Dear ICC,
First of all, I am very happy to know that you were kind enough to admit
my family into your monetarily rich party featuring your more glitzy
friends. I am also sad that you are planning to reduce your party size bydoing away with us for the next party. I thought you were delighted to
have us at your parties every time.
Do you remember, sir? We used to be with you right from your first party,
the one you hosted in England in 1975. My uncle from Africa used to tell
glorious tales about it to me. He enjoyed it a lot. He told me how he got
to meet so many big names of cricket. he only heard of many of them,
didn't see them until he could face them just 4 yards away. He used to
say that he didn't have TV sets in those days, and only a few radio sets
in the whole city to know about this game he had inherited from thefriendly people who came to his home. Only one of his kids has attended
your party since.
You wouldn't even give us a smile, but we took the invitation itself as a
great honour. In 1983, my Lankan aunt danced better than your Kiwi
friend, and that was the first time you took a photograph with us. Our
family was very excited. We thought we had attained the pinnacle of joy
that day. But one day 13 years later, she won the dance competition on
your floor, and you adopted her into your family. We were so happy that
some of our kids will grow in those posh households of yours.
But, most of us still live in the ignored land. We didn't complain much, sir,
to be honest. We were just happy enough that atleast one of us came tothe grand event, so that he or she would return home and tell us about it.
It was like being the first boy in the family to graduate, or earn in a big
city!
In 1992, we actually played the party game better than the big man of the
house, The Lord of Marylbone. We used to spend years and years just
looking at him play it like there was no other to match him. Of course, his
two favourite mates, one with a strong accent and one who liked
Caribbean music played it like him. The three of them were our idols.
By 1996, the African uncle's son became good at dancing and beat ouraunt (who now ate in your house). She was proud of us that day too! You
had also invited more from our family, so we could have fun amongst
ourselves, when you had a high profile buffet in your "big wigs only"
mansion. We enjoyed playing in the mud, but we always wondered what
was inside. Our aunt was in there, but she never came out. I think she
became a much better dancer than we ever knew. Money can buy many
things they say. We were happy that she was the best dancer on her own
floor.
My cousin from Zimbabwe had also improved on his singing skills for the1999 party. My cousins Scotland (Scottie) and Kenya (Keens) took along
my baby sister from Bangladesh to the game. We were so glad to watch
on the public TV that cuz' Zimmy was allowed to have dinner with the
sizzling stars after the evening party ended! And sister Bangu came
home all smiles, after her last drawing fetched her a big bar of chocolate.
Do you realise how much that means to us? We pasted all of Bangu's
Letter to ICC. With love, Minnows.

