… after all, it's free!
But wait ... there's more ...
![Page 4: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Some definitions ...
![Page 5: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Commons
![Page 6: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The dictionary
A “Commons” is:
I. A public pasture ground
I. A piece of open land for recreational use in an urban area
![Page 7: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Governments as caretakers of various commons.
![Page 8: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The provisions of licenses like the GPL, and the community development model that they encourage, create a commons for software.
![Page 9: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
an idea at least as old as Aristotle
popularized by Garrett James Hardin, 1915-2003
assumes that the resources of the commons are limited
The Tragedy of the Commons

Open Source & Free Software do not have such limitations.
![Page 11: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Community
![Page 12: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The dictionary
A “Community” is:
I. A body of people having common rights, privileges, or interests, or living in the same place under the same laws and regulations.
II. Of common character, likeness, frequency
![Page 13: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The Internet enabled the formation of a new class of communities that could not previously exist.
People with common interests or values
Potentially broadly geographically distributed
![Page 14: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The inability to participate in the growing society of Internet-enabled communities is a fundamental problem, often called the “digital divide”
![Page 15: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Open Source Software can address this problem.
![Page 16: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The behind Open Source Software
![Page 17: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The basic idea behind open source is very simple:
When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves.
People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs.
There will always be more smart people outside of any organization than the organization could employ.
![Page 18: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
And this can happen at a speed which compared to conventional software development often seems astonishing.
![Page 19: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
![Page 20: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Communities that form around Open Source Softwarefreely share their knowledge with others.
![Page 21: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
If information is free and open, society as a whole will benefit.
People can contribute and share.
![Page 22: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
People grow throughof learning.
![Page 23: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
“Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves.” Aaron Swartz. 1986 - 2013
![Page 24: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Open Source Software provides access to real world examples of how technologies can be implemented. How stuff works (and sometimes not).
![Page 25: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Just some examples ...
![Page 26: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Open Source Software is transparent.
![Page 27: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
If everybody can look inside, there will be no surprises, no suspicion, no concern.
Weaknesses can be identified quickly, which in turn improves security.
![Page 28: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Need a job?
![Page 29: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
As a side effect of people working on Open Source Software, they have something much better than a resume.
They can show real world code as example of their skills.
![Page 30: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
… OK, let's talk about
![Page 31: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Open Source Software enables economic growth.
![Page 32: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Communities which are less funded can thrive because of Open Source Software.
![Page 33: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Instead of spending money outside the community, Open Source Software can enable them to produce needed value inside.
![Page 34: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Develop locally needed solutions, with local resources, generate local taxes and save money.
![Page 35: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
If you can't open it, you don't own it.
![Page 36: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)

As we as society grow more and more reliable on storing documents in electronic formats, we have a responsibility to keep them accessible for future generations.
![Page 38: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Remember? Information needs to be free.
But it has nothing to do with beer.
![Page 39: Why Open Source matters](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58891def1a28ab77528b4923/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Open Source Software and Open Standards provide sustainable open access to your information.
