IntroductionA B O U T

Hello, and thanks for purchasing my first ever ebook! I am Tabitha, a freelance graphic designer, wife and a mother of 2 little boys. If you are wondering how a graphic designer got into making

her own natural skincare products, this is the story of how it all started and lead to the creation

of this ebook.

A few months before falling pregnant

with my first son, I experienced an early miscarriage. So when I fell pregnant again, I become paranoid and over careful about everything, including cleaning products and cosmetic chemicals. In the early months I would open all the windows and face away when cleaning, and I avoided painting my nails, dying my hair, or using acne creams. This developed into an interest in finding more natural alternatives to beauty products and cleaning. I was amazed just how many chemicals our in our lives everyday.

It is now a medically recognized fact that our body absorbs significant amounts of the toxic chemicals that we put on our skin. This build up of chemicals can lead to cancers, disease, birth defects and other problems. Basically, it just isn’t good for us to keep smoothing ourselves in chemicals all the time!

After my son was born, I was mindful of what food and products where going into and onto my son’s body, as well as my own. But it wasn’t till I began researching

‘slow living’ that I also stumbled upon more and more info about all the chemicals in everyday products, and how it was actually fairly easy to create your own natural alternatives. I started making my own cleaning products and skin care products, and quickly found a joy in making these things myself and knowing exactly what was in them.

I had (and still am) been working as a freelance graphic designer, but with a busy toddler, who doesn’t sleep much,

and loves to hit my keyboard (or demand to watch cat videos on you tube) when I try to work, I was finding it rather hard to get very much work done. But I was finding when I made my own products, it was easy to do with him, I could work in the kitchen, and be on the go, attending to him, while whipping things up. This sparked the idea to start making natural skin products to sell.

After many weeks of prep work, designing packaging, setting up listing and making products, the day before launching my business, I discovered I was pregnant again. This meant that the business would have to cease or be put on hold once the baby was born (for my sanity and due to maternity pay rules.) I still put my all into it, made lots of sales, built a customer base, made wholesale orders and learnt a lot. But as my pregnancy progressed and I began to think what I would do once the baby was born.

I found making a wide range of products (on my own not on large scale) was not really cost effective, as I was buying a wide range of supplies, so I decided to look at what sold the best and would re-launch with a new and improved line based on my research and what I think will be profitable as a business. But I still want to help others get natural with all there beauty and skin care needs, not just a limited range, so I decided to write this e-book, so that you can make your own skincare at home!

The name is inspired by the fact, my driving

force for making these products, is to provide

better alternatives for my family, so that we

are healthier and our bodies are happier.

It’s inspired by that motherly instinct to

protect my child. To nourish with good food

nurture and bring him up with care and

attention, and protect him from the bad things

that can harm and pollute his growing body.

NOURISH AND NURTURE The Healthy, Natural Skincare Guide

Have you ever read the ingredients list on the

back of your skincare products?

See lots of un-pronouncable ingredients and just assume, it must be fine, they test these products and they are fit for sale. Naively, we are smothering our bodies in toxic chemicals on a daily basis. And what goes on our skin is absorbed into our bodies, going through the skin directly into the bloodstream, cells, and other organs. While the cosmetic companies may tell us, they are safe in low quantities, they do not account for the fact we use these products daily and in conjunction with many other chemical filled products, making a chemical cocktail inside our bodies. Even many products labeled ‘natural’ still contain toxic ingredients, as the word ‘natural’ is not well regulated. And nearly all products contain ‘fragrances’ which are unspecified, and many have the ability to cross the placental barrier during pregnancy, causing birth defects and DNA damage.

Tests for a hundred hazardous substances have revealed that, on average, we each harbor 27 of them in our blood.

These chemicals concoctions inside us can cause cancer, affect learning,

reproduction, concentration and digestion, disrupt the body’s hormonal and nervous systems, and provoke allergies.

This is why I became all the more concerned about the skin care products I used while pregnant. When you are growing a new human and then caring for a young life, you want to try provide the best, healthy start in life, and also keep yourself in good health to care for them.

So how do you get away from all these toxins? There are some good brands on the market that are truly natural, just always read labels (if you are in Australia

check out www.nourishedlife.com.au for the best

natural brands) or if you want to know exactly what goes into your products, customise them to your needs and save money, you can make your own. Which is what this ebook is all about, helping you to create your own.

It is also important to take a holistic approach to beauty and health. Consider the toxins and chemicals in cleaning products, products in the home, tap water, processed foods, as well as skin care products.

A closer look and further explanation of the methods used in the recipes in this ebook.

D O U B L E B O I L E R -

This is the most commonly and effective way to melt your waxes, butters and solid oils. To melt using the double boiler method, you will need a pyrex or heatproof bowl and a saucepan. Fill the saucepan with water (about 3/4 full) the bowl needs to sit nicely on the saucepan, so that it is not touching the water (so be sure to use a saucepan that is the right size). Put saucepan onto hotplate and boil water with bowl on top and your ingredients in the bowl. Leave boiling until melted, and keep an eye on it for drying out or boiling over.

O T H E R W AY S T O M E LT-

If you are in a hurry, it is possible to melt most ingredients in the microwave. Although I believe they may lose some of there nutrients in the process, so only use if you really need to. This can be handy for quickly melting coconut oil.Another way to melt coconut oil (as it has a low melt point) is to put the container with your coconut oil into a bowl of boiling water (from the kettle) and the hot water will melt it. You can also melt it fondue style in a bowl over a candle.

I M M E R S I O N B L E N D E R -

The easiest way to blend, for creating whipped butters and emulsified creams is with an immersion blender. If you wish to use another blender, that is fine, this is just the easiest way. It is easy to clean up and cheap to buy.

G R I N D I N G -

To make oat flour or to crush nuts into a fine powder for scrubs and bath soaks, a cheap coffee grinder, is a great way to quickly grind small quantities.

S T R A I N W I T H M U S L I N C L O T H -

When infusing oils with herbs, to stain them use a piece of muslin cloth hanging over a bowl and slowly pour oil over it, so the herbs are caught in the cloth and the oils drain into the bowl. Then pick up the edges of the cloth and ring out the last of the oils by hand. You can also use a nut milk bag.

C L E A N I N G U P A F T E R -

To clean equipment after using oils, butters and waxes, use boiling water straight from the kettle and wipe with paper towel or a cloth.

An all in one cleanser and make up remover. Most facial cleansers are soap based, but this

cleanser is more like a balm, it removes makeup and cleanses the face without destroying your

skin’s acid mantle (which a soap based cleanser will do). This cleanser contains honey, honey

has an acidic pH, which keeps your skins acid mantle intact and the pH balance of your skin

happy, and allows it to deal with bacteria as bacteria can’t thrive in an acidic environment.