drawings all around our house, and everybody would tell her that she
was going to scale new heights. Little Bangu could just smile and eat her
chocolate bar.
In 2003, you allowed Namibs and Keens to host our own party game. We
all came to their beautiful houses, and we also saw Keens beat our aunt
again. She wasn't that happy, but I'm sure she was proud of us. We wereproud of us, for sure. Little Bangu couldn't draw better than uncle Canny
from Canada, but we gave her another bag of candies so she would not
lose hope on herself. She just nodded and went home with the
candybag, promised to come up with better art work next time. You see,
we all loved what we did. You took the centre stage, and we danced
around you. You came to our home, and sometimes you didn't even
come to our place though we invited you. We had to come to your dinner
to discuss about it, but we were had to leave before the dessert, since
we haven't had much of them, and didn't know how to handle the spoon
on the ice cream. We spilled the soda, and we had to leave.
You invited more of us to Caribbean uncle's yacht. We were so happy,
we came there in different colours from around the globe. We brought in
new tricks. We were outplayed in many competitions in the party by your
glorious friends, but we had our moments. You remember my baby
nephew from Bermuda playing slug fest when the Indian musician was
singing? We had fun, they all had fun. And remember Bangu? She had
grown into a beautiful artist, and could also sing better than your Indian
girl friend. She had so much ego that she went home early. I heard her
friends started teasing her very much. We didn't mean to hurt her, we justwanted to show her Bangu's multi talented personality. Bangu's modern
art were better than Zuid Avrica's, you know? Zuid was surprised his
painting got ruined. My sister in law, Irine came in too. She too sang
beautifully, she is good at country and folk. But you would never know
that, as you lived in pop and rock and whatever you call it...rap? Your
Pakistani star actually slipped a tone while trying a duet duel with her.
You see, we always had a nice thing or two to do in all your parties. Even
in this year's party, we have been at or around the lime light, but you
treat us like your slaves. We have to carry your party caps to the ball
room. You can't have the party if we don't help you decorate it. You say
we don't know table manners, while you never care to teach us. You say
we don't know how to party, while you never let us party with you in the
any other place. We can't learn from just one party in 4 years, sir. We canwatch you swing and sizzle, but when we try, we don't look that cool. We
know it, but we can't help it, since you always shun us after the party
hours.
And because your girl friend got angry last time, you scheduled your
party such that we can't enter into your swimming pool and enjoy it for a
little longer time. Sorry sir, if you are trying to indirectly say that you don't
like us at the back of your photograph, we are very hurt. We do look
beautiful, we don't use make up. But, you fail to see the point. You rich
people have a little too much of pride to stoop an inch below yourglasses of suspect and look at our beauty.
By closing the doors on us for the next party, what do you think I will tell
my children about all these fun? That we had a good time watching you
guys light the crackers, and that our children may not even get the
privilege to see them?
What we had held as a dream is diminishing every day, and maybe some
day our kids will call it a fairy tale, too much to be real.
Sir, we enjoyed whatever you allowed us, and we will make sure that wewill eat your cake in this party, and make a point or two before we leave
for good.
Yours lovingly, (we still love you)
Mr. Minnow & family

The day when thunder cracked through the ground,
The sea rose to plunder whats not its own.
We were locked away in our hopes and dreams,
And all were washed away, nothing left unconvinced.
Scattered were the things of sticks and stones,
A chance, I presume, given to atone.
The sky sung with lights and of tomorrow,
But will it change the bygones and unsaid sorrows?
All that once was is now lost and withered,
Bathed in vivid hues of grey and red.
Few remain to tell the horrors of that day,
Etched in the hearts filled with daunt and dismay.
Oh sea!! Why do your hands keep reaching for my feet?
I have nothing but forgiveness and repentance to give.
Take my tears for my loved ones to where you have kept
safely tucked in the dark realms of your depth.

Liberation in Libya has been the trending news in what has been the most
dramatic turnarounds in the Middle Eastern nations, hitherto ruled by
monarchs and autocratic individuals, the best known being Col.
Muammar Gaddaffi or should I say notorious? Having virtually ruled the
country for over 40 years since 1969, Gaddaffi has made more enemiesthan friends during his authoritative regime, which is bound to end the
way he probably wouldnt want to. For the last four decades, Libyans
have witnessed suppression and divisive politics, and hence been filling a
dormant yet steady cauldron of outrage and rebellion. The current revolt
against the authoritative chunk of leaders is no surprise its just a venting
of the collective wrath in the hearts of the public.
Apparently being fuelled by the rather successful civil uprising in
neighboring Egypt, it has been almost a month since the first display of
unrest and outcry in Benghazi, an important city, and Tripoli, the capital.
The Day of Rage, on Feb. 17th sparked continued displays of public
outrage against the government, extending uptil the present day. With
already about 3000 people dead and several thoussands injured, Tripoli
has been a ravaging warlike zone as angered Anti Gaddaffi forces fightthe powerful loyalists of the Gaddaffi government, now a spent force
politically.
But how did the people strike at the right time? What could have possibly
weakened the 40 year dictatorship by one of the most powerful rulers of
the middle east? The factors that promoted the belligerence and the
events that turned in Gaddaffis weakness is quite a story in itself.
Gaddaffi had always been known as a shrewd and imposing politician
with a steel fist when it came to power. Among his intelligent tactics were
filling his political network with sons, blood relatives and closeassociates, and dealing with his critics the hard way. While he had
always maintained mixed relationships with the West, a pact that
Gaddaffi signed with the US has now proved to be his Achilles heel.
According to the deal, Gaddaffi sold his rights to employ or sell nuclear
weapons for a huge sum of money, back in the early 2000s. Gaddaffi
had earlier been known to possess a huge inventory of nuclear material,
therefore this came as a sigh of relief to numerous western powers. But
having now landed into a critical position he least expected, Gaddaffi has
slipped into oblivion due to fear of the uprising, and tactfully blames the
West as to instigating the current revolts.
Whether or not Libya moves towards democracy, it has certainly taken a
brave step forward in trying to annihilate one of its strongest barriers to
democracy in the form of a once war hero, now a tyrant. A new belief
has been instilled in the hearts of the Libyans who have looked up to
their Tunisian and Egyptian counterparts. Tomorrow will arrive, soon.
w w w . w i k i t o d a y . o r g
K
Karl Marx once suggested that all demographicentities will sooner or later be gobbled up intosocialism and democracy. With Egypt alreadyhaving moved on to the next level towardsdemocracy and now Libya stepping in towardspeoples rule, one can only ponder over Marxs
unmistakable view of the future.

