Definitions (1) The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a good
definition of UX stating that:
"User experience (UX) refers to the quality of the user's interaction with and perceptions of a system” …. Think about that …. it has very BROAD implications
The same organization also states: “User experience (UX) focuses on having a deep understanding of users, what they need, what they value, their abilities, and also their limitations. It also takes into account the business goals and objectives of the group managing the project”
http://www.usability.gov/
Definitions (2) There is an ISO standard definition
But usability.gov states usability is – “How effectively, efficiently and satisfactorily a user can interact with a user interface.”
Can be measured by – M.E.E.L.S.
Memorability
Efficiency
Errors
Learnability and
Satisfaction
SO YOU CAN BUILD IT IN, MEASURE IT AND TEST FOR IT !!!
So … after my medical career …..
I trained in systems analysis, design and programming
I worked as a programmer
I’ve built systems
I’ve researched and published about them,
I’ve implemented systems
I manage health IT systems every day
I LOVE health IT !!!
I want health IT to SUCCEED .. to make healthcare better for patients and HCP’s
BUT …Houston … we have a problem (1) ….. Electronic Health Record
Use a Bitter Pill for Many Physicians (US) – 2016 !!!
qualitative multiple-case study
office - based clinician practices
16 practices (23 responded initially)
12 complete or partial adopters (4 non adopter practices)
BUT ….Houston … we have a problem (2) …..
Participants in this study described concerns with system costs, workflow disruption, reduced productivity, and usability of the systems as the primary obstacles
92 % of EHR users - decreased efficiency because of EHR adoption…… …….Increased administrative workload for the Dr, workflow disruption, the need to develop workarounds ……. (some increased efficiency too)
Does that sound like a positive UX for these users ?
What usability engineering and testing was undertaken prior to implementing these products ?
Were the results of these tests made available to the purchasers prior to committing to the systems ?

Second half …. What to do ? Mr Bernard Schokman – originally spent more than 10 years
working with a variety of programming languages; he transitioned from development to software testing then led development and business analyst teams on large transformation projects.
The transition into UX came while on a three-year secondment as a Business Analyst, when asked to support a large BA team with designs for a range of different software systems. Bernard now runs his own company that specialises in UX and training people to deliver it
Mr Grahame Grieve – also known as “the Father of FHIR”; Principal at Health Intersections Pty Ltd. Originally a lab scientist, has worked in technical areas of health IT for many years. Has had a long involvement in the standards community including as a HL7 -Working Group Co-Chair

So …
We are wanting participants to walk away with a much greater appreciation of exactly of what usability and UX are; and what specific problems are caused by poor usability and
UX.
Will you ?
We want to supply users with knowledge to better equip them with a vision for improved system usability and better
user experiences
Did we ?
Thank – you to our speakers
