  • 7TOWER OF BABEL

In the mercantile world, where money and economy is power, architecture became a product, which can be used in a good way to sell human aspirations. The more spec-tacular the better. Architecture no longer meets the needs of human living, it becomes a monument to money, prestige, a formal vision, somewhere, leaving behind its subject human being. This dangerous trend leads to rejection of human as a fundament of architecture. Humanity is being alienated in architecture. Architecture is created only for architecture. Anonymous cold and unfriendly buildings with overwhelming scale.

This skyscraper is the ever-living monument of its creators and their aspirations. Skyscraper as an endless tale, monument which is still under construction. Building lives its own life, constantly evolving. Is an accumulation of various trends in architecture. Truly tower of Babel.

Skyscraper is basically a mutation of the Palace of Culture and Science, which was established in 1955 in destroyed center of Warsaw (Poland). The building was built in area which was earlier densely built-up by downtown buildings, destroyed during World War 2. The main author was a Soviet architect Lev Rudniew working with a team of Polish architects.

The project continues intentions of architects of this building to create a building monument, the carrier of the Communist idea. Among the inhabitants of Warsaw object arouses many emotions. Although it is the most recognizable symbol of Warsaw as well as some sort of landmark, by its enormity, is a controversial building. It is a symbol of Soviet domination and enslavement of the Polish nation. It also totally misses the terms of local architecture and urban planning. Does not fit the scale and linkage with the surrounding buildings, urban layout and culture of the city. It is a monument of IDEA. A monument of its creators. Hypertrophy of form over content that dominates over the Warsaw. Political and cultural realities have changed, but concept to create monuments in architecture still remains. Ideas have changed but the rules of creation the architecture still remains the same.

This project sees the skyscraper as something in constant construction. The building is maze of glued together architectural blocks which are not finished, incomplete or damaged. Building is a response to capitalist approach to architecture. It reveals dystopia which can be create by modern approach to architecture

  • 9CITY WITHIN A CITY ADAPTATION OF THE PALACE OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE IN WARSAW MASTER DIPLOMA

The thesis subject is a theoretical consideration of the mutual relations and interactions between Space (understood as architectural creation and in the broader context as the entire reality) and Man. Influence and its resoults. These considerations are conducted on a hypothetical adaptation of the Palace of Culture and Science on the city inside the building.

Space under consideration is Warsaw and its exact center (Parade square). This space had been chosen because of its creation and modification which takes place for centuries. The space, which was shaped by an infinite number of external factors and also, that interact with great force on the people inhabiting it. Interact on many levels (ideologically, semantically, emotionally, etc.).

The project intention is to show potential of the Palace of Culture and Science as an urban space. The individual fragments are designed to show the flexibility and sensitivity to changes of the building structure. By changing function of the Palace the flexibility of a Space is being proved. It is also being proved that a human being is able to widely process the Space within existing conditions. The aim is to illustrate the actual and ambiguous, dynamic correlation between man and a Space. This is not an architectural project in the strict sense, although it uses the architectural language. FORM does not matter, because it is not possible to clearly determine the finish formal result of these interactions. There are too many variables and dependencies. This is not an attempt to define patterns of Man-Space relations, their taxonomy or analysis. This study notice the fact, in which all of us are participate consciously or not. We create the Space and the Space creates/defines us

Project is divided into three time stages1. Starting stage, in which the city is being designed: geometrical divisions of functions and zone plans, which occurs also in volume of building. This stage takes place in the space currently available inside the Palace of Culture, using the existing technical infrastructure and economic building base (facilities, parking, etc.). It shows the potential of space through the proposed design solutions. Proposed changes are not revolutionary. The object is not in bad technical condition. The existing infrastructure is sufficient.2. Space processing stage. Space is being process by inhabitants. City gradually loses its original character, changes occur mainly in the level of individuals. Space locally adopts itself to given conditions and temporary needs of individuals. City changes locally.3. Further space processing stage. By accumulation of point changes city completely loses its original character. Further changes results in disappearance of design intent and lack of readability in functional divisions.

The Project shows how the proposed urban space is dynamically changed by the human element. It shows how the city works, how it develops from project stage to its creation. A good analogy can be found in a renaissance ideal cities mutation into contemporary city where the original symmetry and order disappears in time. The design principle is contained in the first stage. Next steps shows the Space processing in one out of millions of configurations. Selected path of creation aims to show in a distinct way the existence of dynamic interactions between Man and Space.

SCULPTING CONCEPTION FOR GRANICZNE ROUNDABOUT:Wroclaw in the early XXI century, aspire to occurre on the European map. With this aspiration go hand in hand all the important features of a developing city after a long slumber: dynam-ics, curiosity, change, openness, roots. The concept tries to combine and present it in space.

The dynamic form with implicate order, reflects the spirit of the times in which arises - a movement, individuality, courage. It also shows the aspirations for the future - visibility, mo-dernity and timelessness. The sculpture is connected with the place, with Wroclaw and its inhabitants - open to new, unique, dynamic and characteristics. It uses famous places of Wroclaw to create its structure.

Tissue reveals outlines of buildings associated with the City on major axes. They are con-stantly in motion, every point of view trims the structure or introduces chaos. The viewer has full control of what he watches, when moving he controls what he sees. Along the tram lane sequence of photographs shows life of the Market Square. Dynamic to tram passengers im-age is created by multiplication - due to the movement.. Animation is a life going on in the center of Wroclaw, part of which are also the people in the vehicle.

Sculpture clearly defines the place of the observer in space. It is an information point and gateway to the city. Located on the main route from the airport to the center welcomes visi-tors with an accent they will not forget.

