Engelhardt. Engelhardt met Hubbard at the annual Unity conference in Detroit and goes on to say, “The power of love always trumps fear and negativity. We are at a tipping point on earth when we have to choose to go towards fear and negativity, which moves us toward extinction, or, towards love, which moves us into healing. We have a choice and we have the power to heal our planet by choosing where we place our attention. Science is proving the power lies within each and every one of us. Just by changing one thought a day to love instead of fear, we can move the vibration of our planet.”

A musical event is planned, as well as a pot luck dinner, dancing, drum-ming, and spreading the love at Garden Park as well as at other locations around the city. Mort and Barb Nicholson are Agents for Conscious Evolu-tion (ACEs) from Center for Spiritual Living in Cincinnati. Nancy Whitton is heading a group from New Thought Unity and Dan LeTang and Col-leen Doherty are coordinators at Garden Park. Namaste Events and Meet Up.com, as well as Garden Park Unity’s website, New Thought Unity’s website and Center for Spiritual Living’s website will have more informa-tion as the planning evolves. A video and more information can be found at www.birth2012.com. (See ads this page & page 3.)

It was such an incredible surprise when I saw it and I felt such joy inside! I so wish others could connect with and feel the joy inside themselves that laughter yoga helps facilitate bringing to the surface. It makes life so much better...and shifts consciousness too! With deep appreciation.”

oUr boDiEs ArE coNsTANTLy ExposED to harmful toxins from the air we breathe, the foods we eat, the medications we consume and from our own

metabolic activity. Of the more than 100,000 commercially used chemicals, more than 25,000 are known to be hazardous to human health. Biopsies of human fat cells show elevated lev-els of toxins such as styrene and xylene which can be found in items such as household cleaners, gasoline and paint. Many of these toxic chemicals are known to disrupt hormones and con-tribute to a multitude of chronic health problems.

Our environment is the key determinant to our health and wellness. Our bodies are very well equipped to handle natu-rally occurring toxins. However, it is not very well equipped to handle the man-made chemicals to which we are constantly exposed. To our body’s credit, there is often little to no sign of immediate danger when we are exposed to these toxins. How-ever, there is a cumulative effect that takes place over decades of exposure that eventually overwhelms our detoxification sys-tem. This leads to declining health that systemically affects the body. It can impact digestion, mental function, joint health, hor-mone balance, and skin health to name a few.

Symptoms such as, pain, headaches, and fatigue are impor-tant messages from your body. It is notifying you that some-thing is wrong. Among these symptoms a person with toxic-ity may also endure prolonged recovery times, use multiple medications, have countless doctor’s visits and poor long-term outcomes. Many people struggle to find answers to their many questions.

How can we help our body get rid of these harmful toxins and prevent chronic suffering?

Functional laboratory testing can determine the level of stress that is placed on our detoxification system and provide your doctor with information to make very specific lifestyle and nutrient recommendations. Each person undergoes a varying degree of toxin exposure and therefore, has varying degrees of detoxification ability. A unique program must be designed for each person to achieve the best results.

A doctor-supervised Purification Program is a safe and ef-fective method of cleansing the entire body of these unwanted toxins and supporting better health. This program can help optimize whole body detoxification. The purification program should be gentle and easy to follow, with accompanying life-

style interventions (diet, exercise, stress management). An effective purification program usually lasts 30 days,

which is enough time to create healthier long-term habits. A well-designed program will eliminate offending foods, increase the intake of healthy and nourishing foods and include a gentle exercise regimen as well. Specific medical foods and shakes may be included to enhance the purification process by deliver-ing the right micro-nutrients to the body. Other support nutri-ents may include fiber, essential fats and alkalizing vegetable-based drinks. This customized protocol can have an extremely beneficial impact on many systems in the body.

By assisting the body in eliminating these harmful toxins, we can substantially improve overall health and rid the body of symptoms such as:

• Chronic fatigue • Headaches or migraines• Gas, bloating, heartburn• Bad breath and body odors• Skin rashes or itchy skin• Constipation or diarrhea • Joint pain and arthritis• Poor concentration, memory and focus• Allergic reactions

In addition, a good purification program can help increase a person’s productivity, slow down the aging process, assist in weight loss and promote clearer, brighter skin. If one is looking to address a chronic health problem, or looking for a kick-start to a healthy lifestyle, a customized purification program is a step in the right direction.

Chakras:An Ancient System Still In Use

Today by Libby Winterhalter, LmT

hoLisTic ThErApiEs, often referred to today as alternative medicine, have been in existence for thou-sands of years. And while they only recently gained

significant acceptance in the United States, these practices have been tapping into ancient philosophies and practices for ages. For example, ayurveda, shiatsu, healing touch, yoga and many others, including massage, often explore and address a unique system of energy called chakras.