Music

When David Gilmour left for the home lights of England (on a truck!), hed
have little wondered that he was going to make arguably the most
influential lineup in rock music since The Beatles. Beginning his guitaring
stint in France and Spain with a few friends, he played for a band they
formed together. His big break came much later though, in the form of awrithing Syd Barrett then the frontman who had grave difficulties in
performing and writing for Pink Floyd, thanks to his depression from drug
abuse. With his blues influenced soulful solos, he quickly notched up the
fame ladder, and quite predictably, by the late 70s, he was the most
loved member of the band.
While the first few albums garnered the attention of the general people
who were by then tired with the popular blues rock for their folk soaked
musical style, the subsequent ones witnessed a paradigm shift in Pink
Floyds sound from country to classical and jazz influences. Then came
their most significant album, The Dark Side of the Moon a complete
deviation from what was believed to be standard rock music. Critics
began to turn into fans Pink Floyd had arrived! Following it up with suchalbums as Wish You Were Here, The Animals, and The Wall, Pink Floyd
made its presence felt in the popular music charts.
Pink Floyds USP was not exactly about their bluesy melodies and
stirring lyrics, as compared to their remarkably progressive sound, given
the rather sparse technology at that time. The music was characterized
by the psychedelia of kaleidoscopes, the faint wailings of UFOs, and the
cosmic echoes of heavenly bodies, all put together in resounding
harmony. Adding to the out of the world effect was the heavily
engineered lead guitar patches and the unforgettable solos that are stillpart of regular must listen lists in rock music. What began as a band
experimenting with psychedelic riffs and patches eventually ended up
bringing about an irrevocable revolution in popular music.
To this day, Pink Floyds live shows (with the alive members) are a
plethora of scintillating color lights, an amazing surround sound and their
evergreen waves of progressive music, as has always been. David
Gilmour, now a solo musician, continues to enthral huge audiences that
grew up listening to Pink Floyd with his timeless musicality and technique
that is beyond physical aging.

