Who’s on 1 st ? Who’s on 2 nd ? Who’s on 3 rd ? The revolving doors of our staff “make up” continues so I’m going to use my space in The Record to keep you aware of these changes. Pastor Tom Park has accepted the CALL to serve as Associate Pastor & Campus Pastor. His installation will take place on Sunday, June 3 rd , at 7:00 PM. used her to help open our eyes to ministry avenues beyond the walls of our church

building.

Collette Christoffers, Parish Nurse who had gone from being our volunteer Parish Nurse

to part-time salaried Parish Nurse is now back to volunteer Parish Nurse. Yes, she has

come “full circle”! She is returning to graduate school and has accepted a staff nurse

position at Essentia. We are thankful that she is willing to continue on as our Parish

Nurse on a limited basis. This means she will not be able to make as many calls, will not

continue “Faithfully Fit”, and will not continue to coordinate the Bus Ministry. So –

volunteers are needed! If someone volunteers to lead “Faithfully Fit”, the program can

continue and Collette will gladly train the volunteer. The Bus Ministry is not a big job;

primarily someone needs to be available to be a phone contact person for the riders and

to pass the messages on to the scheduled bus driver. We thank God for Collette’s

faithful service!

Carmen Hutchins, Business Manager, has given her notice of resignation for two

reasons: 1) To have evenings free for family time. 2) She received a promotion and pay

increase at her full time job. Carmen has done an excellent job and will be missed. We

are looking for a replacement for her prior to August 25th .

Pastor George Krueger will remain temporarily as Visitation Pastor. The Church Council

will discuss this at the May 29th meeting. We have so appreciated the joy, warmth, and

loving care that Pastor George shares with our ORLC family!

Doris Grohnke, Cathedral Choir Director and Carol Kreps, Choir Pianist have retired

from their positions and we will be asking the Lord to “raise up” replacements for them.

Both Doris & Carol have faithfully and humbly served us so well. We Give Thanks to God

for them!

Emily Wolf, DCE will remain as our DCE…kind of. While the smiling face will remain, her

name will change to Emily Sagissor on July 21st! Emily continues to be a rich blessing of

God to our staff!

Office Personnel: Cindy Sprouls is our part time (at times working full time hours) Parish

Worker. She is here full days on Tuesday & Thursday, every other Friday, and a variety of

evening & weekend times. Becky Brockberg and Gina Strand have been awesome

volunteers, helping to fill in the gaps when Cindy is not here. We are blessed to have all

three of these ladies!

So, whom have I left out?

Gwen Bolster as Special Education Director and Mike Cossette as custodian; both who

faithfully & regularly carry out their duties and responsibilities and for whom we are

very thankful!

We are richly blessed with our Organist Trio of Sue Johnson, Holly Holt, & Kara Ellefson.

Many churches would be thrilled to have just one organist – we are blessed to have 3

very gifted, reliable, & dedicated ladies who serve us so well.

In the CCC, Cheryl Biby, has been with us for 19 years but as of January of this year

began serving as the Center Director. She is working hard at making a challenging

adjustment in her career responsibilities and we value her faithfulness.

Take the time to verbally or in notes or e-mails recognize and Give Thanks to God for

ALL of the above servants of God who faithfully serve Christ and us.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is hard to believe that 7 ½ years ago God had a place for me on staff at ORLC as a “new” Director of Christian Outreach…not only new to me but also to the church. I didn’t know exactly what I would do or where we would be heading, but through much prayer and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God has opened the doors and led us to places I believe He wanted us to go. Thank you for your prayers and support in all we have done together. My goal was to provide opportunities for everyone to grow in their faith walk with the Lord, leading us to look out beyond the walls of our church, into the community and the world around us. Through all we did, I pray, we have discovered His purpose for you/ us and enabled you/us to do His will. It is my prayer that you have grown in your faith walk.

When we look back on life, we can see God’s hand and His timing. We can see how He has shaped and molded us to accomplish His purpose. Trusting His timing, I believe it is the right time for me to retire, effective mid-July. What and where He is leading I do not know exactly. Since we do not plan to move out of Moorhead, I will continue to work as a volunteer with the Connection Ministry which involves the New Member Ministry and the SHAPE Ministry.

Some highlights for me while serving as DCO…. It was exciting and fun to see The ABLAZE Event fall into place when people came on board getting involved both planning and executing the plan that got the whole congregation into seven weeks of worship, devotion, and small group Bible study that led us to see, in part, God’s mission for us. My prayer is that you grew through that experience and that it had lasting value.

In The Truth Project many people were involved in the small group studies, learning God’s Truth in His Word and discovering His purpose for their lives…again having lasting value.

The Community Outreach Events… “Beverly Yanke’s presentations and “ Keep Your Pants On” were a few of our gifts to the community to provide a meaningful learning experience from a Christian perspective, which could have lasting value.