The ancient and sacred texts of Hinduism, called the Vedas, describe chakras as spinning wheels of light or energy. These energy centers serve to bridge the physical body with the mind and spirit of the individual. When there is a proper flow of energy through the chakras, the physical body, emotions, and spiritual aspects will function in good order. And, the person may say they feel centered or balanced. Blocked or a restricted flow of energy, on-the-other-hand, will likely result in feelings of depression as well as other health-related issues or problems.

Chakras 101 There are seven main chakras that align vertically from

the base of the spine to the top of the head. For those people who are well-versed in the field of intuitive healing or psychic studies, chakras are considered “psychic organs.” Biologically speaking, an organ in the human body is a collection of tissues that come together to perform a common function. Chakras too, though not palpable like an organ, have specific areas of re-sponsibility. And, almost anyone can learn to see or sense his/her chakras if they are open and willing to explore the subject.

There are many chakras throughout and within the body. In America, the primary chakras are usually referred to by its

numerical order. They also have a Sanskrit term and an English name as well. Each chakra has a particular symbol and, usually, a color associated with it. These energy centers are often de-scribed as having a funnel facing outward from the front of the body and one facing outward from the back of the body. In each case, the funnel is described as being positioned so that the nar-row part of the funnel is closer to the body. Visualization, medi-tation and massage can help balance the flow of energy among the chakras. Here is a brief description of the major chakras, including the names, location and functions:

LiFE is A creative process. As chil-dren we learn about life through play and are taught its applications

through academics. It is the practical ap-plications more than play, that are most thoroughly impressed upon us as we grow to become responsible adults. In time however we come upon opportuni-ties to realize that the most important life lesson was learned while drawing, sing-ing, dancing, telling stories and playing make believe; and that is we are natu-rally creative.

As an artist I often meet adults who confidently assert they are not very cre-ative despite the fact that they have ca-reers, homes, relationships, or families that they build on and manage regularly. Eventually, the completion of respon-sibilities or unexpected changes, bring up circumstances that beg the question be asked and answered, “Now what?” While it might seem sensible to stick with what we know, that is sometimes no longer an option. When “Now what?” comes up we have the opportunity to consciously choose what and how we wish to create in our lives.

The first step in reclaiming our cre-ative power is to realize we have never lost it. Much of our creative abilities are used to build a safe, stable, dependable

life. When that seems to change, wheth-er it is a career change, empty nesting, or something else, we are able to see what is safe, stable and dependable is not what we created but that we can create. If we look at life changes through practical eyes we may not be satisfied until we once again have order. When we look at it through an artist’s eyes, we can thor-oughly appreciate the chaos of creating.

Next, eliminate limiting conditions. Life is full of conditioning that require our choices have to make sense. This can have three draw-backs, stopping before we ever start, replacing passion with practicality, and only doing what we al-ready know. Try these chants to break through:

Start Before you Stop. Use your creativity to work around, over and through all the reasons the practical mind may offer as to why there’s no use in trying. There is always a way. If you haven’t found it yet, you’re not finished looking.

passion Before practicality. There will always be practical applica-tions for your creative energy, but for now prioritize practicality after finding your passion. Make the play and adven-ture of being creative just as important as taking the trash to the curb, and dare to dream without making sense.

Be Comfortable Not Knowing. Einstein said imagination is more im-portant than knowledge. He also said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. If things have changed, don’t try to change them back, move forward. Not knowing plays a critical role in creativity and even brings with it some important health benefits like growing new brain cells.

Finally, find ways to experience and express your creative energy with others, it is the collaboration of creative power that makes life an exciting multidimen-sional adventure.

ThE iDEA oF “whole living” generally revolves around the notion of understanding how the

mind, body and spirit each contribute to overall health and the need for balance between the three aspects. Interestingly, for many people, it is much easier to adopt a whole living mindset when they are healthy and feeling good, but often becomes harder to manage when illness or disease strikes.

Ironically, at just the time a holistic perspective is needed the most, the focus on the body’s woes and the time-consum-ing demands of medical treatment and therapies can be overwhelming, leaving the psychological stresses overlooked. In my work at Cancer Support Commu-nity, a non-profit cancer support organi-zation formerly known as The Wellness Community, I have found this is often the case when people are fighting cancer. The medical diagnosis, treatment plan, and physical needs become so great, that emotional and psychological needs are sometimes ignored.

In fact, recent research supports the need for a balanced approach between

medical and emotional care for people facing cancer. A ground breaking report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2007 called Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs declared psychosocial support an essential part of cancer care and stated that community-based nonprofit organi-zations are crucial to delivering this sup-port and should be better incorporated into the continuum of care.

