3 Simple techniques to deal with a bad dayTRANSCRIPT
WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO
ME?
What do you do if you had a really bad day? Or when someone says no to you? If they said, “Look, we really like you, but we don’t like your product-don’t come around here again,” you would probably spend the rest of the day feeling defeated.
Sales people have to learn to deal with
rejection all the time and what you say to
yourself, with your inner “self talk” in the
first minute is very critical.
It’s the reason why people seem to keep repeating
unsuccessful results, have a poor sense of self
worth and never ever seem fulfilled in whatever
they do. Mastering that “little voice” in your head
is absolutely essential.
Don’t attribute the problem to yourself
It’s hard not to take rejection personally and our natural tendency is to say to
ourselves, “There’s something wrong with me,” or “I’m not cut out for this,” or “I
knew this wasn’t going to work.”
If you start hearing these thoughts in your head, say, “STOP!” enough times that you stop seeing it that way. Even if it IS true, you need to start managing your inner voice and the way to start doing that is to attribute the problem to other sources FIRST instead of yourself.
Don’t attribute the problem to yourself
Something that can help to rephrase your
“self talk” is to say, “Obviously, I was not
aware of the other circumstances or other products that they were looking at so, while I’m responsible, it’s not all
because of me.”
Don’t attribute the problem to yourself
Don’t let the past determine your future
When we face a bad situation at work or at a sales meeting, we tend to say to ourselves, “The rest of my day is ruined,” or “My whole week is going to end up like this.”
You have to turn it around and isolate the incident. Don’t allow it to become protracted beyond
that moment.
Don’t let the past determine your future
Say to yourself, “This is over and
done with,” or “This was an
isolated incident,” or “This is a new
day.”
Don’t let the past determine your future
Don’t allow the problem to be global
The number of times bad things happen to you is a very small fraction of the total number of incidences in your life. If it was happening to you all the time, it would be happening 5 to 10 times a day!
So the next time you start feeling like the
world is against you, remember, tell your
inner voice to “STOP!” and turn it around by
isolating the incident.
Don’t allow the problem to be global
Say something like, “Obviously, I had a tough time with this call, but I still have great relationships. This doesn’t happen all the time.”
Don’t allow the problem to be global
When you are first practicing these techniques, say them out loud. They will
have more impact. Some people may think you’re crazy, but that’s okay.
Once you’ve developed the skills, the rest is in your head! It may be easier said than done, but with enough practice, you will learn to not only manage but master that
inner voice of yours.