The Prayer Canvasses, Battery Give Away, the Friendship Sundays, all contributed to showing love to our neighbors. Reaching out beyond our walls, sharing your love with and for people, was also shown in the Habitat for Humanity Build, the Impact Red River Valley Event, and as hosts for the Homeless Emergency Shelter so many of you participated in.

For all of this and so much more, I give thanks and praise to God! It has been my privilege and God has blessed me in serving as DCO for ORLC! I have enjoyed all of it! Thank you for your friendship and the joy of working with you. May God continue to grow us as we work together to accomplish the purposes for which He has called each of us.

Happy summer to everyone. The Lord is great. School is out, let the summer begin. We here at the CCC are ready to begin our summer programs. Longer play time outside, sprinkler and water days, finding insects and worms, growing vegetables and flowers. So much to do, so little time to do it in. This summer, at devotions, the CCC children will be talking and learning about some of the Old Testament Bible stories. We have an opening devotion on Monday mornings downstairs and Wednesday Chapel time upstairs. We are very blessed to be able to offer these Christian learning opportunities to our childcare families. The cribs that we have spent so much time talking about are finally here and being put to good use. Thank you once again for your generous support of this necessary project. Thanks again to JCPenny for giving us a discounted price and helping with the ordering process. Speaking of projects, we have another one underway and hopefully will see progress early this summer. The Courtyard area or Toddler playground, as we call it is going to receive a bit of a face lift. Watch for details. We do have a few openings for infants, young toddlers and school agers. If you know anyone that is looking for childcare, please feel free to refer them to ORCCC 233-8270. We have a wonderful, caring staff and a great facility. The preschool is taking registrations for the fall. We still have a few openings. If you or someone you know is looking for a preschool program to help prepare children for Kindergarten, ORCCC has a great program that focuses on school readiness skills in a Christian environment. Applications are available for anyone interested. It always amazes me that the children now learn in Kindergarten what they used to learn in 1st grade. We continue to collect Campbell’s Soup labels. Pease save the UPC portion of the label. We can redeem these for many different kinds of items, especially outside play items. We are also saving Cash Wise Labels for Learning. These we can redeem for money back from the store. There is an envelope downstairs on one of the bulletin boards in which to place them and a basket in the usher area before entering the church worship area. Have a safe and blessed summer! Partnership for Food Safety Administration has many great resources to help you keep food safe and prevent food borne illness as you shop for groceries, prepare meals, and store leftovers. Foodborne illness is much more than the “stomach flu”, and it is a serious health issue and economic burden for consumers. According to the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the USDA, each year $6.9 billion in costs are associated with five bacterial pathogens, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli O157:H7, and E. coli non-O157:H7 STEC (2000). These costs are associated with medical expenses, lost productivity, and even death. The following information has been gathered from www.fightbac.org. Check out the website for great tools and more information. SHOPPING When shopping, put meat, poultry and fish in separate plastic bags. This will help prevent the juices from leaking out and contaminating your reusable bags and your food. Cross-contamination is how bacteria can be spread. When handling raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs, keep these foods and their juices away from ready-to-eat foods. FOOD PREPARATION Before preparing fruits and vegetables, wash your hands with warm water and soap and use hot water and soap to clean your cutting board, countertop and utensils. Thoroughly rinse fresh produce under running tap water, including those with skins and rinds that are not eaten. Packaged fruits and vegetables labeled “ready to eat”, “washed” or triple washed” need not be washed. Never use detergent or bleach to wash fresh fruits or vegetables. These products are not intended for consumption. Rub firm-skin fruits and vegetables under running tap water or scrub with a clean vegetable brush while rinsing with running tap water. Separate raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs from other foods in your grocery shopping cart, grocery bags and in your refrigerator. Use one cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry and seafood. Never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. Refrigerate foods quickly because cold temperatures slow the growth of harmful bacteria. Do not over-stuff the refrigerator. Cold air must circulate to help keep food safe. Keeping a constant refrigerator temperature of 40°F or below is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. The freezer temperature should be 0°F or below. Refrigerate or freeze meat, poultry, eggs and other perishables as soon as you get them home from the store. Never let raw meat, poultry, eggs, cooked food or cut fresh fruits or vegetables sit at room temperature more than two hours before putting them in the refrigerator or freezer (one hour when the temperature is above 90°F). Never defrost food at room temperature. Food must be kept at a safe temperature during thawing. There are three safe ways to defrost food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave. Food thawed in cold water or in the microwave should be cooked immediately. Always marinate food in the refrigerator. Divide large amounts of leftovers into shallow containers for quicker cooling in the refrigerator.

