The Wider Qualifications within this booklet have been gathered together as a resource to aid schools and partner agencies with curriculum planning and development. These qualifications are available across Argyll & Bute and are being offered to our young people in a variety of contexts and settings. Description of course (module titles/brief information): The Award is achieved by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five for Gold) - Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and for Gold, a Residential. The young people find themselves helping people or the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential activity (Gold only). Friends Against Bullying

Description of course (module titles/brief information): Pupils receive anti-bullying training, deliver assemblies to younger pupils, give peer support, receive counselling skills training, plan, deliver and evaluate PSE lessons to younger pupils, patrol the school at lunchtimes and intervals (intervening/reporting as appropriate), visit primary schools to give a presentation, organise anti-bullying events, raise money for anti-bullying charities. Who can deliver the course? nce Argyll College, Clydebank College Cost: SUMs funding from Argyll College(if available) Costs: The school itself may have to fund or agreement sought in advance from Local Authority if funding assistance is required to deliver this course through Clydebank College. Where is it currently being delivered in Argyll and Bute? No school is currently delivering this subject Recommended Resources: Centres will require hospitality facilities for each of the Units in the Course. This will include a professional kitchen and restaurant. Both the kitchen and the restaurant will need to be equipped with sufficient equipment, tools and commodities to replicate that found in the industry. Personal protective clothing will be essential for all candidates when working in the kitchen. Learning and teaching packs have been produced for each Unit, in partnership with the Scotland's Colleges. These can be accessed via www.scotlandscolleges.ac.uk Progression Routes: Candidates could progress to SVQs within the Hospitality sector. Description of course (module titles/brief information): The John Muir Award is an environmental award that encourages people of all backgrounds to connect, enjoy and care for wild places through a structured yet adaptable scheme. The Award is not competitive but should challenge each participant. Taking part will develop an understanding of, and responsibility for, a chosen wild place or places. For some this will offer an opportunity to explore values and spirituality. John Muir Award Criteria: Four Challenges are at the heart of each John Muir Award. To achieve an Award each participant must: Discover a wild place Explore its wildness Conserve - take personal responsibility Share experiences There are 3 levels of the Award encouraging a progressive involvement. Leadership Award

1x 20 hour unit and 1 x 40 hour unit Description of course (module titles/brief information): The Leadership Award develops knowledge of leadership skills, styles and qualities. It is designed for learners who take, or plan to take, a leading role for an activity. The Leadership Award is endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute. The Award at either level consists of two mandatory units. Leadership: As an Introduction to this unit, candidates carry out research to find out about leadership styles and the skills and qualities found in effective leaders. Candidates are required to produce a report on their findings and evaluate their own potential for leadership. Leadership in Practice In this unit, candidates take a leading role in an activity. They will prepare to carry out the activity by considering the factors involved, such as resources, people, time and risk. Candidates then carry out the activity, monitoring progress and making changes as needed. At the end, they will review their experience, drawing conclusions about themselves as a leader. Psychology

A range of five key topics are studied within six core Domains:

It is intended that Intermediate 2 Psychology will address the needs of various candidate groups. For those new to the subject at Intermediate 2 level, the course serves as an introduction to the discipline of psychology, whilst for those who have already studied the subject, for example, at Intermediate 1, the course encourages development of more in-depth knowledge and understanding, basic skills of analysis and evaluation, and more detailed research skills. Saltire Awards

Name of Course: Saltire Award Qualification: Volunteering at an Event Certificate

Awarding Body: ASDAN SCQF Level: Level 3 – 2 credits

Age Range: 12 - 25 Length of Course: In general, challenges are completed over 10, 30 or 60 hours

Description of course (module titles/brief information): Young people between the ages of 12 – 25 can register to volunteer with the Saltire Award Scheme and receive awards signed by Scottish Ministers (from 10 hours of voluntary work up to 500 hours) the awards are complimented by Young Scot vouchers. Accredited certificates in Volunteering are also available to those registered with Saltire. For example those embarking on the Saltire Challenge could also be working for the Volunteering at an Event Certificate (Access level 3, carrying 2 credits). This is a stand along qualification and supports candidates in developing the skill and knowledge needed to make an effective contribution at an event. For some volunteers this will be a stepping stone to further training, qualifications and employment. For others the Saltire Challenge Award and the Volunteering at an Event Certificate are the goal and reward for their voluntary commitment. Who can deliver the course? Argyll Voluntary Action

Description of course (module titles/brief information): The course is one of a range of National Courses known as Skills for Work Courses. This course has been designed to provide a broad basis for progression into further education and training in the land-based sector. It allows candidates to begin to develop some of the basic practical skills necessary to work in most of these disciplines as well as an opportunity to explore the very diverse employment prospects that exist. The mandatory units are:- DV0A 10 Estate Maintenance: An Introduction 1 credit (40 hours) DV0V 10 Land-based Industries: An Introduction 1 credit (40 hours) DV0W 10 Employability Skills for Land-based Industries 0.5 credit (20 hours)

Description of course (module titles/brief information): The course content covers the main practical involved in carrying out a support role in a sports and recreation environment – assisting with planning, setting up and delivering activity sessions; assisting with setting up, dismantling and checking equipment and resources; assisting with accident and emergency procedures; dealing effectively and courteously with customers/users, staff and others; helping to plan and review a personal training programme, establishing good practice in setting and reviewing personal goals. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop relevant vocational skills, and a variety of employability skills, in the context of a sport and recreation setting. Some of these skills could be looked upon as generic skills required in the wider workplace, while others are specific employability skills required for the recreation sector. The course requires that candidates gain hands-on experience in an appropriate recreational setting and it is important for centres to manage the course in an integrated manner that reflects the day-to-day issues of a realistic sport and recreation environment. Description of course (module titles/brief information): The course introduces candidates to the uniformed and emergency services. The relevant uniformed services for this course are: the Army, Merchant Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The relevant emergency services for this course are: the Ambulance Service, Coastguard, Fire and Rescue and Police. It includes investigating the different uniformed and emergency services and the roles and responsibilities of those working in a specific service team. Candidates will also investigate career opportunities in the uniformed and emergency services. Health, safety, fitness and well being are important aspects when working in the uniformed and emergency services. Therefore, candidates will explore these aspects and participate in physical fitness practical activities. The candidate will be introduced to the process of carrying out assessment of risk and will also investigate the skills required to assist others to deal with an unexpected situation such as communicating effectively.
