What is Selective Service?
• U.S. law states that every man must register with Selective Service when he turns 18.
• That way, if there was ever a national emergency, and Congress created a draft, it would be more fair and effective than in the past.
• Basically, it’s a low cost insurance policy for our country.

What are Selective Service Civilian Boards?

• Selective Service Civilian Boards are made up of volunteers all across the country.
• In case of a draft, Selective Service Boards are trained to make fair and equal decisions about which young men in their community are eligible to receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service.
Represent your community
• Local board members should reflect the ethnic, cultural, and economic demographics of their community.

Why join?
• Make sure the young men in your community are treated fairly.
• Make sure your country is prepared.
• Get to know the other board members in your community.

Who’s eligible to join?
• You must be 18 years or older• You must be a U.S. citizen.• If you are a man, you must have registered with Selective Service.
• You may NOT be an employee of any law enforcement organization.
• You may NOT be an active or retired member of the armed forces. • You must NOT have been convicted of any criminal offense.

What happens if you join?
• You will serve in the community you live in.• You can serve for up to 20 years.• You will receive no compensation for your
service. • You will be trained in Selective Service laws,
regulations, and procedures to help you make fair and equitable decisions.

How do you apply?
• Go to www.SSS.gov and click on the board members application.
• If there’s a spot on your local board, you will be interviewed by Selective Service.
