“We must be the change we wish to see” …...Gandhi
President’s report….
On the 15 th of August we held our ceremony marking Independence of India, thank you our much respected Life member Nemabhai Brijlal for accepting the ceremony duties, as this time Independence day fell on a Sunday we put on a morning tea and also invited Sunday school children, over 100 people attended! The High Commission of India held a ceremony proceeding our’s and some of us attended that. I would encourage our youth, thirty something’s – forty something’s and fifty something’s to participate in the coming months festivities planned such as Navratri and Diwali together with Gita Mandir calendar events! also the 50 plus dinner hosted by Mahila Samaj. Same subject different stance, the future focus for us has to be to provide programmes that cater for the first second third and forth generation of our community and as much as I would like to tell you how, as previously mentioned; we need you to engage with us to achieve the desired outcome! Various Executive and the BoT met recently to work through the problem of sound proofing and acoustics’ in our hall – at least over the last twenty four months we have had complaints from our neighbouring houses – the problem is serious and some solutions are being worked through to remedy. As we enter a phase of progressive development work it is important for members to know that all projects are duly considered consulted and costed. We have a lot of experience and expertise within the Executive and Board and it is my intent to get as much done as possible while we have this alignment! The day’s are getting longer and I trust you have coped through winter I look forward to your active participation at up coming event’s organised by the hard working executive and various committees – enjoy and help if asked! It’s cool to be Indian! Prakash Soma

Namaste What an amazing turnout at the flag hoisting ceremony for Independence day on 15th August. Thank you to all the parents for bringing the children in on time and so many in tradtional costumes – well done to all the children. It was heart-warming to see so many of our community come together for the celebrations – young and old. Last week we celebrated Rakshabandhan with the children in the mandir. The children had been taught how to make Rakhdis by Ashaben Mavji and so it was super to see so many of the younger children with their creations. Prabhodbhai, our pujari tied all the rakhis. A group of children are singing their hearts out to prepare a couple of bhajans for Janmashtmi on 2nd September. A reminder that the childrens aarti is at 7.00pm. Please bring your children along so that it becomes an experience for them and they can relate better when we discuss things in the mandir. Last week we sorted out our groups of children for the Diwali show. Please ensure your children attend regularly as practice is essential. Finally, Wellington Indian Association (Geeta mandir) will be celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with sthapna of Ganeshji on 11 September at 9.00am. What is Shravan Month? Shravan month is the fifth month of the Hindu calender beginning from Chaitra, and is the most auspicious month of the Chaturmas. On Purnima or fullmoon day, or during the course of the month the star 'Shravan' rules the sky, hence the month is called Shravan. This month is spread out with innumerably religious festivals and ceremonies and almost all the days of this month are auspicious. Shravan is considered the holiest month of the year. Each monday of this month, known as Shravana Somvar, is a special day in Shiva temples where the dharanatra hangs over the linga or the idol to bathe it with holy water, day and night. Devotees pile the linga high with Bel leaves and flowers and fast till sunset. The nandadeep (24 hour lamp) burns steadily in the temples.
Importance of Shravan Month
Legend believe that when the churning of oceans - Samudra Manthan - took place in the month of Shravan, fourteen different types of rubies came out. Thirteen of these were distributed amongst the demons, except Halahal (poison). Lord Shiva drank the Halahal and stored it in his throat. Hence the name Neelkantha (meaning blue throat) is attributed to Shiva. To reduce the strong effect of poison, Lord Shiva wore the crescent moon on his head. All the Gods, thereafter started offering the Ganges water to Lord Shiva to make lessen the effect of poison. Since, this happened in the month of Shravana, since then the
Shiva devotees offer the Ganges water in this month. It is considered highly auspicious to wear a rudraksha in Shravan month. As, Mondays or Somvars of Shravan month are specially observed with austerity. All Mondays are devoted to the worship of Shiva as this day is sacred to Lord Shiva. No other Mondays of other months are so greatly honoured. The belief is that in Shravan month, offering milk to Lord Shiva earns a lot of punya
