Dream It, Build ItCHAPTER 1

From some piles of wood, pieces of roof, and stacks of bricks and stones, your home begins to take shape. Know the different types of building materials before you make your purchase.

HARDWOODHardwood is dense, dark, and can last for years. It’s the perfect material for your exteriors, so ash, mahogany, molave, and narra are the perfect choices. The most popular items made of hardwood are walls, doors, floor, and some pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables.

SOFTWOODOften lightweight and light in color, softwood is easy to match with the pieces you can find in your home. It might be less sturdy than hardwood, but this type is best used in creating fences, flooring, and cabinets. So go find materials in cedar, pine, and spruce.

CHIPBOARDChipboard is the product of wood chips and shavings. It’s inexpensive yet dense, and is often used for flooring and counter surface.

FIBERBOARDThis manufactured wood is known for its affordability without compromising its durability. Its flexibility makes it the perfect material for moulding, flooring, and cabinets.

WOOD WORKSKNOW WHICH TYPE OF WOOD IS MOST SUITABLE FOR YOUR HOME NEEDS

Wood is consistent in almost every household. From walls to floors, furniture pieces to home accents, it serves as a quintessential design element. Wood is proven to be one of the most versatile, efficient, and durable materials for homes, and having it incorporated in a space results into a natural vibe that is homey and cozy.

If you’re thinking of adding wood to your home, consider which type and where it is most suitable (bedroom or living room, ceiling or wall décor?). There are several types of wood, each different in texture, look, and purpose, so read up and pick your best bet.

Page 7: WILCON 1 · molave, and narra are the perfect choices. The most popular items made of hardwood are walls, doors, floor, and some pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables. SOFTWOOD

WILCON12 WILCON 13

PLYWOODPlywood is created by layers of thin pieces of wood to achieve a smooth, flat surface. You can mostly see floorings, partitions, cupboards, and shutters made of this wood type.

VENEERIf you’re feeling a bit fancy, you should consider getting veneer. Never mind if it costs more—it’s worth every buck. It’s often used in doors, parquet floors, and other high-end pieces of furniture.

HOW TO MAINTAIN WOOD SURFACES

While wood looks good even when it’s rustic and antiquated, a shiny wood surface also has its own beauty. Keep your wood surfaces clean and polished with these easy-does-it tips:

1. Start by lightly dusting off dirt on the wood surfaces by using a feather duster or a soft cloth.

2. Pour a small amount of wood surface cleaner on the soft cloth, and gently wipe the surface. In case a cleaner is not on hand, make a mixture of water and dishwashing soap or liquid. Dip the cloth in it. Make sure that the cloth is not dripping wet; it only needs to be in between damp and wet so as not to damage the wood’s natural finish.

3. Get another soft cloth, and dry the surface.

Whether you’re creating your dream home or just renovating your house to keep up with the times, you should never overlook the type of roofing to use. For one, a good roof can be a better line of defense against hot weather than air conditioning. Moreover, no matter how beautiful the inside of your home may be, a leaky roof can easily ruin it.

Before you buy, consider the following first: the material, the weight of the material, the requirements for installing and maintaining it, the cost, the lifespan, and of course, the look. For tropical weather, like in the Philippines, you have two great options:

METAL ROOFThis is the more popular type. This kind of roofing is lightweight, durable, and very long-lasting. It comes in panels and shingles and in aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and zinc. The only downside to this, though, is you may have to paint

them every once in a while so that they don’t rust or corrode once the rainy seasons start. It’s also relatively inexpensive which is why it is preferred by many.

TERRACOTTA OR SLATE TILESIf metal is not your thing, this is your next option. More popular in European and American homes, roof tiles come in a variety of designs that are visually appealing. When installed properly, this type of roof is enduring, great for any kind of weather. Roof tiles, though, are more expensive and will need extra framing as they are heavier than metal roofs.

Whatever type of roofing material you choose, never forget that your roof is fundamental to your home’s structural integrity. Investing time and money on the right roof for your abode will prove beneficial in the end.

HOW-TO: PICK THE RIGHT ROOF FOR YOUR HOMEYOUR CHOICE OF ROOF MATERIAL WILL NOT ONLY SERVE TO ENHANCE THE LOOK OF YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR BUT ALSO SERVE PROTECTION FROM VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS

If you want to add texture to your façade, stonework is an easy and convenient option. And using stone need not only be for the floor or path walk. A great design or color of stone can make both your interior and exterior walls pop with personality.

A common choice for many homeowners is brick. It’s sturdy, easy to install, and can even withstand high temperatures. You even have an option of not having brick walls painted since the colors rarely fade, making it virtually maintenance-free.

A popular choice for this are clay bricks. They come in a wide range of designs, shapes, and colors. So whether you’re looking to spruce up your living room or maybe add some final touches to your garden, you’ll have no problem finding the perfect clay brick.

If brick is not your thing, you can choose to go with artificial stone, which is significantly lighter and cheaper than brick. Made from cement, natural aggregates, and iron oxide pigments, these are formed using casts. Artificial stones are designed primarily for walls, having one flat side for easy installation. If you’re particularly handy, you can even install it yourself during quick renovations.

With proper maintenance, artificial stone walls can last a very long time. It’s easy to replace and repair, too!

Imagine a room without mouldings. It’s plain and quite boring, right? Mouldings may be subtle additions but they sure lend character to a room. There are different types of mouldings—pick one or all!