All the pain I had from the last nights bumpy ride from Trichy to
Rameshwaram went away once the strong breeze of fresh air brushed
my face. After a strenuous effort, I open my eyes to see the heaven on
earth. One of the most picturesque views I had ever seen in my entire
life. Blue Ocean, rocky beach on one side and sandy on the other, greentrees behind the beach, huts arranged along them in the most perfect
manner possible and in front, the engineering marvel of the pre
independence era, the Pamban Railway bridge. I am standing on the
recently built vehicle traffic bridge along the Pamban Railway Bridge,
which is also called Pamban Bridge. It bridges the Rameshwaram Island
with the mainland of India, which is divided by Palk Strait.
The view of f ishermen
fishing, their boats dancing
to the tune of the wavesand prize catch shining like
bronze medal in sun is
something that capture my
eyes for so long that I
forget what made me come
here. Suddenly, I hear a
tr ains whistle r ising
between the chorus of waves and then I turn my head to the Pamban
railway bridge. An engineering masterpiece sculpted in steel, so amazing
that it took my breath away as my eyes witnessed a train actually rollingover it.
Surprisingly this 93 years old railway bridge, constructed in 1914, is
made of steel in worlds second most corrosive environment. Bridging a
gap of 2.3 km., this bridge stood as the longest bridge in India till Bandra
Worli Sealink recently surpassed it. The bridge is a cantilever bridge
which accommodates a single broad gauge track. Not surprised? Well,
the interesting thing is that still it stands a functional double leaf bascule
bridge which facilitates the passing of ships under it by opening up in the
centre from two sides, a feat that still remain a challenge to the worlds
greatest bridge builders.
As I stand here admiring the shining steel wonder against the blue water,
with a slice of juicy pineapple in my hand, a group of travelers get off
their bus. Within no time I am surrounded by another bunch of awestruck
admirers covering their mouth with their fingers as if trying to avoid a fish
to pop into their open mouth. Well, I cant blame them it is something
which will leave anyone spell bound. After a 45 minute conversationamong my friends which only comprised of whoooo ., amazing,
breathtaking, superb and few other words that came out of excitement
but didnt mean anything I start walking back to the bus stand on the
Rameshwaram side of the bridge. Though I walk back to keep up with
my schedule, I just cant resist looking back at Pamban for one more
time.

And just when you start thinking that you have seen it all, you see the
monumental Charminar standing in front of you. Every step you take
towards it, it imbibes you all the more into its charm and when you reach
this whole new world, the speakers start roaring allah ho akhbar . and
suddenly the entire place turns solemn and all you see is the Charminarand the Mecca Masjid.
As you move ahead, a distinct fragrance attracts you to one of the tea
joints next to Charminar. Well, sipping Irani tea next to Charminar may not
be a dream to any ordinary person, but once you have done it, your
senses will keep reminding you to do it again and again. The haunting
aroma of the badi patti blended with the amazing flavor of chotti patti will
seduce your taste buds in such a way that calling back miyan for another
cup becomes formidable.
Just as you keep piling empty tea cups on your table and crush the
cigarette butt on the floor, oh yes you can smoke here without eyebrows
being raised at you, you see the antique clock embedded on theCharminar and as you stare at it, you eventually reach a different era.
Sitting with your close friends, as the tea keeps flowing, the
conversations get endless and blame it on the Irani Chai, you eventually
pour your heart out. Your brain soothes, your body relaxes, your
problems find solutions and suddenly you forget all the pain you have
taken to reach this place, as you cherish every sip of the amazing tea.
But here, its not just the tea or the Charminar its the ambience, the
surrounding, the shining pearls, the fragrance of unique perfumes, thedimly lit endless arcade corridors of the bazaar which blend among
themselves to give you this unforgettable experience. Though all the
flashy cafs claim that a lot can happen over a cup of coffee, the Irani
Chai at Charminar does deliver.

The Baghira Log hut Room no. 8
It is a moonlit night. Sitting on the staircase, the surrounding space
opens into the wilderness outside Sal trees interspersed with thick
bushes. Be it the rustle of leaves at a distance due to some subtle
movement or the distinctive calls of the deer and the peacock, it gives
you goose bumps. The tiger is on the prowl. Is it a pair of glowing eyes
far away or merely an optical illusion? The answer is uncertain It is arare mlange of fear and ecstasy.
Occasionally, a characteristic stillness marks the surroundings the
leaves unruffled, the silence untainted. The moon bathes the distant
hedges in white, creating an eerie effect. An unsettling feeling takes over.
The unpredictable darkness replaces the morning innocence. You fight
the irresistible urge to return and lock yourself safely in the room. But
wait Is it totally safe in there? The window with the glass panes
A shadowy movement somewhere around the staircase makes you miss
a heartbeat. You spring into action but it is just your neighbor coming to
stand on the porch. You return to the stairs, more vigilant than ever. The
night has a dreamy tinge to it.
The pristine silence is intermittently broken by the nightly calls of the
barking deer and the nightjar. Also, a casual chatter over coffee prevails
at a distant hut. You reflect on the hardships of recent bygone days. The
pent up mind was driven to extremes. Now, at last A gentle breeze
regales the senses. You feel a divine unison with the natural aura around
and get lost in thought and in time Suddenly, the light from an official
vehicle exploring the forest, rips apart the darkness It must have
unnerved something out there. The calls become shriller You feel jittery.
Sleep beckons the exhausted body but the mind is restless. Is it safe to
enjoy a sound sleep, wholly unguarded, unaware of the dangers lurking
outside? Others sleep off You walk up to the window and stare outside.
The night is getting darker A forest, indeed, has a life of its own and the
Kanha is unlike any forest you will ever see

