There were no plantations in Georgia before 1750. What was the Virginia Company and why was it important?

Virginia, one of the earliest British colonies, began the settlement Jamestown in 1607. The Virginia Company of London started Jamestown as a trading post. The colonists began growing tobacco as a cash crop (a crop that people raise to sell to others rather than to use themselves). The Virginia Company sold tobacco all over Europe and made HUGE profits. Smoking tobacco became so popular that the company did well for a time.
