ZYP COATINGS EXPLAINED

Page 2: Why Use A Paintable Refractory Coating? -- The Benefits of ZYP Coatings

WHAT IS A COATING?

“A coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. The purpose of applying the coating may be decorative, functional, or both.”

“Functional coatings may be applied to change the surface properties of the substrate, such as adhesion, wettability, corrosion resistance, or wear resistance.“

-Excerpts from Wikipedia  ZYP Coatings are FUNCTIONAL COATINGS … paintable refractory

coatings that are applied like housepaints … but, after applying and drying, they are used at high-temperatures, typically over 500 C.

HOW DO PAINTABLE REFRACTORY COATINGS DIFFER FROM OTHERS?

Paintable Refractory Coatings are applied like house paint yet, after drying, are used at high-temperatures – typically over 500 C; are 40-60% dense. Much more economical than other coatings. Much more ‘forgiving’ with thermal expansion mismatch of coating-substrate.

Chemically Vapor Deposited (CVD) refractory coatings are applied as fully dense layers. Matching expansion of coating-substrate is important.

Thermal Spraying (Flame, Plasma, etc.) refractory coatings typically lead to 80-95% dense coatings. Matching expansion of coating-substrate is important.

BENEFITS OF USING A PAINTABLE REFRACTORY COATING

Longer refractory life Lower maintenance of refractory and tooling Shorter downtime Reduced scrap Improved productivity Higher profit

ZYP Coatings modify the surface, typically making it non-wetted and non-reacted with molten materials, thus yielding:

WHAT IS INSIDE A PAINTABLE REFRACTORY COATING?

Refractory Active Ingredient powder - the main “filler”

Binder/Suspender – to keep the powder in suspension and to bind it to the substrate when the coating is applied and at its use-temperature.

Liquid “vehicle” or “carrier” – to allow the coating to be applied at ambient temperature, after which it is removed by evaporation

ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN A COATING

The Active Ingredient is the solid refractory powder that is within the coating

It should be inert to what it is desired to contact at the use-temperature

Many of our coatings use Boron Nitride as the active ingredient --due to its inertness, non-wetting/nonstick properties.

Hexagonal boron nitride has a plate-like structure like graphite

BINDER/SUSPENDER

The Binder/Suspender is the “glue” that holds everything together.

It provides adherence to the substrate, initial

paintability as well as hardness/toughness of the coating as-applied as well as at the use-temperature.

It also provides (in addition to the active ingredient) resistance to corrosion from chemical attack and erosion, such as from “flow” or turbulence.

Examples include organic and inorganic binder/suspender materials.

VEHICLE OR CARRIER

The liquid “Vehicle” or “Carrier” is a solvent or system of solvents.

It makes a coating paintable.

It “carries” the solids portion of the coating to the substrate, while allowing the Binder/Suspender to be contained within it.

It evaporates and gets away from the applied/dried coating to leave a uniform layer of materials designed to go to the use-temperature.

Examples are: • Water• Alcohol/Acetone• Oils

DILUTION OF COATINGS Our coatings are generally all right to use “as is” without dilution, whether

applied by brushing, dipping, or air-spraying – i.e., just like housepaint.

However, dilution is sometimes done in order to apply thinner layers or to increase the coverage

When diluting, 1:1, 2:1, and even up to 3:1 dilutions can be done with many coatings.

Note: a 2:1 dilution means 2 parts of WATER to 1 part of PAINT

BORON NITRIDE COATINGS

Why do we use Boron Nitride as an active ingredient in many of our Mainline coatings?

BN has unique properties – High Lubricity, Non-wetting, Non-stick at cryogenic temperatures to 1000 C or higher High Thermal Conductivity High Electrical Resistivity and Dielectric Strength High Chemical Resistance and Inertness to molten metals, glasses, drosses, slags, salts

BN is an excellent release agent for molten aluminum, magnesium, zinc, and other nonferrous as well as ferrous metals and alloys, and also for art-glass slumping and weld/braze stop-off areas.

KEY PROPERTIES OF ZYP BORON NITRIDE

ZYP makes its own ultra-high-purity Boron Nitride powder especially designed for use in its coatings:

o Unique continuous process provides much more uniform product than batch processeso Cosmetic grade purity (>99.99% BN)o Tightly controlled particle size and crystallinity

ZYP Coatings’ Boron Nitride is the best available. All BN is Not the Same!