With these decorative trims, walls become a lot more interesting and styling gets more exciting. You may go for a subdued effect by painting them in the same color as your wall, giving a layered, textured effect that looks understatedly elegant. You may paint thin strips of mouldings in a bolder hue, to bring dashes of vibrance to the room; think a white room with orange mouldings. Or, go for a two-toned space using shades that are starkly different from one another, like brown walls and white mouldings and panelling.

What’s more, they don’t only come in plain designs, there are also styles with intricately carved patterns. And most of them are easy to install, making this one of the favorite DIY projects of many. It’s easy, and yet it can transform the look of a room. You can put mouldings anywhere in the home, but for visual coherence, make sure you apply the same moulding combinations across all the areas.

Mouldings are available in various materials, wood being the most popular option for its lightweight, easy-to-paint qualities. Alternatives include foam, rubber, plastic, and polyurethane. Before you start on your home building or renovation project, here’s a basic guide on its different types, to help you with your moulding shopping.

CASINGThis is for covering the gaps between the door or window frames and the walls. It basically outlines the door and windows, so it shouldn’t be too thick; this is typically two to three inches. Not only decorative, it also makes the door opening more stable.

THE PERFECT TRIMDON’T OVERLOOK THESE DETAILS AS THEY CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN A ROOM. HERE’S A GUIDE ON THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOULDINGS

Page 12: WILCON 1 · molave, and narra are the perfect choices. The most popular items made of hardwood are walls, doors, floor, and some pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables. SOFTWOOD

WILCON22 WILCON 23

CROWN MOULDINGAs the name suggests, this is the “crowning glory” in a room, an interesting architectural feature that creates the illusion of a lower ceiling for a cozier feel. Also known as cornice, this is what you put on the joint between the ceiling and the wall, giving that part a stylish transition. Related to this is the cove moulding, which has a concave profile, unlike the crown moulding which is available in both convex and concave profiles. Cove mouldings are available in narrow widths, whereas crown mouldings are only designed with wide styles; cove mouldings may be used on the top edges of a cabinet or the stair treads. CHAIR RAILAlso known as dado rail, this not only breaks the monotony of the wall—whether painted or covered with wallpaper—it can also help protect the wall from furniture pieces that may be pushed against it occasionally.

PICTURE RAILTypically installed on the wall just about the same height as the door, about seven to nine feet from the floor, this serves the same purpose as the chair rail. The only difference is that this one protects from damages that may be brought about by hanging picture frames, artworks, and other decorative elements, like plates, on the wall.

PANELLINGCreate further visual depth by covering walls partially or fully with panelling. The most popular style of panelling is wainscoting, typically applied halfway up the wall, between the baseboard and the chair rail; these mouldings are fashioned to look like square or rectangular frames adorning the walls.

BASEBOARDThis is the moulding used to line the joint between the floor and the wall, usually three to five inches wide.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF WINDOWS

CASEMENTThis type of window swings out through crank mechanism. This is best for living rooms and bedrooms.

AWNINGHinged at the top, this one opens outward and is usually paired with a stationary window either above or below it. This is best for the bathroom or the kitchen.

DOUBLE-HUNGThis consists of two vertical windows in a single frame. This is best for hallways or patios.

BAYBuilt to project outward from an outside wall, it is composed of three windows. This may be applied on different areas of the home that jut out to the façade.

STATIONARYThis type of window is fixed and cannot be opened but offers maximized view of the outdoors. This is best for living rooms and bedrooms.

A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITYEXPLORE THE DIFFERENT TREATMENTS THAT WOULD SUIT CERTAIN TYPES OF WINDOWS

The importance of having windows in a space cannot be emphasized enough. It’s essential not only to let natural light through but also to provide ventilation in a space. Its mere existence is energy-efficient in more ways than one. And just as there are different types of windows, there are likewise different treatments for it.

Page 14: WILCON 1 · molave, and narra are the perfect choices. The most popular items made of hardwood are walls, doors, floor, and some pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables. SOFTWOOD

WILCON26 WILCON 27

GLIDINGIt has two sashes. For other types, both sash glide horizontally while others only have one sash capable of gliding.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF WINDOW TREATMENTSSHUTTERSThese look beautiful whether from the inside or outside, and lends a stylish architectural detail and coastal vibes to a space. Fuss-free and with literally no strings attached, this is a smart choice for the kitchen as it complements the busy activity in the area.

WOOD BLINDSThis durable window treatment has a timelessly stylish style that complements other key wooden elements in a space. There are also versions

of these in faux wood, which are a good choice for kitchen where temperature varies depending on the activity in it. And since stains are unavoidable in this area, this easy-to-clean window treatment would be perfect.

ROMAN SHADESMade of fabric with horizontal folds, this style adds a nice detail to the interior. It serves its purpose well in a manner so convenient and easy to use. Its soft and sophisticated touch would fit the atmosphere of the living room.

CELLULAR SHADESThis is probably the most energy-efficient window treatment because it has insulating properties that work well in the living room or the bedroom.

DRAPERY Arguably the most popular of all is the drapery. With so many designs to choose from, this functional element can sometimes even dictate the whole look of a space. You may use it on its own or combine with other window treatments. Conceal drapery hardware with valance. Opt for drapery to create drama in the dining room, where family gatherings usually take place.