This report, along with other research showing that how we think and feel can have an effect on our immune systems, validate what Cancer Support Commu-nity (CSC) has known and worked hard to deliver in Greater Cincinnati since 1990. To this end, all CSC programs have been developed based on mind/body research and have been shown to strengthen the link between medical and emotional health.

CSC offers over 220 programs in Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky each month for people affected by can-cer, including support groups, educa-tional programs, healthy lifestyle class-es, and programs that explore spirituality

and expressive techniques such as art, writing and music – all which help re-lieve stress and restore psychological and emotional well-being. All of our programs are led by highly qualified professionals and are offered completely free of charge to people with any kind of cancer at any stage, their loved ones and caregivers, and cancer survivors. Programs are scheduled at CSC facili-ties in Blue Ash and Ft. Wright, as well as offsite partner locations in Anderson, Clifton, downtown, Montgomery, and Western Hills.

CSC’s healthy lifestyle classes are especially popular since people affected by cancer often experience high levels of stress due to fatigue, problems sleeping, worry about the future or other causes. These classes – which include Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, Healthy-Steps: Lebed Method, Rebuilding Health, Relaxation & Guided Imagery and Cooking for Wellness - complement medical care and provide an opportunity to stretch, strengthen, relax, unwind, clear the mind, get out of the house and connect with others.

If you are living with cancer or know someone who is, please visit our website for more information: http://CancerSup-portCincinnati.org.About the author: Kelly Schoen, MSW, LISW-S, is the Program Direc-tor at Cancer Support Community Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky where she develops a full array of programs to offer people affected by cancer the support, education, and hope they need to improve their quality of life and improve their recovery process.

Nurturing and Celebratingthe Individual Voice

mAry piErcE brosmEr founded Women Writing for (a) Change with the conviction that “when women and girls are safe, empowered, prosperous, expressive

and authentic, so is society.” On September 5th, 1991, fifteen women gathered to write and listen together in a Cincinnati office space. Thus began Women Writing for (a) Change. The practices that Mary employed in that first circle, and the current facilitators continue to follow, create a safe and nurturing space in which women can take risks in sharing their writing, their stories, their truths.

“We kept using what worked and adjusted what needed improvement,” says Mary about the differences between those early days and now. Today, the profound experience of sitting in a circle with women of diverse experience and listening deeply to one another remains much the same as that first circle twen-ty-one years ago.

Each 2 ½ hour class begins with a poem, a way of honoring reverence for language and setting a theme. Participants spend time writing together: prompts are offered but not mandatory. Then, the women read their writings to one another in large and small groups, and they listen deeply using practices that help them improve those skills. A relevant article might be read and discussed, and ideas about the creative process are shared.

Early in the organization’s history, women in the classes longed for their daughters to experience Women Writing for (a) Change, to be encouraged to write and give voice to their young inner truths, and to step into their own authority at a younger age. Out of these mothers’ longings was born Young Women Writing for (a) Change. This program has been in continuous operation since 1996, offering summer camps and school year classes for girls aged 9-20. One young woman wrote about her experience, “Being able to listen to other young women, be-ing able to speak without feeling judged, being here in such an honest atmosphere is a great thing. I have learned more about myself as a writer and as a person.”

In 2004, the school offered the first Feminist Leadership Academy (FLA), which gave women the training to be certi-fied to facilitate WWfaC circles, or licensing to start their own school in another city. Four FLA classes to date have graduated 54 women, and some of those women started schools which still

operate today in Indiana, Vermont, Alabama, and Colorado. In 2006 and 2008 the Young Women’s FLA trained thirteen high school girls, and several of those girls who are now in college, return to Cincinnati yearly to teach in our summer camps.

A training program was offered in 2011 for those interested in outreach and specialty classes. Over the years the outreach programs have brought these experiences to children at risk of homelessness, prisoners, the developmentally disabled, the elderly, and victims of domestic violence, among others. As a non-profit organization, WWf(a)C’s mission reads: “to nurture and celebrate the individual voice by facilitating supportive writing circles and by encouraging people to craft more con-scious lives through the art of writing and the practices of com-munity.” When those in WWf(a)C leadership are asked if this work continues to be important today, the answer is a resound-ing “Yes!”

I facilitate one of our core classes and have women in my class who return semester after semester. Some women like the discipline of a weekly class to keep them writing. Many come because the sense of shared community is palpable. Women come with a huge variety of experiences: there are working mothers, empty nesters, executives, students, pastors, artists, teachers, etc. We receive consistent feedback from the women, girls and men who participate that our classes provide invalu-able time for personal expression, renewal, self-care, and con-nection.

