DELIVERY AND ASSESSMENT METHODS

ENGLISH

The English for General Purposes course focuses on everyday functional English and facilitates learner understanding of the language, communication and conventions used in an English-speaking country. The course aims to provide students with a learning environment that is as close as possible to common everyday situations in Australia and is also designed around common student-based requirements.

AHMI offers six levels of English for General Purposes – Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Intermediate to Advanced courses are particularly suited to the needs of students who possess a moderate English proficiency level, have previously studied English and now wish to extend their English proficiency to a more advanced level.

Many students progress to further education courses when they finish their English language studies. To meet these needs, students are exposed to a range of listening, reading, writing and speaking activities. Exposure to a range of different writing tasks, for example, helps students practise the different forms of writing that they would be expected to use when taking future courses of study.

GETTING AROUND

Canberra, the national capital of Australia, is located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Situated on the ancient lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people, Canberra’s name is thought to mean ‘meeting place’.

The city is:• Home to 380,000 residents• Recognised as one of the best planned cities in the world• Canberra is ranked the best city in the world to live, by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation

and Development (OECD) in 2014The high-quality education offered, together with the convenience of a modern city and pristine natural

environment, as well as access to some of the country’s top attractions, means students can experience a healthy and safe place to concentrate on their studies.

Canberra has an excellent public bus system servicing the entire ACT. AHMI College students enjoy discounts and also have a comprehensive

choice of routes, including one that stops directly in front of the College. On top Taxis are available throughout the city, and Trains-Country Link has three services