DOOR ESSENTIALSTAKE TIME CHOOSING THE HARDWARE THAT GOES INTO YOUR DOOR. READ UP ON THE DIFFERENT TYPES AND FINISHES AVAILABLE FOR YOUR PICKING

Door knobs serve way more than a decorative purpose. They provide security to your home and its different areas, so choosing the right one for your door type is of utmost importance. The knobs for the entry door are different from those of the interior doors, and there are other factors that must be considered.

Before you go to the Wilcon branch that is nearest to you, here are some considerations first: the backset (the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole), bore hole and cross bore (the diameter of the hole in the door), and the door thickness.

DIFFERENT STYLES OF DOOR HARDWARE

DOOR KNOBSThey feature a latch that disengages when the knob is turned. Their lock function prevents the latch from getting disengaged when accessed from the outside without a key.

DOOR LEVERSUnlike in the case of knobs, these don’t function with a twisting motion. Instead, the latch gets disengaged when the lever is pushed down. These types may be locked through the thumb turn or push button from the inside.

DEADBOLTSThese are available in single-cylinder or double-cylinder types. The single-cylinder needs a key to unlock from the outside but it can unlock with a small knob or thumb turn on the inside. The double-cylinder type, meanwhile, requires a key to unlock from the outside and the inside.

HANDLESETSA classic and bold decorative touch, these are perfect for an entry door. They include an exterior handle, a thumb-operated latch, and a matching deadbolt.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF HARDWARE FINISHESAs minute detail as this may be, your choice of finish for your door hardware can make or break the overall appearance of your home. Its finish needs to complement the style of the rest of the house. Brushed metal, polished and satin nickel, and steel have that contemporary look. Chrome exudes a modern feel. Brass has a reflective quality that complements most interior design styles, especially the luxe appeal of a Hollywood Regency-themed home. Brass and its antiquated feel would fit a traditional or rustic home. Bronze, pewter, and black iron would typically suit an industrial space. Copper is versatile and can suit styles from rustic to contemporary.

FLOOR CARE 101THE BEST SOLUTIONS FOR PROTECTING YOUR FLOORS FROM SCRATCHES AND OTHER DAMAGES

When it comes to floors, how careful are you in making sure they stay in tip-top condition? Scratches and other damages are inevitable, what with everyday movements inside your home—your kids playing around, some minor changes in furniture placements, or even a push of your chair in the dining table are all contributing factors.

Apart from the usual carpets placed under furniture pieces, there are actually these clever things called furniture pads. These are small, simple-to-use solutions that are hidden from plain sight yet they make such a big difference. These materials that you put on the bottom of your furniture legs come in different types. Read about them here.

TAP-ON OR NAIL-ON PADSThese pads are attached to the furniture leg with a small nail or screw to secure its place. There are different materials used but most commonly used is a felt pad, as it easily glides without leaving marks on your floor. Be careful in installing these pads, though, as an exposed nail or screw can do the very damage you are avoiding.

Page 18: WILCON 1 · molave, and narra are the perfect choices. The most popular items made of hardwood are walls, doors, floor, and some pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables. SOFTWOOD

WILCON34 WILCON 35

SELF-ADHESIVE PADSIt’s the most convenient pad you can use—just peel and stick, and done! It’s made of rubber and the least expensive of all! Just be careful as the adhesive doesn’t last as long, so regularly check if the pads already need replacement.

SLIP-ON PADSProbably the most convenient choice among the three types, slip-on pads are made to fit a furniture leg so it won’t easily fall off. No need to worry about regularly changing the adhesive or accidentally scratching your floor because of screws. Its rubber or soft plastic material ensures floor is in good condition.

SHOULD YOU USE A RUG PAD?Ideally, yes. A rug pad prevents the area rug from slipping and reduces tripping hazards. Byusing it, you also get to diminish your rug’s wear and tear. With it underneath, it serves as ashock absorber. The other side of some rugs are rough, perhaps to serve more grip, but theycould also scratch or damage the floor. The rug pad adds a layer of protection for the floor.

DIY PROJECT 1: CHEVRON PATTERN WOODEN HEADBOARDCREATE A STATEMENT IN THE BEDROOM WITH A HEADBOARD CUSTOMIZED TO YOUR DESIGN OF CHOICE

PROCEDURE:1. Examine the plywood. Measure

it and mark to make four equal squares where the wood pieces will be placed.

2. With the help of a pocket hole jig, frame all sides of the headboard.

3. Cut small triangle pieces that will fit the top and bottom parts of the board, then cut the rest about 1/4″long then trim them down 1/16 (about half a saw blade width) at a time to ensure a precise fit. Cut all the ends at 45º angle. Stain the cut pieces in different brown finishes to achieve the “reclaimed wood” effect.

4. Lay the plywood on the floor. Start placing the pieces orderly using wood glue. Work your way towards the center on every side until you fill in the whole board.

PROCEDURE:1. Start by removing an old

cabinet’s doors, hardware, and face frame.

2. Using the removed shelving, create a cubby system.

3. Fit the shelving in the middle of cabinet. Place two garbage cans on the gaps on each side.

4. Instead of buffing or sanding the exterior, use the leftover scraps to cover the exterior. Once done, use the finger board to cut bulky trim pieces and apply where needed.

5. Time to build the door! According to your liking, cut rails, tiles, and grooves, drill pocket holes, attach cleat and hook to the back

of the door, and fasten joints on its bottom part to add to the panel. Prime and paint the back of the doors before installing them using hinges. Add castors and legs to the cabinet. Then proceed to sand, prime, and paint the finished product.