More information about WWf(a)C can be found at www.womenwriting.org. We offer core classes for women, several specialty classes, outreach programs and programs for young women. This is the ideal time to plan ahead for our 2013 class-es and summer camps. (Note: Radio Interview with author can be heard Dec. 11 on WAIF 88.3FM, 3-5pm. See ad page 8.)

ThE prEsTiGioUs New England Journal of Medicine recently published a review and analysis of the research to date on whether consumption of organic produce leads

to health benefits. The question is an important one, but the an-swer still is not clear.

The studies cited in this review show that even organic produce is frequently contaminated with harmful pesticides and other chemicals. Children who consume organic fruits and vegetables still have detectable levels of these toxins in their urine, but at lower levels than children who consumed standard produce. It is unclear how these organic products became con-taminated. But we advise that even organic produce should be carefully washed before we eat it.

And yet the question of whether the extra cost of organic foods leads to better health remains unanswered. Even low lev-els of contamination diminish any potential benefit, and assess-ments of what we get from eating organic have been short term--months to at most a few years. Only longer-term studies with truly uncontaminated produce will determine the real value of organic foods.

Until we have better studies, it is most prudent to grow your own vegetables and fruit if you can, using cow manure and avoiding chemical application. Purchase organic produce if it is affordable and available. And carefully wash everything to minimize unwanted additives.

As long-term readers of our column may know, we like to bring healthy, vegetable based dishes to any potluck or other “bring a dish” party. They are always popular, and (sadly) are often the only vegetables other than crudités on the table. Healthy side dishes are more important at the holidays than ever, for the obvious reason that we all tend to overeat unhealthful foods this time of year. Do yourself and your friends and family a favor – whip-up one (or both) of these delicious and quick-to-prepare sides, which also will enhance your own holiday table.

WE’rE EDGiNG cLosEr and closer toward the highly promulgated date of December 21, 2012. But what does it really mean? We’ve heard the hoopla

for years about how the Mayan calendar signifies the end of the world. Yet, throughout history, the end of the world has been pre-dicted many times over. Needless to say, it has yet to be fulfilled. If we presume that December 21, 2012 is not to be the literal end of the world, but rather is symbolic, then what does it mean?

The Aztec calendar, which is usually mistaken as the Mayan was carved in stone during the time of the Fifth Sun (each Sun representing a 6,625 year cycle). It is similar to the Mayan Tzol-kin calendar regarding dates and cycles, yet, it is considerably longer; continuing on for another two Suns–the equivalent of 13,250 years.

“Most people think that the knowledge associated with the calendars of ancient Mexico did not survive, but this is not the case,” says Sergio Magaña, “Ocelocoyotl,” a mystic and teacher of the Nahuatl tradition. “We have a full and living tradition that was hidden so it could remain pure and intact until it was needed. The knowledge was preserved by the guardians in the Nahuatl language and passed along in secret from teacher to student for 1,460 years. It includes teachings, ceremonies, practices, dances, philosophy, prophecy, and in-depth understanding of the mathe-matics of the cosmos and how this all relates to human conscious-ness. It is being made available, because it is needed now.”

I initially met Sergio at a conference in Hawaii where he shared his vast wealth of knowledge of the ancient Aztec/Toltec tradition. The Toltecs were the masters and teachers of the Az-tecs and Mayans. All were experts in understanding the relation-ship between subtle energy, astronomical phenomena and human consciousness. They knew how to interpret the universal order that governs all of existence by measuring and observing cycles of time (day to night, lunar, solar, stellar and galactic). Through eons of experience, they were able to perceive and understand the impact these cycles of time had on the earth (the elements, seasons, and tides) as well as on human consciousness and per-ception.

The profundity of the Aztec calendar is a deeply intercon-nected relationship between human consciousness and the cycles of the universe. In fact, our souls are understood to be a macrocosm of the microcosm: The Sun - our awakened consciousness; The Moon - our ego, underworld/unconscious, shadow self; The Night - our nagual (sleeping/spiritual self); The Day - our tonal (who we are while awake).

The winter solstice of December 21, 2012 marks a transi-tional ending of an era and the birth of a new one. At that precise moment and time, the Fifth and Sixth Sun, will have equivalent power. From that point forward, the Fifth Sun will continue to step down from its throne, slowly handing over the celestial crown to the Sixth Sun in the nine years that follow. It’s an energetic cosmic changing of the guard. It is this nine year pe-riod as the Suns changeover, which the Keepers of the Ancient Knowledge say we need to pay attention to and utilize. For in 2021, the Sixth Sun will step into full reign, ending the 6,625 cycle of the Fifth Sun, and birthing a new one, the influence of which will be felt upon the earth for thousands of years.