Metal music has been the fastest growing form of rock around the world,
and is undergoing some remarkable evolution by fusing with other ethnic
forms of music: as a result, we have Scandinavian rock, death metal, and
even raga based Indian metal!
Meanwhile, another bunch of metal artists are constantly extending their
creativity and musicality into a more complex and experimental form of
rock called Progressive Rock, but thats a different story for a different
post!
So here they are: put up the volume and shake up your home!

FADE TO BLACK by METALLICA
The pioneers of the Thrash genre, the trend setters in combining
aggressive power chording with melodious acoustic guitar patterns, the
rulers of 80s metal music thats Metallica for you. Made during their
heydays when their feud with rival band Megadeth was at its boiling
point, Fade to black is the typical Metallica song, complete with anacoustic intro, brittle vocals, heavy riffing and a crazy shredding solo,
characteristic of Kirk Hammetts dexterous guitaring.

Remember that ambitious resolution you made this New Year was it
something like trying to shed some weight or bulk up your arms or legs?
Any good? No? Well, youre not alone. A majority of physique related
resolutions every New Year is more likely unfulfilled than successful. Ask
anybody and theyre going to fret about how they've failed at it the lastfew years!
Picture this January: All the gymnasiums are full, the roadsides filled
with swanky people on the run, sometimes twice every day, and theres
not a single park in town you cant find folks on their toes trying to shed
some pounds. Come February, and half of these just disappear. By
March, theyre all gone, having run out of the inspiration, the will and
resolve, and of
course, the
physical andmental energy
necessary for
these routines!
Most of these
people end up
quitting fitness
or bodybuilding
routines for
good, citing several reasons: theyre either tired or bored, or eveninjured. Halfway down the line, theyve lost the drive towards their
physical goals, and thats bad. Whats worse is that theyll soon find
themselves back at square one the very same state they tried not to be
and are bugged down by disappointment about all their wasted efforts
through their short lived routine. Now this is quite a crowd that needs
some address.
One has to bear in mind that fitness is not like money that can be
inventoried and leveraged at will, but more like food for the body,
required at regular intervals and in continuity. I mean, doesn't make
sense eating up enough food for a couple of days, does it? A fitness
routine, much like nutrition, is a mandate for every day, in some form or
the other, whether done as a conscious effort, like aerobics, or a by effort, like walking to somewhere. Which means heaving out a weeks
quota in a single session, or running 20 miles at a time in place of a 4
miles a day week is just not going to work if you were ever able to do
them, that is. The trick is to choose the limit wisely and focus on
regularity, rather than trying to ambitiously raise the bar.
Aptness and Properness are probably the most important aspects of
working out, yet least attended to. A workout session is, theoretically,
deliberate infliction of some damage to your muscle cells, so they can
recover to form stronger and bulkier tissues. Thats how it works out. What follows logically is that there is a cap on the damage you can do to
yourself a limit to which the body can recover. You cant just go about
heaving fifty pounds just because your favorite star does that in a movie!
An improper workout is simply damage and exasperation.
And keep the drive going! Your mind must picture what you intend to
achieve and constantly prod you towards that direction. This might seem
like straight out of one of those inspirational books but its the truth. It
does work! Watch inspiring movies, read about physique maniacs like
Arnold, Bruce Lee, and get a point or two from their methods, their goalsand the means to achieve them.
"Remember, every time you go work yourself out, you're going to look
better than you did ten minutes ago." Sylvester Stallone. I couldn't think
of a better way to end this.
Rev up your Routine!
