Yelm Farm and Pet is a family ownedand operated business which comple-ments rather than competes withother local feed stores. The 10,000-square-foot store took about six months to build, and now houses farm supplies and livestock feed, along with general pet necessities.“We want to be that one-stop shopfor anything involving pets and ani-mals, not just livestock,” says owner Tammy Brueske. Brueske, along withher husband, Dave, decided to open the feed store because it was a natu-ral extension of their fence businessthey already owned. ence specialist. “I’m looking forward to working with Rainier’s administrative team and for the opportunity to work with the community,” Garchow said. “Rainier has a tremendous amount of community support.” An avid sports fan, Garchow is excited for the upcoming sports seasons. Southside doesn’t have a competitive sports program, he said. “My wife and I are really looking forward to at-tending the school sporting events,” Garchow said. “We’re the kind of people who will go out there andwear the school colors with pride.” Garchow has experience keeping a close eye on thebudget and is up for the challenge of managing the dwindling enrollment along with cuts to state fund-ing. He said it’s his responsibility to make the best use of taxpayers’ dollars to benefi t the kids. To him, relationships, rigor and relevance are ex-tremely important. “I try to always make decisions based on what’s best for the kids, fi ltered through those three Rs.” He plans to be actively involved in the communityand be a familiar face at as many school events as possible. Plus, interacting with the students both dur-ing and after school is a high priority of his. He said he wants to get to know the kids, bepresent in all the schools and be somebody who the students and staff feel comfortable going to withquestions, concerns or a casual conversation. Garchow and his wife are already looking at places to live in Rainier and hope to move within a year, depending on when their home sells near Shelton. “We’ve spent many Saturday’s drinking lattes anddriving through the Rainier community,” he said.

GARCHOW: Relationships keyContinued from page 3
He left the area and worked for 20 years within the Wahkiakum School District in Kelso, Wash. There heserved as a principal and coach. In 2002, he returned to his hometown as Yelmschools’ chief. “I am extremely fortunate to come back to a com-munity that gave so much to me when I was kid,” Wolf said. “Hopefully I can give back to them.” Wolf said he is especially grateful for the commu-nity, because it has always given a lot to the area’s youth. “This is one of those places where kids come fi rst,” Wolf said. “That’s one of the things I appreciateabout living and working here.” Wolf is a familiar face at district events, both dur-ing and after regular school hours. That involvement is a high priority, he said. One of the biggest challenges as superintendent, just like with most schools in the state, is maintaining the district’s budget, Wolf said. But he said the school board has consistently kept its goals student-centered, so upholding those stan-dards is his ultimate goal. “I want to continue to move education forward in Yelm,” Wolf said. So far, Yelm has been fortunate enough to be ableto make budget cuts starting at the top, rather than affecting student programs, he said. He has concerns for when some of the recovery funds given to the state go away for the 2011-12 school year. “It’s going to be a big challenge for all districts,”he said. “We have to prepare for that and build onour resources so we can hopefully save for a rainyday.”

The word “Yelm” is rooted in the Coastal Salishword “shelm” which means “shimmering heat waves from the sun.”
The Yelm Prairie was originally inhabited by members of the Nisqually Indian Tribe. The fi rst permanent American settlers came to the NisquallyValley in 1853 to join Hudson’s Bay Co. sheep farm-ers who were already in the area.
With the coming of the Northern Pacifi c Rail-road in 1873, Yelm began to prosper, having found an outlet for its agricultural and forestry products. Its economic base was further enhanced in the early1900s when an irrigation company was formed in1916, making Yelm a center for commercial produc-tion of beans, cucumbers, and berries.
Yelm was offi cially incorporated on Dec. 10, 1924.During the Great Depression, the Yelm Irrigation
Co. was bankrupted by high maintenance costs and an unstructured water distribution plan.
Now, Yelm is home to the fi rst Class A Water Rec-
lamation Facility and distribution system in Washing-ton state. This system reclaims all of its waste water to irrigate landscaping at churches, parks, schools and homes. The water also is added to streams and is used to recharge water underground at a city wetland parkthat includes a catch-and-release fi sh pond for rain-bow trout.

Rainier started out as a sawmill town on the Te-nalquot Prairie. It was named in 1884 by offi cials of the Northern Pacifi c Railway, because of its proximityto Mount Rainier.
The area was settled in 1890 by Albert and Marie Gehrke, and in 1891, the town was platted, or laidout, by George Ellsbury, who hailed from the city of Binghampton, New York. Rainier’s main street, Bing-hampton Street, still bares his town’s name.
Rainier was incorporated as a town in 1947, and in 2001, city council members chose to make Rainier afull-fl edged, code city.
Similar to its neighbor city, Yelm, devastating fi res helped shape the cityscape. Fires in the late 1920s, and throughout the 1930s, destroyed mills and town buildings. The last big fi re, in 1974, destroyed the 42-year-old Rainier High School.
Still, some historic buildings remain, such as a de-cades-old pioneer Lutheran church and the original redRainier Grade School. Rainier’s Historical Society is working to refurbish the old school, which now houses
a library, thrift shop, food bank and art gallery.Community-wide events help bring small towns
together, and Rainier is no exception. Besides its an-nual Bluegrass Festival and Round-Up Days, the cityalso supports a community Christmas celebration.

The City of Roy was incorporated in 1908, and isnow a code city with a mayor-council form of govern-ment.
Established as a town in 1908, the City of Roy, located between Spanaway and Yelm on State High-way 507, is best known for three things — the Roy Pioneer Rodeo, the annual Fourth of July Parade, and Silvaseed Co.
Roy’s annual Fourth of July Parade draws ever-growing crowds and more participation each year.
Cowboys and rodeo fans fi ll the town twice a year for the bucking action of the Roy Pioneer Rodeo.
Established in 1903, C. H. Manning opened theManning Seed Co. and shared his planting secrets with only a handful of trusted employees. Today, Sil-vaseed produces six million container trees each year, while the transplant fi elds yield three to four million trees, annually.
The historic old building at the top of the hill in Roy, known as the “old gym,” is now a community activity center, restored by the Association for Roy Youth. With a substantial grant from Pierce Countyand bucket loads of elbow grease, volunteers breathednew life into the historic building for communityevents.
Also, the annual Christmas tree lighting is held near Roy City Hall in December. The salmon home-coming party is held in Roy City Park each Januaryor February to welcome the salmon home to Muck Creek as they make their way to spawning groundsupstream.