The Fifth Sun marked an era of light orienting human awareness upon the external, driven toward exploration and understanding of the physical world, as well as conquest and exploitation. The Sixth Sun will be an era of night transitioning human awareness toward the internal realms.

This transition of cycles is symbolized by earthquakes. Old structures and/or paradigms will fall, both externally and inter-nally. It is our opportunity to find out more about who we really are. It is easy to be kind when everything is going well, but the litmus test on one’s spiritual realization is when the going gets tough. The new Sun marks a time when we’ll move quickly to-ward our own inner cataclysms, or our own personal triumphs, depending upon how integrated our ego structures are.

Our souls reflect the cosmos, our bodies the earth. Human consciousness is immensely beautiful and powerful. We have within us such depth and potential. Yet, it is up to us to recog-nize it, work on ourselves and practice what our hearts know to be true. To liberate ourselves from our instinctual drives and our shadow is a life-long endeavor. In his new book, 2012 – 2021 Dawn of the Sixth Sun, Sergio Magana Ocelocoyotl tells us that the Keepers of the Ancient Knowledge are saying the time for mastery is now.

Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

ThE hoLiDAy sEAsoN is often a time of indulgence...leading to unwanted pounds and tight pants. It is possible to be healthy and to enjoy the holidays at the same time.

Some of the herbs below can help you on your journey, during the holidays and for supporting your physical wellness goals in the New Year. They are some of Dr. Oz’s favorites!

green Coffee bean extract: This is one of the newest weight loss crazes. Researchers suspect it is the chlorogenic acid in the unroasted beans that aid in weight loss. It is known to help reduce glucose absorption in the body. So logically, your blood sugar is lower, which forces your body to turn to the fat stores for energy rather than sugar. The most recent study on green coffee bean published in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syn-drome and Obesity journal followed a group of 16 adults who supplemented with green coffee bean extract for just 12 weeks. Over the course of the study, the subjects lost an average of 17 pounds each -- this was 10.5% of their overall body weight and 16% of their overall body fat.

glucomannan: The hardest part about resisting all the great food during the holidays can be overcoming your appetite. If you’re always hungry, make using your will-power easier by taking Glucomannan to feel fuller. It is a natural appetite sup-pressant. This soluble fiber is derived from the root of the kon-jac plant and is often referred to as “nature’s skinny sponge” because it literally soaks up your hunger. When consumed, glucomannan “sponges” up water in the digestive tract, reduc-ing the absorption of carbs and cholesterol and thus supporting weight loss.

grapeseed oil: Technically a fruit oil, grapseed oil is high in linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid). It has been shown to help control hunger and reduce body fat by promoting insulin resistance. This good fat slows stomach emptying, keeping you feeling fuller longer.

White Kidney bean extract: Dr. Oz says White Kidney Bean Extract is one of his favorite fat busters. Normally, when carbohydrates are consumed, the body digests them as sugar which goes straight into the bloodstream and gets deposited as fat. However, White Kidney Bean Extract has been shown to prevent the stomach from breaking down carbs into simple sug-ars — so the calories are not absorbed into your body. Take this herb before meals containing starch or carbs.

satiereal saffron extract: The use of Satiereal Saffron can help prevent snacking. It has been clinically shown to cre-ate satiety, which in turn supports the reduction of both weight and inches in combination with diet and exercise. Satiereal’s unique mechanism helps to improve and maintain levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which increases the satiety state, thereby decreasing appetite, cravings and emotional eating.

I hope this helps. Happy Holidays!

AccorDiNG To NAysAyErs and doomsday sensa-tionalists, December 21, 2012 is predicted to be the end of the world – as we know it. The last phrase is the key.

Some, such as Mausumi Kipati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, predict that the upcoming Solar Cycle 24 will be an intensely strong sunspot cycle that will majorly impact telecommunications, air traffic control, satellite trans-missions, power grids and other systems. Disruptive, but not catastrophic. They interpret this to mean it will bring about the end of the earth, or an apocalypse, which may be true. Apoca-lypse is a shortened form of the ancient Greek phrase “apokal-upsis eschaton,” which means “revelation at the end of an aeon or age” – not the end of the world, but rather the revealing of new information or insights.

Others think that an asteroid or comet will collide with Earth on 12/21/12 due to a Galactic Alignment based on algorithms of The Bible Code, written by Michael Drosnin.

However, the most prevalent theory is that since the Ma-yan Long Calendar appears to end on 12/21/12, that means the world will end then too. But this is merely the end of a cycle of 5,121 years. To the Mayans, the end of a cycle would be a time to rejoice, renew and celebrate. Thus, it makes more sense that 12/21/12 will signal an ushering in of a new age, a shift in consciousness, divine transformation and a higher realm of awareness.