6. Add cleat and hook behind the door.

7. The lip of the garbage can should rest on the cleat. Connect a chain from the interior of the cabinet and connect it to the door.

8. Add topware and hardware, like door handles and pulls, and finish off by attaching a towel bar on the side.

Great ventilation inside the home is more important than you think. A great exhaust fan can improve the quality of the air inside your home, which is very important when you have pets and kids. Stale air with pollutants can easily cause health issues in many people.

Not all exhaust fans function the same way. Here are some of the more common types.

WALL MOUNTED EXHAUST FANThis is the easiest type of exhaust fan to install. If you’re planning on doing a bit of home improvement, this type of fan is ideal. The fan is installed to an external wall and allows the air inside to exit straight through the fan itself.

EXTERIOR EXHAUST FANSimilar to wall mounted exhaust fans, this type of fan pulls out the air inside the home and expels it outside. The main difference is that the noise emitted by the fan is all from the outside so it’s quieter than a wall mounted fan.

EXHAUSTING YOUR OPTIONSGET THE RIGHT EXHAUST FAN FOR THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF YOUR HOME

CEILING MOUNTED EXHAUST FANFor better airflow in a room upstairs, consider installing a ceiling mounted fan. This removes the air inside through a hole in the ceiling, most often connected to an attic.

KITCHEN EXHAUST FANUsually installed above the stove, this helps in reducing or completely eliminating the smell during the cooking process. For condos or similar small spaces, this is essential.

BATHROOM EXHAUST FANSmaller and more affordable than most exhaust fans, this is good for ensuring that moisture is eliminated inside the bathroom. This is essential if you wish to avoid mildew inside the bathroom.

INLINE EXHAUST FANMore complex than the wall mounted fans, an inline exhaust fan is connected directly to a home’s air ducts in order to pump out all the old, stale air, replacing it with fresher air all throughout your home.

Imagine a well-styled space, where everything seems to be cleverly put together. Such a space needs to be outfitted with proper lighting. More than the decorative benefit, the right lighting can make your home homier, more elegant, or more comfortable to stay at.

But, as with most products, there’s no one-size-fits-all rule for lighting. Not all fixtures suit the different areas of the home. They serve specific purposes and must therefore be thoughtfully chosen—more so because how often do you change your lighting fixture? Not often, right? It’s because they’re meant to be installed or placed in a space for a long time, only to be touched for occasional bulb replacements.

Make sure the right type brightens up your space. There are typically three types: ambient, task or accent. Mix and match the different lighting fixtures with the different areas in your home:

CHANDELIERWith its grand design, this type of ambient lighting usually becomes the focal point in a room. It’s suspended from the ceiling, with the light directed upward. It’s perfect to place it over a table in a dining room. Setting one up by the foyer also creates a grand entrance feel.

THE RIGHT LIGHTPROPER LIGHTING CAN ENHANCE THE LOOK AND AMBIANCE OF THE ROOM

CEILINGAs the name suggests, this one is mounted directly on the ceiling, with the light bulb covered in glass or plastic shade. This is perfect for general areas such as the living room, bedrooms as well as children’s rooms. It may also be used as a lighting option for the bedroom. Combine this with indirect ambient light that can be dimmed.

WALL SCONCESMounted on the wall, these can provide ambient or task lighting. Their lights are directed upwards or downwards. Set up wall sconces on both sides of the bed for a space-saving lighting solution (no need for a lamp shade on top of the bedside table) or the mirror in your bathroom.

PENDANTProviding ambient or task lighting, this fixture suspended from the ceiling is best placed over a table in the dining area as well as the kitchen island. Make sure your lights are bright enough for you to see the food being prepared and eaten.

DESK LAMPThis lighting is best placed atop the table where you do work-related tasks, because you can adjust it to better focus on the task at hand. Combine this with general lighting.

FLOOR AND TABLE LAMPThese lamps usually direct their light downward. These are perfect for the living room and a reading nook; they double as stylish accents in a space.

WALL OR CEILING FLOODLIGHTSThese are great options for staircases and hallways. This is also the right choice when you want to highlight a particular artwork hung on the wall.

It is essential to find the bulb that will best suit the different parts of the house. Aside from ensuring it matches the house’s theme, its size and shape should provide ample lighting wherever you choose to place it. Here are the types of bulbs that have illuminated our homes in the past and the most preferred and often used one today.

INCANDESCENTThis was the most common type of bulb and was best used in rooms that needed lights with a high level of brightness. It had warm light, which, according to studies, made it psychologically appealing and inviting. However, its energy came off more as heat, making it less energy-efficient. With this, incandescent bulbs became less popular with the birth of more energy-efficient ones.

HALOGENIt was basically an improved version of the incandescent, made to last longer and more energy-efficient than its precedent. It was more expensive and had the tendency to heat faster, though, but it was preferred for its natural lighting or daylight vibe.

FLUORESCENTFor indoors and large areas of the house like the basement, the fluorescent was the best bet! This type produced a small amount of heat, and

THE EVOLUTION OFLIGHTINGTHE BULB TYPES THAT ILLUMINATE A SPACE

came in warm, cool, and special-colored ones. It lasted longer, too, so you would get the light and savings for its worth.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS (CFLS)The CFL was created to be more compact—therefore, it provided your lighting needs minus the added space. It also lasted ten-times longer and was known for its energy-saving quality. This type was ideal for the kitchen, as it was best placed in recessed spaces of the house.

LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE (LED)By now you know that LED is the way to go. It is bright, lessens energy consumption, and now comes in different colors—so go ahead and pick which ones to match the mood of the room you’re placing it into. The best thing about LED bulbs is it can be used almost everywhere—in the outdoors, recessed areas, landscape, and even as decoration.

TILED TO PERFECTIONHERE ARE THE MAJOR TYPES OF TILES YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM

They may be for stepping on but don’t look down on choosing the right tiles for your home. Having the right design or type of tilework can prove to be very beneficial, no matter if it’s for a new or a renovated home.

CERAMIC TILESWhen you think of tiles, the ceramic variety is probably the first to spring to mind. They’re a great choice for floors even though most people think ceramic tiles are just for the kitchen backsplashes or bathroom walls. Available in various designs and shapes, you can actually use it for the entire house. Plus, ceramic tiles are very durable and easy to clean.

WILCON60 WILCON 61

NATURAL GRANITE TILESMore commonly used by slabs for kitchen countertops and backsplashes, this type of tiles is durable and can actually lend subdued elegance to bathrooms or living rooms as well with its uniquely patterned or speckled look and polished finish. Its natural resistance to moisture and stain-proof quality make it a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms. It’s easy to clean, so it also works best on high-traffic areas like living rooms and hallways.

VINYL TILESThis is the cheaper choice but that doesn’t mean it’s inferior. Gone are the days of ugly vinyl flooring. In its place are high quality vinyl tiles that mimic the look of high-end flooring like wood panels and porcelain but are significantly lighter in weight. They can be easily installed and replaced.

MOSAIC TILESAvailable in glass, resin, metal or natural stone, these tiles lend a statement-making texture to a wall or a floor. A versatile tile type, it is a popular choice for bathroom and kitchen backsplash. Mixed with other titles, their commonly intricate design stands out and makes a great focal point in a space. The unpredictably stylish pattern the mosaic tiles create gives the room more character.

Wilcon has all these tiles available in stores, with products both locally sourced and exported from foreign countries such as China, Indonesia, Italy, and Spain.

Tiles so pretty, such as these colorful and patterned Machuca tiles, can have other places in your home apart from the floor. All you need is creativity and some DIY skills, to revamp these pieces and create something new that will add an interestingly clever touch to your home.

Here are a few suggestions on how you can give those leftover tiles an afterlife–bring out your tools and let’s get crafty!

COASTERSMake these statement dining essentials in a few easy steps! Cut scrapbook paper into squares, just slightly smaller than your tile choice. Brush some Mod Podge on the tile and stick the scrapbook paper square on it. Brush another layer of Mod Podge over and leave for several hours to dry. Apply a coat of spray acrylic sealer once done to make the end product waterproof.

PLANTERSGive those plants a lovely makeover! Take a wooden planter box, cut the tiles to fit its size, and cover the whole box. Leave for 24 hours to ensure the tiles to stick.

Sure, it’s made of some very hard material, but that doesn’t mean your granite countertop doesn’t deserve some TLC. It will not take much effort, but proper maintenance of your countertop can ensure use for years to come.

1. Spills and crumbs? Just wipe them down. No need for any specialized chemicals. A well-sealed granite countertop is relatively impervious to bacteria.

2. But if you really need to clean it, instead of using abrasive cleaners, liquids, and sponges, reach for a soft washcloth and some mild and warm soapy water. Acidic cleaners or chemicals will dull and destroy the sealant that’s keeping your granite countertop shiny and new.

3. To periodically disinfect your granite countertops, make a water and isopropyl

alcohol solution. A 50-50 mix of water and 91% isopropyl alcohol will help in disinfecting the granite as well as removing soap residue, and restoring shine. Spray the alcohol solution directly onto the granite and allow it to sit for 3-5 minutes. Rinse it thoroughly with water afterwards.

4. Never forget to use a microfiber cloth to dry your granite countertop. A microfiber cloth or soft terry cloth towel helps avoid streaking or making unnecessary scratches all over your countertop.

5. Finally, avoid sitting or standing on your countertop. It may look very tough but once damaged, it will be hard to repair cracks once they start to appear. Test the seals at least every three years and reapply granite sealer as you see fit.

TOILET BASICSTHE TOILET IS A DAILY ESSENTIAL, SO FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, PICK THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOUR HOME

You use it more than once every day so you should not overlook its importance. The right toilet for your home is as essential as the perfect bed or the best stove. And you might be surprised, there are actually several types of toilets to choose from. Gone are the days of the old water closet. Take a gander below and see which porcelain throne befits your home.

TWO-PIECE TOILETSThese are your standard, traditional toilets. The tank or cistern and the bowl are two separate pieces, which are connected with plumbing once installed. Installation of this kind of toilets is fairly easy and any decent plumber will be able to do it as well as do any necessary repairs in the future.

CLOSE-COUPLED TOILETSA popular variant of the two-piece toilet, close-coupled toilets still have a separate tank and bowl but have a very streamlined design so they take up less space.

ONE-PIECE TOILETSUnlike its two-piece brother, one-piece toilets come complete as one part so they are more durable, space-saving, and easier to clean with less nooks and crannies for bacteria to thrive on. Some actually consider it as a vast improvement to two-piece toilets. It is more expensive, though.