I am happy to say that all of April’s bills were able to be paid in April. Due to there being five Sundays in April instead of the usual four, contributions for April actually exceeded budgeted expense by $3,590.80. Contributions exceeded actual expense by $9,791.32. As we move into summer and schedules get busy, and lake cabins need attention, please keep in mind we offer electronic contribution options.

MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT (Page 2) GRILLING (www.fsis.usda.gov) Cook food to a safe minimum internal temperature to destroy harmful bacteria. Meat and poultry cooked on a grill often browns very fast on the outside. Use a food thermometer to be sure the food has reached a safe minimum internal temperature. Cook all raw beef, pork, lamb and veal steaks, chops, and roasts to a minimum internal temperature of 145 °F as measured with a food thermometer before removing meat from the heat source. For safety and quality, allow meat to rest for at least three minutes before carving or consuming. For reasons of personal preference, consumers may choose to cook meat to higher temperatures. Cook all raw ground beef, pork, lamb, and veal to an internal temperature of 160 °F as measured with a food thermometer. Cook all poultry to a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F as measured with a food thermometer. NEVER partially grill meat or poultry and finish cooking later. Keep hot food hot. After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served — at 140 °F or warmer. Keep cooked meats hot by setting them to the side of the grill rack, not directly over the coals where they could overcook. At home, the cooked meat can be kept hot in an oven set at approximately 200 °F, in a chafing dish or slow cooker, or on a warming tray. SERVING THE FOOD When taking food off the grill, use a clean platter. Don't put cooked food on the same platter that held raw meat or poultry. Any harmful bacteria present in the raw meat juices could contaminate safely cooked food. In hot weather (above 90 °F), food should never sit out for more than 1 hour. LEFTOVERS Temperature and time cause bacteria to grow which is why it is so important your refrigerator be cold enough and you not keep leftovers too long.There is a limit to how long food can be safely kept. Leftovers should be discarded within 3 to 4 days. Temperatures between 40° F and 140° F allow bacteria to grow rapidly. Refrigerate cooked leftovers promptly - within 2 hours; 1 hour when the temperatures are over 90° F. Use an appliance thermometer to ensure that your refrigerator is at 40° F or below. Recently a Funeral Pall was made by Carolyn Lichtsinn. It is given in memory of Dorothy Dreier, Gwen Noennig’s mother. What is it and how is it used? See the explanation below. Do families have to use it? Certainly not. It is a family choice that will be offered to families at the time of planning a funeral. It does save the cost of a casket spray of flowers. Some families of former military personnel want the casket covered with the flag which too is a good choice. Each family will have the opportunity to decide what their preference is for the casket of their loved one. About the Funeral Pall… The Funeral Pall is a large beautifully embroidered cloth the family places on the casket in place of the flowers just before entering the Sanctuary for the funeral service. Remembering that “those who belong to Christ have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires,” the apostle Paul goes on in Galatians to tell us that “you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Therefore, the Funeral Pall reminds all mourners of the wonderful gifts God has Given us in Baptism and all believers are now robed in the righteousness of Christ. The Cross on the pall calls into remembrance the words of St. Peter in First Peter 1: 18 – 19, “for you know that…you were redeemed…with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect.”

“Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection.” Romans 6: 3 - 5

Begin building a relationship with this new neighbor. Directions for using the bags are included as well as suggestions for you to become a friend. (Remember to remove the instructions before giving it away). Invite them to ORLC if they need a church home.

Thank you choir members for all the years you have been with me as Choir director. I have loved and enjoyed those years so much – all the new music we have gone through, Christmas, Easter, Lent to name a few. All have been a joy. I will miss those times. You have been a faithful group. I thank and praise God for all those years and also you as faithful choir members. I pray the Lord will open my eyes to new opportunities where I can serve Him. An update from Lynne Barnum I started Water Therapy the beginning of March. After three weeks, the skin on my leg started to break down. We’re guessing it was from the chlorine. A week later I began regular therapy again. Slow moving, but that is the magic word, moving. God has me blessed again and my leg has begun to move. As of this writing, my leg straightened to 42 degrees. (Before my leg froze up at the beginning of November, I was at 15 degrees.) Straight is 0 degrees. Still a long ways to go but at least there is movement. Pain control is still doing wonderful. Last week I was able to go to choir practice and sing with the choir on Sunday. How? I had to be inventive, I went up on my behind and down on my behind. My arms are strong enough now so I was able to not only make it up the stairs but also into a chair. I have been learning to walk on crutches, but the advice is never to walk without my gate belt and someone beside me. I can handle that - I sure don't want to fall again. As soon as I am more confident on the crutches and learn a few more things (like stairs, doors, etc.), I will be off and walking. As soon as my leg is a little straighter, I will be able to use it for balance and that will make things a lot easier. Another milestone - I now have feeling in my leg and it has begun in my foot. The laundry on the main floor is done. Thanks to Bill Lymburner for doing the installation. This is so wonderful. (I know there has to be a stronger word, but wonderful is the only one in the English language.) Jim is ready to give up the job and I am ready to take it over. Thank you all again!! Thank you for your prayers and your messages of hope. They all help so much for me to keep a positive attitude. However, I know that I have to give all credit to Christ who strengthens me. Lynne