Or, as we like to think of it, an opportunity to step into joy. And there already are signs of this breakthrough all around us. These are hard times for many people. Look around, who is working toward a more hopeful, helpful world, and who is hunkering down to hold on to everything they’ve got? Who is working on creating more love, and who is putting their energy toward fear? Sometimes it’s the people with the most posses-

sions who are the most fearful. And those with the least spread-ing the most love. These are the lessons of this time.

When you consider the state of the planet, the environmen-tal degradation, the prisons full to overflowing, the hunger and the violence here and around the globe - the world appears to be screaming for a fresh start, a do-over.

So what can you do to bring this positive transformation about? Align with love, with joy, with peace. Create your own center of peace in your heart and your household. Ignore the racket and bumpiness out there in the world. Turn off the TV news, let the gossip go. When your neighbor needs help, hap-pily give and do what you can, with your children along side you. So that they learn early that helping brings joy, hunkering brings pain.

This is not a single day change – December 21, 2012 will lighten the world, but will not be the total transformation. What we expect, then and into the future, is what we will get. Set your heart to joy; step into joy on that day and don’t look back.

The Gifts We Leave Behindby rev. D. michelle Wisbith

I think the type of gifts people give can reveal a lot about them. My great Aunt Therese gave practical gifts. When my parents were married Aunt Ther-ese gave them a garbage can. Her log-ic, which she happily explained to the puzzled newlyweds, was threefold. “It’s something you need, you’ll use it every day and no one else will give you one.”

My mom was practical minded as well, but more often than not her gifts elicited a personal connection. She made it a point to really understand who you were, even if she had only met you a week before.

One of my favorite stories about Mom’s gift giving came from her close friend. Gail once confided to Mom that she’d always had a thing about attics; she thought they were the neatest places to explore. One year, shortly before Gail’s birthday, Mom called and invited her to visit. When she arrived at the house, she found Mom had set up a party in the at-tic. This was no easy feat! Mom’s attic was packed full and was only accessible by a rickety, fold away ladder. Regard-less, Mom had streamers, balloons, a cake and lots of things to explore.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Mom’s gifts lately, partly because I find one ev-erywhere I look in my house and partly because her passing is still fresh in my heart.

The best gifts I received from her, however, aren’t things I can hold; they’re lessons that have become part of my character and mindset. When I was young, if a lost friendship or bad day on the playground caused me to come home ranting about how much I hated

the other person, I can recall her point-ing out, “You don’t really hate the per-son. You dislike what they did.” No mat-ter what I broke, crashed or burned, the first question she’d ask after finding out was always, “Are you okay?” And when I’d put forth extra effort or do something noteworthy and would ask her, “Are you proud of me?” she’d smile and reply, “I’m always proud of you, but today I’m especially pleased.”

I learned from watching her deliver groceries and clothes to families less for-tunate than ours (and we ourselves were less fortunate a lot of the time) that help-ing others in need is just something you do. I understood that a crowded house always has room for more if someone needs a safe and welcoming place to stay. I saw that confronting and overcoming your fears isn’t easy, but it’s necessary when teaching your children how to do the same.

All these things got me thinking. I know my family and friends will have stories to tell about me after I’m gone - heck, they have stories they tell about me now - but will they remember the gifts I left behind or just the things I gave them that came with a price tag?

Will they…Be unafraid to try new things and explore their interests when they think about my enthusiasm for new adventures and projects? Remember that laughter is important and funny can be found everywhere if you look at situa-tions in a different light? Take a moment to recognize when someone’s having a bad day and ask what they can do to make it better? Be more willing to help others as they hopefully recall with fond-ness my habit of rescuing strays (animals and people) and assisting those in need? Continue my tradition of always making the phrase “I love you” one of the last things said when parting company - even if it’s an electronic parting? And finally,

will they show by their actions that you always stand behind and stand up for those you love?

I really hope so. I’ve discovered that the gifts you can’t return are the best ones to leave behind.

Everyone has a story worth sharing...