WALL-HUNG TOILETSIf you’re looking for true space-saving toilet solutions, the wall-hung toilet is the best choice. As the name suggests, these toilets are mounted on the wall, with the tank hidden behind it. This is ideal for new homes or major renovations. This toilet is also very stylish and may become a real feature point within your bathroom.

BACK TO WALL TOILETSSimilar to wall-hung toilets, which have concealed cisterns, back to wall toilets are space-saving and look very contemporary in any type of bathroom. The main difference between the two is the toilet bowl position. Back to wall toilets still have bowls connected to the bathroom floor unlike the former that has a gravity-defying aesthetic. These also tend to be more expensive but are said to be one of the most comfortable.

SMART TOILETSLastly, you have these toilets from the future. From heated seats to automatic bidet functionality to background flushing music to warm-air dryers, smart toilets are the most functional and most comfortable among all types of toilets. Price-wise, though, be prepared to spend a lot for a chance to sit at the throne from the future.

CHAPTER 6: Topic 2 – Bathtubs

FREESTANDING BATHTUBFrom the term itself, these are the ones that aren’t connected to any walls or surfaces. If you have a particularly large space in your master bathroom, this is a perfect choice. You’ll have mobility and freedom to move with freestanding bathtubs. You can choose from claw foot bathtubs, which have visible legs that evoke classic luxury, or slipper bathtubs, which have a more ergonomic and modern design.

ALCOVE BATHTUBIf you have a more limited space to fit your tub, an alcove bathtub is an ideal choice. This type of bathtub fits in a three-walled enclosure which can accommodate a tub-shower combo. Price-wise, this is the most economical and is a good choice for big families.

PLATFORM OR DROP-IN BATHTUBNot quite as freestanding as claw foot or slipper bathtubs but just as luxurious, drop-in bathtubs are placed within a built-up deck structure. Many whirlpool and air bathtubs use this type of drop-in installation.

UNDERMOUNT BATHTUBThis is pretty much like the drop-in type, but this one has its rim covered by a surrounding deck of stone or tiles.

CORNER BATHTUBIf you’re going for a truly grandiose look, nothing is as epic as a corner bathtub. These types of tubs need a lot of space but for good reason! This is not a bathtub for the kids. Corner bathtubs can adequately accommodate couples so keep this in mind if you’re looking for a romantic bathtub option for your home.

BATHROOM INDULGENCEFIND OUT WHICH BATHTUB SUITS YOUR LIFESTYLE AND PREFERENCE

As satisfying as a cold shower can be, nothing beats a soak in a bathtub after a long day, to wash all the stress away. So if you’ve been thinking of purchasing one but you’re just apprehensive because of the many options on hand, here’s a quick rundown of all the basic types of tubs, depending on the manner of installation.

Bathtubs also come in different colors, finishes, and shapes such as oval, rectangle, corner, and cube. They can be made out of various materials like cast iron, enamel on steel, acrylic, composite, cultured marble, fiberglass gelcoat, and even wood.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the options. To streamline your choices, consider first and foremost the size and layout of the bathroom where you’re planning to place the tub in as well as your bathtub requirements.

SMALL SPACE, BIG IMPACTTHE POWDER ROOM GETS A LOT OF TRAFFIC ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE GUESTS AT HOME, SO MAKE SURE TO CREATE A GOOD IMPRESSION WITH IT

When guests go to your house, they often don’t get to see the rest of your house—unless you indulge them with a little home tour. Aside from the entertaining area, it’s the powder room that they will most likely find themselves in at certain points during the party, so you would want to make their stay there as comfortable and as pleasant as possible. Nail the look and ambiance of your powder room with these guides and reminders.

DECIDE ON A THEMEThe look of your powder room need not be aligned with the rest of your home. If anything, it can even be totally different. Give it some personality and don’t just keep it plain and boring.

PICK A STATEMENT VANITYThe powder room is all about the vanity sink, so make sure it’s the star of the space. There are a lot of creative styles available in the market now, so pick one that stays true to the aesthetic of the entire room and doesn’t take up too much square footage.

CREATE A FOCAL POINT WITH A STYLISH MIRRORMirror is an essential item in the powder room, so don’t just choose any style. Pick one that is especially complementary with the vanity sink.

STYLIZE THE SPACEDress up the walls with patterned tiles or wallpaper. Pick a complementary style of floor tiles. Add mouldings. Put up artworks on the walls and other trinkets on the top of the vanity, the toilet, or shelf.

PAY ATTENTION TO PROPER LIGHTINGPut a statement lighting fixture, like a chandelier if the look of your room is luxe and glam. More than the aesthetic, ensure that it lights up the space well. Add sconces or pendant lights by the mirror.

STOCK UP ON TOILET ESSENTIALSPut toilet paper, soap, lotion, and sanitizer. Add a few reading materials.

IT’S A DAILY ESSENTIAL, SO HAVING THE RIGHT LAVATORY FOR YOUR BATHROOM OR POWDER ROOM IS IMPORTANT

LOVE YOUR LAVATORY

Picking out the best type of lavatory for you shouldn’t be tricky. Pick the right one with the perfect mix of aesthetics and functionality:

PEDESTAL SINKIt takes very little space, thus avoiding the cramped feeling inside the bathroom. It easily fits in any given space, regardless of its shape and size. Bonus: It looks neat and nifty—the floor-mount conceals all those hardware and plumbing—you won’t need much to style it with.