GARDEN CONCEPTION FOR DOMAINE DE CHAUMONT-SUR-LOIRE FESTIVALThe gardens idea reaches the deepest and darkest part of the human psy-che fear, anxiety, threat feeling. Predatory reality reaches and surrounds from everywhere, trying to strip remains of the humans values. White tree is symbol of false hope towards which in the last moment the man clutch. Whiteness stand out sharply against background, focusing the entire atten-tion on itself. Senility of the tree is a delusion, golden bird, giving hope for better tomorrow but inside empty. Contras colour combination and fluctuat-ing rhythmically surfaces cause lost of perspective depth. Because of that the garden is noticed as the indissoluble wholeness.

The garden is a composition of sophisticated wooden structure stained to the shade of black. Beams were made of construction wood ( diameter 10 x 10 cm). Main structural element is a wooden wreath surrounding the garden. It bonds all elements together. Detail of the connection visible on the Detail picture.

In the gardens centre is located old dry tree, impregnated to the white col-our. In order to avoid the problem with bedding, it is proposed to exaggerate grown-up tree.

HOUSE FOR INTROVERT CONCEPT:User Characteristics: Raciona-Intuitive Introvert, age about 30 years, lonely, idealist, a mathematician, individualist seeker, a scientist.

Building:Output form is a cube with sides of 7 m. The Cube is divided essentially into two parts: upper residential and lower - construction reduced to a massive reinforced concrete pillar. The residential part is located at a height of 3.5 meters above the bustling pedestrian crossing /crossroad/plaza. User residing inside can (if he wants to) observe from above passersby. If someone is interesting - will be transported into the cube. The space inside has no vertical divisions, only inconspicuous horizontal splits. The user understands volume, where he lives as a whole and therefore it would be a mistake to focus on a particular detail of the interior. External walls form a time-variable structure which dynamic system creates changable interior atmosphere . Wall opening combination reflects internal, higher logic guiding the user. Only he can interpret and guess the layout. Depends on him whether the system at a given moment will change. Each "pixel" consists of three layers: 1. Impenetrable to light, 2. Impenetrable to sound, 3. Permeable to air, impenetrable to sound and light. This allows selection stimulus coming from the outside world ac-cording to user's needs.

The functional division are movable modular squared frame spaces reduced to structure. They form the floor along with outer coating made of milky glass / frosted translucent plastic. Floor construction offers various possibili-ties of living space arrangement . At night the squares stand out strongly against the light-permeable floor. Their position is visible from the ground level. It is a kind of abstract inhabitant message understandable only for few. On modular squares furnishings is located - clean, functional, without unnecessary detail. Interior colors are limited to black and white. Communication with the ground level provides an elevator, which is one of the functional modules.

By its uncompromising form the building dominates the space. It says simply that a man living in this place is different. Imposes itself by constant change of both walls and floors. Through the structure of the building inhabitant communicates his message to the outside world.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA AROUND ROUNDABOUT GRAN-ICZNE IN WROCLAW

Urban tissue is a complex system that combines various func-tions - communication systems, building, urban greenery, pedestrian and bicycle routes, trade and services. These dif-ferent elements create network of branches that define the space, leading from main routes to more local. This depend-ency became an inspiration to create a space based on the tree schema . Its branches spread out from the center of the roundabout Graniczne - the development center - and further radially to undeveloped land.

Natural features of tree branches have been preserved - their irregular structure, the angles at which they spread and vari-able width. Because of that terrain has strong tectonic charac-ter. After diagram transformation for the purposes of architec-ture, the branches have become the axes of high greenery for pedestrian communication and cycling. The spaces between them were filled with buildings. Propagated in a natural way streets, form squares and a framework for landmarks.

An additional aim to diversify the space is height variation of individual parts, which gives the effect of waving space. The green strings were lowered below ground level. These levels align with the ramp across the pedestrian and cycling commu-nication. This applies also to buildings. Their roofs are inclined planes forming a continuation of each other.

DESIGN OF NOWY TARG SQUARE IN WROCAWThe project is based on chip sche-matic. The integrated circuit is start-ing point for both: form and idea of the project. On one hand, objects that ex-ist on square surface result from chart lines on the other hand, as the name suggests, this system integrates the entire space. It determines the layout of components, both paving, and spa-tial elements, such as greenery, land-scaping elements, communication , or pavilion.

The consolidation, however, goes deeper. With delicate surrounding intervention into building elevations, it binds more strongly with the site. The consolidation also goes into the depths - into the underground car park. With a fragmented glass con-struction and flowing into the interior greenery, we create a Square as one architectural element. Whats more, parking space becomes a unique as-set, not only asexual repository for cars.

HOMELESS HIPSTERSThe product creation of lifestyle and everyday objects of home-less people. By creating a brand we turn the homeless into so-ciety. By giving economic value for homeless, people begin to see them as a kind of subculture. People starts to copy home-lessness. Economics tames the Problem. Homelessness as a lifestyle / way of life we do not give them home or immediate assistance, we create long-term program of changing society. We give homeless identity and economic value.

Homeless SWOT:Strengths: diversity, freedom, outside the society (art, anarchy / punk), cheap way of life, recycling of civilization wastes.Weaknesses: social stigma, pathologies (dirt, stench, poverty, alcoholism, drugs, lack of perspectives and links with society), lack of identification, social resistance against inclusion of the homeless.Opportunities: good topic for a product (alternative is in fashion)- For the homeless: get rid of the stigma, elimination of pathology, identification, purity, originality;- For society: a new quality, the taming of the problem.Target: the Art, young people in need of identification, the home-less (from homeless to celebrity), government organizations and NGOs
