Educate about What is Normal

• How labor normally begins and progresses

• Realistic reassuring info on emotional ups and

downs

• How women respond, how partners, doulas support

them

• The normal sounds and behaviors of women in labor

• Audiovisuals, discussion

• Demonstration & Rehearsal of techniques for

comfort & labor progress

• Discussion of elective/ routine and indicated

interventions and their effects.

How to Best Discuss Interventions

• Problems with BRA, BRAN, BRAIN, etc.

• We need to start with AWWWWWW – Ask

Why? What’s Wrong? When? With What?

• Then Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, etc.

• This assumes

• There’s time for discussion

• The caregiver is okay with being questioned

• There are options available (Institutional protocols are

not rigid)

• Why does an informed public matter?

Price of Ignorance Today, there are few checks and balances against high use of surgery, technology and medicine, for example:

• 30+% cesarean rate • 23% induction (2013 birth certificate stat) • 9.6% preterm birth • Worst maternal death rate in developed countries -

1:1,800 (33rd of 179 countries) • Infant mortality – 6-9/1,000 • Less than 10% VBACs • 25-34% incidence of traumatic births; 5-9% PTSD* When parents have knowledge, they seek care that reflects their preferences for family--centered and flexible care.