FREE-STANDING VANITIESA free-standing vanity is your pedestal sink plus a vanity cabinet. Imagine the space-saving quality of the former, with a generous space for all your essentials in one place.

WALL-MOUNTED SINKBecause this hangs from the wall, you still retain the foot space below the sink. Though you don’t have any additional storage, it gives

the illusion of space in small bathrooms.

VESSEL SINK VANITYAdd more character with a vessel sink vanity. Although this type can be quite expensive and can take up more space, its various styles give you limitless options of what suits your bathroom or powder room best.

DROP-IN SINKIt has a lip or “rim” at the top that helps set it in place on the countertop. Washrooms with contemporary designs often use top mount sinks as the sink because it’s a focal point in itself.

UNDERMOUNT SINKIf you prefer classy and contemporary, this is your lavatory soulmate. It might require an expensive setup as it needs a hard countertop like granite or marble, but the end result will surely impress.

CREATE YOUR DREAMBATHROOMALEN ALBAN, COUNTRY MANAGER AT LIXIL WATER TECHNOLOGY, SHARES TIPS ON BUILDING THIS PRIVATE SPACE WITH BOTH STYLE AND COMFORT IN MIND

It is in the bathroom where you spend some alone time to rejuvenate and wash all the stress away from your body. For some people, this space serves as the perfect venue during times when they want to take a step back from their busy lifestyle. For this purpose, the bathroom’s design must be elevated to one that integrates stylish and comfortable elements best suited for rest and relaxation. Factors to look out for include the essential fixtures, the mood boosters, and the accents.

Alban points out that a dream bathroom is one that has “cool and modern features and fixtures,” “mood lighting,” and an “elegant design”—something that’s basically “as comfortable as possible.” Here are some tips for achieving that dream bathroom:

1. Look for inspirations. Today, when anything and everything you can think of is on social media, it’s easy to look for pegs that will help make your idea more concrete. There are literally millions of pictures that you can search online. But Alban recommends that you actually visit a Wilcon store where products are displayed and presented in vignettes or mock-up settings, “to have a better appreciation of the materials to be used.” “Wilcon has the widest selection of quality products in the market,” he adds.

2. Conceptualize the theme of your bathroom. Pick a certain style that resonates with you the most. It’s important to decide on this early on, so it can serve as your design guide throughout the building

process. If you’re working with a designer, share with him “the feeling you want to have whenever you’re using the bathroom,” so he can factor that in when helping you choose the items that will go into the space—each and every element must work towards a cohesive look. 3. Source and select the right materials. “Once you are in the store, you will find abundant choices. Sometimes, too many choices,” Alban points out. With your chosen theme, shopping should become easier because it streamlines your options and helps with decision-making. The key pieces you must opt for are those that look timeless and have great features that will prove to be beneficial for you for a long time. Here are the factors to consider, according to Alban:

Quality. Choose brands that are known for excellent products, specifically those with international credence.

Design. Go for a timeless look, something that won’t look dated even for 10 to 15 years.

Technology. Bathroom products these days are now equipped with hi-tech features. There are also digital features, like showers with lights, sounds and steam controlled by an iPhone. The “spalet,” which is basically a spa toilet that comes with automatic features which keep hygiene level very high, is also worth checking out; it also comes with music, deodorizer, auto flush, auto bidet, and lighting!

Sustainability. Most of the fixtures and fittings now come earth-friendly, so make sure to consider these. We all need to do our part in saving our planet.

SINCE SHOWER IS UTILIZED EVERYDAY, YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR PICK MEETS YOUR PREFERENCE AND REQUIREMENT

LET IT RAIN

Whether you’re raring to go start your day or you’re about to wrap up a very long day, nothing quite refreshes as much as a trip to the shower. That’s why, it’s important that you find the perfect showerhead for your bathroom. There are so many options in the market today, so here’s a quick rundown of the types of showerheads you’re bound to encounter while shopping.

WALL MOUNT SHOWERHEADAs the name implies, this showerhead are mounted to the wall in a fixed, stationary position. this is the most common type of showerheads and usually comes as a single spray shower. The flow of water is often concentrated with solid water pressure. It’s also the most affordable showerhead option.

HAND HELD SHOWERHEADInstead of being directly attached to a wall, a hand held showerhead has a long hose, which makes it detachable, very mobile, and flexible. You’ll be able to rinse hard-to-reach areas with hand held showerheads. This is also perfect if you have small children or even pets.

SLIDING BAR SHOWERHEADSimilar to the hand held showerhead, this type is attached to long hose for flexibility. But because of the adjustable bar, the height of the sliding bar showerhead can be adjusted without needing to hold it. It’s a hands-free option for families that have members with drastically different heights. For parents who share the same bathroom with their kids, this is the ideal choice.

RAIN SHOWERHEADDesigned to mimic the refreshing feeling of rainfall, a rain showerhead is becoming the popular choice for bathrooms with contemporary design. This is commonly a large showerhead, which is mounted on the ceiling. It can either be concealed or exposed, depending on your preference. Unlike a single spray shower, which has strong water pressure, a rain showerhead sprays water in a more even fashion. It’s a very good choice if you’re looking to take a break after a long day.

PANEL OR BODY SPRAY SHOWERHEADIf you need a shower experience that closely mimics a good massage, a body spray showerhead is the one for you. This type of showerhead has multiple swivel heads, which are mounted on the wall and target multiple body levels. Some even have an option of adding as many swivel heads as you’d like. Panel showerheads spray in multiple directions to hit multiple areas. Body spray showerheads usually have different settings including a water massage feature.

