Introduction This report details the Lighting design and assessment for the proposed new Wholebake Ltd facility in Corwen, Denbighshire.

Lighting Design Brief To provide an exterior lighting scheme to the service roads, car park, loading bays, service yard, main entrance, rear fire path and break out areas. Priority consideration to minimising light pollution, intrusive light, glare and consideration to the neighbouring residential properties and potential bat foraging sites on the north and east boundary.

The lighting design and product selection is based on guidance from the Chartered institute of Building services Engineers (CIBSE), Lighting Industry Federation, BS5489 and many guidelines set out by Campaign for dark skies and the Campaign to protect rural England.

Lighting Design Levels The lighting design target levels(Lux) are for Category E2 environmental zone (low brightness areas for Rural, small villages or relatively dark urban locations)

The design has attempted to keep within or even lower than recommended or suggested levels as detailed in the lighting calculation documents and summarised in table 1.1

Lighting Design and product selection criteria The following section provides a summary of the design considerations taken to each area. This can be crossed referenced with the lighting layouts, lighting calculations, luminaire schedule and data sheets contained within the appendices.

Car Park Proposed are 5m Twin and Single head LED street light columns c/w asymmetric optics and anti-glare baffle

Due to the sensitive situation on the east elevation we have restricted the height of the columns to 5m reducing the visual impact and light spill. This lower mounting height also allows the wattage of the fitting to be reduced. A further anti-glare baffle can be fitted reducing the direct glare when viewed from certain angles.

These design measures do however slightly compromise the lighting uniformity of the lighting scheme for the user

To the east elevation of the building a wall recessed LED low level floor washer has been proposed. And mounted approximately 600mm above ground level. The fitting has asymmetric reflector and the led module is concealed within the fitting so these is no direct view of the LED so achieving very low glare and controlled wash of light to the pathway along the east elevation.

To Service road junctions within the car park proposed are 850mm high LED bollards c/w with concealed Led module and low brightness reflector, directing the light towards the ground from a low glare source. An optional 180 degree baffle has been added to certain bollards directing the light towards the parking bays and away from the site boundaries.

Front Breakout Areas To buildings south elevation proposed is an 850mm high LED bollard c/w with concealed Led module and low brightness reflector directing the light towards the ground from a low glare source. An optional 180 degree baffle has been added to the bollards directing the light towards breakout areas only and away from the site boundaries.

Service Roads and Service Yard Proposed are 4m Single head LED street light columns c/w road optics and anti-glare baffle

Loading Bays Proposed are LED wall and under canopy mounted LED floodlight c/w and anti-glare baffle and adjustable mounting bracket allowing the throw of light to be adjusted away form the verical as possible

Rear -Fire path Proposed are LED wall mounted projectors mounted 4m above floor level. These are also fitted with an optional adjustable extension arm and anti-glare Cowell to allowing the reflected light to be adjusted away from the building and further glare reduction from the Cowell.

These design measures do however slightly compromise the lighting uniformity of the lighting scheme for the user.

Summary The lighting levels achieved are within the target guidelines and careful consideration has been given to light fitting selection to achieve low glare and minimum light spill. The proposals have achieved a ‘dark corridor’ along the northern and eastern boundaries to prevent any impacts on foraging bats as identified in the Ecology Assessment. Further design and modeling will be carried out at detail design stage to ensure that the layout achieves appropriate light levels for site users while continuing to maintain low spill to adjacent boundaries. At this stage a process of rationalisation will be carried out to assess where baffles are required and where these can be omitted to allow lower numbers of fittings to be installed.
