  • Goals are a desired results, purpose, or objective that one strives to attain.

    What are Goals

  • Why Goals Work?Motivate and drive yourselfMaintain focus and keep you in controlIncrease self-confidenceGoals serve as a directive function - create paths to successSense of fulfillment and self-worthFacilitate commitment goals commit people to behaviourEnhance determinism goals have an energising function

  • What We Know About Goals

Fulfill needs or desireShould be moderately difficult need effort and time commitment Specific characteristics Require an action plan within a time frame

  • According to psychologists Jane B. Burkea and Lenora M. Yuen, it is helpful to define your goals in behavioral terms; make each goal an action or behaviour you can carry out. Take time to write out your goals now. Separate them into three categories: 1. Short term2. Medium term 3. Long term

  • Examples: Short-term goal (To pass the class test next week)

Medium-term goal (To pass all the subjects in Mid-Year Examinations)

Long-term goal(To get at least 2 distinctions in the National Examinations)

  • SMART GoalsWhen setting goals, ensure that the goals are SMART: - Specific- Measurable- Attainable / Achievable- Relevant / Realistic- Time-Oriented

  • Specific GoalsThe more specific the goal, the more likely it will be achieved. So instead of telling yourself "I'll do some statistics tonight" try "I'll do 3 problems on page 48 of statistics tonight between 7:00 - 8:00 pm".

  • Measurable GoalsThis helps you to keep track of your progress (monitoring). So use numbers and times. For example, I will do 3 statistics problems this evening. If you only do one, you didn't reach your goal and you may need to change your approach.

  • Attainable/Achievable GoalsIt is important that your goals are realistic and they can be achieved with your resources that you have . Do not be too ambitious but the goals cannot be too trivial as well.

  • Realistic / Relevant GoalsIn order to achieve your eventual goals you need the relevant sub-goals and correct resources. No use in carrying out activities that are not useful. Be realistic when setting goals.

  • Time-based GoalsWe tend to use deadlines to create pressure. Make realistic time frames for your work. Building realistic commitments and deadlines into your study is good.

  • Setting academic targetsYou need to work hard to achieve your academic targets.

If you succeed in achieving your targets, do not be contented. Aim higher.

If you failed, do not give up. Re-strategise and continue to work on it.
