Introduction

A clean-cut vision of a future freed from the rat'snest of cables needed to power today's electronic gadgets

has come one step closer to reality.

Wireless power transmission or Wi-tricityas it is called, is the process that takes place in any

system where electrical energy is transmitted from a powersource to an electrical load, without interconnecting wires.

Nikola Tesla Teslas experiments caused every

animal within miles of his tower to flee and never return as

long his tower was operating. Finally he was supposed togive up as he ran out of money.

1964 William C. Brown

demonstrated on the CBS Walter Cronkite news amicrowave-powered model helicopter that received all the

power needed for flight from a microwave beam.

Methods

Radiation methodsVarious methods of transmitting power

wirelessly have been known for centuries. Perhaps the best knownexample is electromagnetic radiation, such as radio waves. Whilesuch radiation is excellent for wireless transmission of information,it is not feasible to use it for power transmission. Since radiation

spreads in all directions, a vast majority of power would end upbeing wasted into free space.

One can envision using directedelectromagnetic radiation, such as lasers, but this is not verypractical and can even be dangerous. It requires an uninterrupted

line of sight between the source and the device, as well as asophisticated tracking mechanism when the device is mobile.

Magnetically coupled resonance method

The system exploits "resonance", a phenomenonthat causes an object to vibrate when energy of a certain frequencyis applied. When two objects have the same resonance theyexchange energy strongly without having an effect on othersurrounding objects