Lutheran Island Camp 60th Anniversary June 22nd – 24th , 2012

Over 60 years ago a group of dedicated pastors and laypeople came together around an idea and a vision that having a children’s camp for the people of the Minnesota District was important for the youth, congregations, and families of the district. That vision caught hold, especially in the western and northwestern part of the state. The Park Region and later the Lake Region conferences embraced the concept and the 67 acre island in the middle East Battle Lake was purchased on a contract for deed. That was the beginning of the journey. It took several years to build up the causeway, build cabins, establish roads, define recreation areas, and clean out a beach area. By 1952, the first campers headed across the causeway to a weeklong event that, in many cases, changed their lives. At that time there were 10 cabins, 5 in each village and the foundations were laid for a third village which was never built. It is easy to focus on land, buildings, facilities and amenities, but the mission of Lutheran Island Camp has been, and will continue to be, focused on supporting the work of the congregations it serves. God’s blessings on Lutheran Island Camp have multiplied many fold over the last 60 years. He has blessed us with gifts, prayers answered, improvements, volunteers, and growth in facilities and programs. Lutheran Island Camp has also been blessed with many of the same challenges that face congregations and the church at large. We anticipate the future prayerfully. God has blessed us through His people many times in the past 60 years. Today is no different. We pray that He will lead you to provide the resources in volunteer time, gifts, and planned gifts to help the camp move forward with the next 60 years. We plan to add an elevator, a link between buildings, a new kitchen, and dining hall in the next couple of years. Your gift of $60, $600, $6,000 or pledge of $60,000 will help us accomplish many things in the next 2 – 3 years. On the weekend of June 22 – 24, Lutheran Island Camp will celebrate its 60th anniversary of camping. Your whole family is invited. We will have great worship opportunities, picnics and barbecues, a fun run and a 5K run, and lots of other activities including swimming, pontoon rides, inflatables, fishing, and lots of time to visit. Be sure to call ahead to let the camp know you are coming.

To the dear, kind congregation at Our Redeemer! I have been searching my heart & brain to find words that could express the gratitude I have in my heart for you all! Playing for your choir was a privilege and a blessing for me! I treasure the time spent in rehearsal and in your services there. I am truly grateful. You are blessed with a pastor who has such a humble yet honest presentation of salvation and our walk with the Lord. He and his wife Gwen, who is such a true support and helpmate, seem to be truly “called into His service. I am also grateful for the way you use the young people in your services and have families serve in the offering and other parts of your services. That really is wonderful to see. Words just aren’t adequate for the UNBELIEVABLE farewell! It was beyond overwhelming and humbling. I pray with all my heart to deserve such kindness and affirmations. I pray you can feel my heart, for the words just don’t come out as I want them to. I want to serve the Lord and it is always true when He closes one door he opens another. I am trusting Him to know where and how I can serve! I will miss this church very deeply but I intend to watch the services on cable television. That will be a blessing and reminder of these WONDERFUL YEARS AT OUR REDEEMER! There is a verse set to music that I love. It says, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, I don’t want to leave this place…” I do pray His Holy Spirit will guide my every thought and every step I take!! Carol Kreps

Congratulations Graduates! Danny Budd graduated from Moorhead High School. He plans to attend North Dakota State University in the fall. Chris Bunge graduated from Moorhead High School. He plans to enlist in the National Guard. In the fall he will begin at Minnesota State Community and Technical College and study Criminal Justice. Amy Grandbois graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. She is unsure of her plans, but hopes to study either Early Childhood or Social Work. Mari Kjos graduated from Moorhead High School. She plans to attend North Dakota State University in the fall and major in nursing. Josh Mork has been homeschooled for thirteen years. He plans to attend Concordia College in the fall and study history and classical studies with a minor in Greek. Keah Nelson graduated from Moorhead High School. She plans to attend Moorhead Tech, then Moorhead State for early childhood education. She hopes to get her Masters Degree in counseling.

Sean Pollack graduated from Fargo South High School. He plans to attend Minnesota State – Moorhead in the fall. Morgan Tracy graduated from Moorhead High School. She plans to enlist in the Marines. Stephanie Ussatis graduated from Moorhead High School. Brittany Weinzierl graduated from Moorhead High School. She plans to enroll in the Dental Program at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in the fall. Renae (Schmitz) Schanilec graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Spanish and a teaching certificate. She just received a job at Grafton High School teaching Spanish, levels 1-4. John Wychor graduated from Concordia College with a degree in Business Management and a minor in coaching. His current plans are to find a job!
