Types of Patent Applications

Page 5: Why patent?

★ Depending upon the office at which a patent application is filed, that application could either be an application for a patent in a given country, or may be an application for a patent in a range of countries. The former is known as national (patent)

applications, and the latter as regional (patent) applications.

★ A patent application filed under the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) is called an international application, or PCT application. PCT is operated by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and provides a centralized application process, but patents are not granted under the treaty.

How much do you know about three types?

Do you know how powerful patent is?

★ Patents prohibit anyone other than the patent holder from making or selling the patented item (or using the business method, or planting the new plant, in the case of those patent types) without the permission of the patent holder. Namely, by preventing others from distributing, selling, or manufacturing your invention, you patent holders preserve the right to earn profits from the invention.
