WHAT IS WORK INTEGRATED
LEARNING (WIL)?
Broadly speaking, Work Integrated Learning:
1. refers to any workplace based activity or program which integrates learning
with its application in the workplace
2. may vary in structure, format, duration, objectives and outcomes
3. is an important cornerstone of VU’s long term strategy and commitment to
ensure that ALL students obtain valuable Work Integrated Learning experience
as part of their studies
4. is where the “work” becomes the means by which learning occurs
5. is a key to students acquiring necessary skills and
Graduate Capabilities.

‘WIL’
• Focus on skills development,
career planning, industry and
workplace knowledge
• Supported by an intensive preparation
program
• Students enrol in appropriate “for credit” units
• Assessable tasks include student analysis of host organisation and industry, reflective journals, career planning and employer performance evaluations
• Students are visited and report regularly
• Students marketed to business community as “near-grad” – ready to learn and earn.

• Program encompasses all business
courses and major sectors (Accounting,
Marketing, “HRM”, Supply Chain Mgmt,
finance etc)
• The tourism and hospitality programs
include mandatory full-time paid Co-
operative Education for approx. one
year.
• Typically provides students with an annual
salary between $25,000 and $50,000
• Event Management course includes WIL
@ 150 contact hours

• About 1500 students participated in Work
Integrated Learning over past 5 yrs;
• Approx 70% of Co-operative Education students
obtain ongoing employment with their employer
(over last 3 years);
• Centre Co-ordinators source up to 80% of all
positions;
• In operation over 50 years at VU … (since 1962).

• Two programs: “Co-op” and “BIL” – vary in structure and length - from 150 hrs p/t casual, to 10 months full-time employment
• Can be anywhere … from Laverton to London or LA! ~ approx 25% of Hospitality & Tourism students undertake WIL overseas
• Co-op graduates are recruited earlier and have the relevant professional experience demanded by graduate employers
• Clients include businesses across the full spectrum, large corporations, public sector, SME’s, NGO’s and non-profits!
