Year 5 Newsletter
Terms 5 & 6
This booklet gives a quick resume of our Teaching and Learning
Programme over the next two terms. There are lots of exciting
events happening across Terms 5 and 6. Here’s a snapshot of
what you can expect.
Year 5 Learning Themes
English: The next two terms include some exciting
themes; analysing ‘The Piano’ which is a short narrative
about an old man who plays a tune, bringing back
memories. We will then move on to analysing the plot and
emotions while delving into the meaningful nature of ‘The
Highwayman’.
Mathematics: The children will be taught objectives from
the New Maths Curriculum. Problem solving will be
embedded in every lesson via using and applying skills.
Year 5 will focus on investigation shape, geometry, ratio
and proportion and using and applying skills. Kung Fu
Timetables will be introduced this term, testing the
children's timetable knowledge - where they can earn
themselves coloured wrist bands, depending on what level they achieve!
Science: Will focus on the properties of materials.
To consider separation of substances using filters
or by evaporation. Which materials will dissolve in a
liquid to form a solution? To consider the proper-
ties of materials for specific purposes. Finally, car-
rying out several investigations to look at present-
ing results.
Music: The children will learn how to play the recorder in Term 5.
PSHE: In our PSHE we will be focussing on the Go Givers syllabus for
Year 5 studying rights and responsibilities.
French: Food glorious food! Looking at French cuisine
including a food tasting session. We shall create menus and
buy food in role play scenarios. The summer is a term for
hobbies and pursuits.
History and Geography Work: We will meander through the
Geographical themes of Rivers from source to sea.
Religious Education: Our main topic will be looking at Judaism
and what makes a good leader.
Year 5 Learning Themes
Physical Education:
Swimming will be on Friday during Term 5. Dali and
Da Vinci Classes will alternate between the 1-3pm time
slots. Please make sure your child has their swimming
kit in school.
Art/DT
Art and DT will be linked to our topics including
making a Mezuzah and representing course of a
river. We shall combine Science and DT by Mak-
ing Year 5 Dragsters with the support of Mrs
French.
ICT
Children will be introduced to Microsoft Excel and be given
the key skills of how to operate the software successfully,
this is part of getting them ready for the working world!
Homework and supporting your child at home:
READING: Continue to hear your child read regularly to benefit
your child’s learning, understanding and enjoyment of reading.
Please use the yellow reading record books to list any reading
achievements and make any comments you wish to share.
SPELLINGS: Children will be given new updated rainbow spellings,
this is self-lead, and the children are responsible for getting them
selves ready and tested at home, then moving up to the next
level.
ENGLISH: English homework will be set and handed out to pupils
on Thursdays. Wherever possible, the tasks will be linked to work
which has been taught in class. Please return by the following
Monday.
MATHS: Maths homework will be set using MyMaths.com and will
be set for the pupils on Thursdays. The tasks will reflect the
topics covered in class. Please ensure tasks are completed by the
following Monday. An optional homework will be given on
Monday to be returned on Friday using and applying the topics
covered.
