Topic: A Monk’s life and the Medieval Church

Learning outcomes:

• Investigating what a Monks life was like and the sacrifices they made to live this life.

• Showing empathy and producing a diary account as though you were a medieval

monk.

• Looking at how the medieval Church was structured.

• Interpreting doom paintings and realising how the Church may have used this fear to

their advantage.

• Produce your own sermon, warning peasants about hell!

• Investigating how people tried to get into heaven and whether this was easier

depending on wealth.

• (Optional challenge) Capture an image of yourself delivering your sermon.

Instructions:

You have been given a booklet of information, along with an activities booklet. You need to

work through the activities booklet whilst using the information provided.

Once this is completed please email it over to me. You can either complete work in the

answer booklet, or on paper.

Lesson 1 –What was a Monks life like?

Medieval Monk

Tonsure – The hair represented the ‘crown of thorns’ worn by Christ when he was crucified.

Cowl – This was a hood.

Girdle – This belt showed Monk’s still belonged to the world. On it hung a cross, the symbol of being a monk.

Habit – This was the robe. It was made of rough cloth so it would irritate their skin and remind them of Christ’s suffering.

Sandals – These shoes reminded Monks they had to be humble like Christ.

Why did Medieval people believe?1. The first reason why people went

to Church is because it was fun.

2. Another reason why they went to Church is because they thought hell was such a scary place

3. If you died with a dirty soul you would go to either purgatory or straight to hell.

4. You had to go to church and get the priest to clean your soul.

5. If you died with a clean soul you would go to heaven.

6. Going to church helped you to get to heaven.

• Can you name any of the seven deadly sins?

Route 3—buying your way in to Heaven

• People believed that nearly everyone went to Purgatory. Purgatory was a place between Heaven and Hell. To move from Purgatory to Heaven you had to be sorry for your sins and people who were still alive would have to pray for you.

• People would often leave money for prayers to be said for them to help them escape Purgatory. Rich people would pay for colleges to be set up, where priests did nothing but pray for the dead.

• The less well off paid to join guilds (associations) which would arrange to hold masses for their soul after they died.

• You could also buy indulgences. These would free you from your sins and you would go straight to Heaven when you died but these were expensive.

• —Now imagine that you are that monk and it is your first day in the monastery.

• —Write a diary entry for one day, explaining all the things that you have done – try to include as much detail as you can, such as what food you ate, the jobs you did and how you feel about being in the monastery. Give yourself a name suitable for a monk. You can even write about your friends at the monastery!

Task 4• Using these pictures, write a sermon from a priest for your congregation

warning them about the peril of sin and the consequences of being a sinner. Describe what hell is like. Make it sound as gruesome as possible! Try to include:

• You dressed up as a Monk (though I know 99.9% of you won’t have that costume laying around at home)