November and December 2012by Diane Samsel

November 6: Mercury Retrograde and Fourth Quarter Moon. An ongoing drama intensifies as it draws

to a close. Super sensitive individuals in your life might provide the catalyst for much needed change. After serious thought it’s quite possible you’ll act impulsively in the moment and reverse directions. Mercury turns direct November 26. Care-fully reconsider all commitments until then. November 11: Neptune Direct. Social contacts related to your professional pursuits offer an opportunity to make a dream come true. Having the ability to clarify the nebulous and satisfy members of an uprising will come in handy. November 13: New Moon and Solar Eclipse. A relation-ship breakthrough dissolves the boundaries formerly separating you from “the other.” This intense lunation requires that you rethink everything. Deception awaits the gullible. A clear mind guides you to tremendous growth and a renewed perspective: rewarding your relationship efforts.November 16: Mercury in Scorpio and Mars in Capri-corn. Mercury’s return to Scorpio reignites the need to rethink a relationship issue. The question might be: Are you kidding your-self? Now’s the time to take executive action. Freedom is calling and if you’re not meeting your goals in life, change course now. Opportunity awaits those who focus energy intensely on the one thing you desire passionately.November 20: Second Quarter Moon. Idealistically you may want to be all things to all people but that sentiment may overwhelm you today. Pick your battles carefully and focus on just one thing. Align yourself with an emotionally supportive ally.November 21: Sun in Sagittarius and Venus in Scorpio. The heart soars, the heart smolders: your choice. The best option is to become a philosopher. You’ll be chasing rainbows with rose-colored glasses firmly attached to your face and there could be lots of offers to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. There will be fog. Enjoy it with your friends. Know that it’s only fog. Don’t buy any bridges.November 26: Mercury Direct. Finally! Out of the fog and feet on the ground. Enjoy normalcy again. Enough airy-fairy. Set good boundaries and go for a change of direction into which you can put extra energy and which supports your need for security.November 28: Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse. Stability in life depends upon meeting others with an open heart. The heart is the wellspring that supports all of life through which you feel fully alive. Your point of view empowers others into action—getting things accomplished.December 6: Fourth Quarter Moon. Having a sense of purpose directs an overabundance of enthusiasm into construc-

tive action. Thoughts and words carry a lot of punch and can be enough to launch important projects. December 10: Mercury in Sagittarius. Standing firm in your position guides others in the effort to make a dream come true. A lofty mind set supports the mastering of power in this case. Your community has your back.December 13: Uranus Direct and New Moon. Enthusiasm may run away with you today as your need to break free grabs hold of your thought processes—you’re off to the races but re-member there are other horses on the track. Strategy helps set the pace and puts you in position to win. And you will be obsessed with winning.December 15: Venus in Sagittarius. In an effort to redefine who you want to be, others may lead you astray. You want to try something new but your friends need you to remain the same. Respectfully listen to what others have to say and then carry out your plans for renewal.December 20: Second Quarter Moon. Seeing the bright side of things gets a lift from an incoming message as the holiday season enters high gear. Optimism and a carefree attitude contrib-ute to the social enjoyment. Expect to be well entertained.December 21: Sun in Capricorn and Winter Solstice. The need for stability in life is celebrated with the return of the light. The revolution has taken its toll on everyone and today the awareness that it’s all been worth the effort is a cause for quiet celebration.December 25: Mars in Aquarius. This day is best spent engaging in the company of good friends, favorite relatives, good neighbors and the community at large. The need to share with others feels enormously satisfying.December 28: Full Moon. Life’s a bit intense today. Man-age upsets by bringing your goals down to the emotional level for anchoring. Once secure in your strategy you can successfully advance your agenda. December 31: Mercury in Capricorn. What matters most is that other’s notice and approve of the good job you’re doing. Be on the lookout for emails, letters and conversations in which others acknowledge your important contribution.

DVD ReviewSacred Journey of the Heart

An inspiring, new documentary investigates the healing power of the heart and proposes that we are in the midst of creating the biggest shift in consciousness of all times—a shift towards heart-centered living. Sacred Journey of the Heart combines modern science with ancient wisdom traditions to illuminate the powerful connection we share with each other and the earth and offers profound insights and tools for transforming your life.

Led by filmmaker Ronna Prince, a life coach and inspirational speaker, Sacred Journey of the Heart features today’s leading experts, researchers, physicians and more including: Gregg Braden, Dr. Deborah Rozman, Cynthia James, Colin Tipping, Mary Morrissey and more. “This film started out as a promise I made to myself as a child, someday I would be heard and someday I would heal my heart,” reveals Prince. For more information please visit: www.sacredjourneyoftheheart.com.

ThE spiriTUALiTy NETWorK™ announces the launch of “Life School,” a new, year-long teleseminar curriculum which features leading experts in self help,

personal transformation, alternative health, creative arts and more. The Spirituality Network (TSN) is an “inter-network” of spiritual applications and websites that empower people to pursue their personal transformational goals and visions, and celebrate their interests, friendships, and more.

