Microsoft has created Business Intelligence lecture supplements tohelp fill this need. They provide an overview of the basic conceptsof Business Intelligence (Modules 1 & 2) and then dive a little
deeper into the business and technical sides of BusinessIntelligence (Modules 3 & 4). Along with these are lab exercisesleveraging SQL Server 2005 technology in a preconfigured labenvironment.

The Problem With Data
Most companies have plenty of data, but datais not information
Data is often spread across multiple systems,
stored in different formats, and may even belocalized for different countries
The first challenge is to consolidate the data
so that it is consistent and accessible
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
9/33
What is Business Intelligence?
Once data is consolidated, it must still beturned into information
People must be able to easily grasp what they
see
The information should support easyexploration so users can answer their own
questionsBI should support many different kinds of user
needs

10/33
What is Data Mining?
Data mining is a specialized branch of BI thatuses statistical algorithms to examine data
These algorithms seek to identify trends and
relationships that might otherwise not beapparent
Data mining is often used to performpredictive analysis (the forecasting of futuretrends)

Information Workers Typically managers or staff
working in the back office Line Workers Employees who might use BI
without knowing it

Reports
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
21/33
The Purpose ofReports
Reports allow a much broader audience tobenefit from the data in a BI solution
Reports may be static, requiring no training
Reports may also allow a limited amount of
interactivity
Reports can be presented in a variety of
formats, allowing for easier distribution
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
22/33
Benefits to the Organization
BI data are available to almost all people in anorganization
Reports can be emailed, viewed over the Web,
or distributed in other ways to a very wideaudience
Some analytic capabilities can be provided tomany users
Reports can consolidate data from a numberof BI databases
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
23/33
The Contents ofReports
Reports may include high level data such asKPIs
More detailed information can be presented,
especially for specific salespeople, customers, and so on
Reports may show the details of a singletransaction, or a history of data over a span oftime

24/33
Application Integration
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
25/33
The Purpose of Custom ApplicationIntegration
An application used by line workers mayinclude business intelligence without theworker realizing what is happening
A sales clerk may get a list of targetedrecommendations to make based on what the
customer is buying
A loan officer may be presented with the level of
risk associated with granting a loan to a particular
customer
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
26/33
Benefits of Custom Application Integration
Business Intelligence is pushed into everylevel of the organization without the need fortraining
(or even knowledge of what BI is and how to useit)
The analytic process can be simplified andtailored on a per application basis
Line workers gain benefits from the BI capitalof the organization as part of doing their dailywork
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
27/33
The Contents of Custom ApplicationIntegration
Custom applications may include predictiveoutput from data mining models
Custom applications can show history and
trends for the current customer, supplier, andso forth
Custom applications may allow easy ways forusers to explore the data for relationships
-

28/33
Analytic Applications
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
29/33
The Purpose of Analytic Applications
Analytic applications free analysts frombuilding complex models and writing complexqueries
Analysts are free to focus on the data anddiscover relationships and drivers behindnumbers
Rich visualizations allow much easierunderstanding of trends and relationships
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
30/33
Benefits of Analytic Applications
Data is significantly easier to analyze
Analysts can focus on analyzing the data andnot writing complex queries
Reports created with analytic applications canbe pushed out to the organization
Graphical tools provide users throughout the
organization with powerful reports andanalytic capabilities
-
8/6/2019 Widyatama.lecture.business Intelligence (0641611) Week11 Microsoft BI V1.1
31/33
The Contents of Analytic Applications
Analytic applications typically have no limits;analysts can see everything
Analytic applications can view and analyze all
of an organizations data in a number of ways
Analytic applications are powerful, but not aseasy to use as other mechanisms
