The application provides more than 2,300 airline employees with access to crew rosters, passenger information, air traffic control notices, safety notices, updated destination details and duty free sales information using a Wi-Fi network in the airport crew rooms prior to take-off. As a result of this deployment, Britannia Airways has saved £500,000 per year by automating a total of fifty paper-based workflow processes
Harvard Medical School Business WiFi
Using M-Business Server from iAnywhere, partner ArcStream Solutions developed a wireless Web-based application that delivers medical texts, lecture notes, class schedules and course surveys via handheld devices. Now, more than 1,000 medical students and faculty have high-speed wireless access through campus hotspots as well as local information access when they are off campus. Harvard Medical has saved nearly $500,000 to date through reduced administration costs and fewer paper-based processes
Hyundai Department Store Business WiFi
Hyundai Department Store offers a sophisticated, high-end shopping experience to consumers in South Korea. The company’s new wireless point-of-sale (POS) application embeds SQL Anywhere and enables sales clerks to process a purchase from anywhere in the store using a handheld device. As a result, shoppers no longer have to wait in long lines at cash registers and tend to shop longer at the stores, often purchasing more products and services. In addition, Hyundai has realized a 40 percent reduction in total POS hardware costs and a 30 percent reduction in administrative costs.
Sacred Heart Health System Business WiFi
Medical staff at Sacred Heart Health System’s hospitals in Florida now have immediate access to patient information, lab work, X-rays and other test results using a wireless application developed by Cogon Systems. The solution leverages SQL Anywhere to provide seamless access to critical information that is stored in multiple hospital information systems. Wireless LANs set up in the hospitals provide physicians, nurses and staff with the information they need, when they need it. The mobile deployment has resulted in a 15 percent reduction in the time spent tracking patient information
City of Helsinki Business WiFi
The City of Helsinki implemented Thalia WiFi solution in a care district with 1 500 home nurses and home help providers who make 1,8 million house call annually.
Training took a half-day per user.
Helsinki has already verified a 30-35 percent improvement of productivity.
Previously, nurses spent up to 50 percent of their time at the office collecting and entering patient information in back-end systems.
With Thalia, the application they use is stored on a handheld computer and the nurses and home help staff use their cellular telephones to get and send data.

WPAN Applications
For business applications, anytime you would use a cradle for a network connection, a WPAN can work
SQL Anywhere Studio can synchronize data wireless over WPAN networks without modifying the application!
In some confined environments, Bluetooth can be used as a local area network (using signal boosters)
Future uses include many embedded devices such as sensors, interactive toys, smart badges, and home automation
Local Area Networks
Main Characteristics: Mid-range communication (typically under 100 m) Data rates from 1 Mbps to 54 Mbps Low cost (no airtime fees!) Huge growth in 2002/2003 (and expected in 2004) Confusion over which specification to use