Life School (LS) is an innovative approach to transforma-tional learning and expansive living. LS offers a year-long im-mersive learning experience featuring 52 teachers. The program offers a chance to dive into deeper conversations with leaders of the transformational movement, like with Jack Canfield about success, Barbara Marx Hubbard on conscious evolution, Mas-ter Mantak Chia onqigong, Dr. Bernie Siegel on love and heal-ing, Dr. Stan Grof on mastering breath, Peter Russell on the art of letting go, Peggy Dylan on firewalk and transcending fear, Swami Beyondananda on the power of laughter, and many oth-ers.

“We’re all about bringing cutting edge innovation to the lifestyles of health and sustainability movement,” states Moses Ma, founder of The Spirituality Network and Life School. In addition to Life School, properties of TSN include: SoulMatch Dating (http://soulmatchdating.com) - a dating site built around concepts of spiritual evolution and transformational honesty,

and The Breakthrough (http://the-breakthrough.com) - a revo-lutionary iPhone/iPad app that will transform the practice of life coaching.

“Through this exceptional program (LS), students will be able to learn about the expansion of consciousness, transforma-tional relationships and sexuality, energy healing and qigong, the science of detox and next generation fitness, and even how to draw or sculpt with your heart and soul – with leading ex-perts, teachers and best-selling authors,” says Moses Ma. He adds, “This is a one year long adventure inward, during which we hope to explore new and undiscovered social networking territory together, and to trigger the most profound and positive transformations imaginable.”

Life School offers a unique and unprecedented self-discov-ery program based on growth challenges that combine lifelong learning with spiritual truth-or-dare, as students are encouraged, week by week, to expand their beliefs about what’s possible and embrace true change. What’s more...each teleseminar leads into ancillary workshops, intensives, retreats , meet-ups and fun so-cial events. The collective notes of this group adventure will be published in a book called Life School: 52 Challenges to Change Your Life.

For more about the program, please visit http://thisislife-school.com.

Go Green for the HolidaysDid you know...during the holidays, our garbage increases by more than 25%?

• Make homemade gifts – when possible, use recycled items.• Wrap packages in reusable bags or newspaper or use decorated boxes that require no wrapping paper.• Focus on traditions instead of spending money - spend time doing a special activity or outing as a gift.• Recycle wrappings, trees and electronics.• Consider donating to a charity or organization as a gift instead of purchasing store bought items. • If you shop online, remember to consolidate your orders.

Did you know...every issue of Whole Living Journal is a “green” issue? We use recycled paper and soy-based ink. Don’t forget to recycle this issue when you’re done with it, or better yet, share it with a friend!

COMPLETE FAMILY DENTAL CARE

Montgomery Dental Medicine is like no dental office you’ve

visited. Dedicated to your total well-being, our staff forms long-term re-lationships with you and your family built on open, honest dialogue and a thorough knowledge of all the factors that impact everyone’s health.

Our approach is successful because it’s a more sensitive process of listen-ing to your thoughts, questions and concerns.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACHTO BETTER HEALTH

Do you wake up exhausted? Are you fatigued during the day even

though you get a “good night’s sleep”? Do you suffer Insomnia and CFS? Do you wake up with a headache? Do you have head, neck or jaw pain?

For 27 years, Dr. Bosma has enjoyed marked success relieving headaches and migraine symptoms, TMJ pain and dysfunction, stiff and painful neck and shoulder muscles, and an ex-tremely successful natural sinus regi-men to ease nasal breathing effort.

Our integrated approach combines multiple preventative medicine dis-ciplines. Since our healthcare profes-sionals have over 60 years of combined experience, we’re able to exceed your expectations and achieve our goal of improving your quality of life.

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTOYOUR BODY

Snoring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In

turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relation-ships.

Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.

TRANSFORM YOUR SMILE

Does your smile make you feel confident and attractive? Or, do

you cringe when you have your photo taken? Have you lived with discol-ored teeth, chips or cracks, or mottled coloring for long enough?

Transform your smile in as few as one or two visits to Montgomery Den-tal Medicine. Find new confidence and take years off your looks!

We’ll repair your older bridgework (cracks, chips and discoloration), and we can close up gaps between teeth. We are committed to making you feel and look your best.

WHY CHOOSE MONTGOMERY DENTAL MEDICINE?

Our practice is different. Yes, you’ll see us for routine check-

ups, cleanings, x-rays, whitening, fillings and, yes, sometimes for seri-ous work. But we also are laying the groundwork for a long-term relation-ship with you and your family—one that will help you all enjoy better health for life. We’re treating you, not just your teeth!

Go south out of Old Montgomery. Cross over Ronald Reagan Hwy. Turn left at 1st light into Montgomery Station Office Condos. Right at 1st stop sign into our lot. Still not sure? Please feel free tocall us for directions. 513-891-5860.