KNOW THE BEST TYPE OF FAUCET THAT WOULD SUIT YOUR KITCHEN NEEDS

FAUCET TALK: KITCHEN SINK

A great kitchen sink needs two important things: one is the basin for cleaning and preparation and the other is the perfect faucet to make sure your life in the kitchen is easier. Don’t mistake faucets as a sort of one-size-fits-all type of thing. There’s a right type of faucet for each kind of sink.

PULL-DOWN FAUCETThis is one of the more basic types of kitchen faucets. The pull-down in the name indicates the direction of the handle, which controls both water flow and temperature. It’s easy to install and use when doing the dishes or cleaning produce. This has a generally shorter spout so it’s great for installing in kitchens with limited space.

PULL-OUT FAUCETPull-out faucets are generally the same as pull-down faucets. The biggest difference is the direction of the handle, which can be pulled out directly towards you and the main construction of the body, which has a straighter line compared to the pull-down faucet’s slightly curved body. If you have a

deep sink, the tall height of a pull-out faucet’s spout is perfect for rinsing or filling dishes.

DUAL-HANDLE FAUCETUnlike the first two faucets, the dual-handle type has a more classical design. Each handle or lever is meant to control either hot or cold water. Some people prefer this type of faucet as it is easier to control the temperature when using the kitchen sink.

SEPARATE SPRAY FAUCETIf you’re constantly doing the dishes, having a separate spray faucet is the ideal choice. This faucet has a separate handle with a trigger that can activate a spraying motion inside the sink. The separate spray is attached to a flexible hose which makes cleanup a breeze.

GO ALL WHITEBefore even going through the color spectrum, why not consider going all white? You can paint the walls, ceiling, and trims white. It will work fairly easily because white is very versatile and will always go with every piece of furniture, carpeting, window treatments, and rugs that you have in the room. But if you don’t want to get too drastic white, you can also use some accent colors to contrast with the white walls.

TRY YELLOWIf white is just too bland for your taste, using yellow also achieves the same effect. Avoid using very dark or very bright yellows, instead, go for a lemony or a very creamy shade of yellow. Contrasting it with darker colors (like green for a citrus feel) will make your small room both spacious and bursting with personality.

THE RIGHT SHADES FOR SMALL SPACESCREATE THE ILLUSION OF A BIGGER SPACE WITH THE HELP OF PAINT

POWER UP WITH PASTELA safe choice for rooms, especially when you want to add a feminine touch, is a pastel color such as pink, peach, or lavender. Pastel colors bounce light back so they brighten and lighten a small space. If you feel they might be too overwhelming on their own, adding creamy beige colors for the trim and window and door frames will help tone it down.

SATURATED HUES CAN WORK TOOYou don’t always have to forego personality for space. Strong colors with saturated hues can still be used for small spaces. All you need to do is balance out that strong color with softer neutrals such as gray or beige so that the room doesn’t look overwhelming. If you’re not yet sure how a strong color might affect a room, start by painting just one prominent wall. Try painting a wall around a focal point feature, like the bed or sofa, so you see how the color influences the room’s objects and natural lighting.

If you have a particularly small room in the house, one of the best ways to make it look bigger is through the use of colors. Choosing the right paint for your small rooms can add an illusion of depth, making your rooms more comfortable and more inviting.

But there is more to it than just using light colors. You don’t have to feel limited with color selection. Here are some essential tips and tricks for using paint color to maximize a small space.

GO FOR SAME COLORED WALLS AND TRIMAnother neat trick to remember when painting small rooms, especially with low ceiling, is to paint the walls and trim the same color. By doing so, your ceilings appear to be taller because it breaks between the trim and the wall is no longer visible.

CONNECT ROOMS WITH COLORIf the small space you’re about to paint is connected or opens up to another room, a practical solution is to utilize the same color scheme from the other room into your small space. Maintaining the visual flow between rooms or even all throughout the home helps to create depth.

LIVING ROOM = FLATThis type of sheen hides imperfection and diffuses light, perfect for the living room setup as ample lighting is necessary in this area. It has a smooth and rich finish that makes applied color pop, so rest assured your choice of blue or yellow (or whatever hue it is) wall would look nicely on the backdrop.

DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN = EGGSHELLThe eggshell may look matte, but the hint of sheen up close is undeniable (imagine the actual eggshell—you get the picture). It’s this quality that makes this longer lasting than other finishes. It does show your walls’ flaws, but just a swipe of a good primer will lessen this, so don’t forget to prep it before working on with color.

BATHROOM = SEMI-GLOSSIf the glossy finish is too shiny for your taste, go for semi-gloss instead. It provides the same protection from moisture and drips as its counterpart, and is easy to clean, which is highly needed in this area.

BEDROOM = SATINIt’s slightly glossier than eggshell, and finishes off as silky with a touch of glow—the kind of luminescence you’ll need in your personal den. This sheen is durable enough which makes it perfect for your regular bedroom clean-up scrub without the peeling.

THE BEST PAINT FOR EVERY AREA OF THE HOMEBECAUSE NOT ALL PAINTS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR ALL AREAS OF THE HOME, HERE’S A HELPFUL GUIDE FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAINT

Choosing the right paint for your home is pretty much the same as the selection of the theme of the house or which furniture pieces go well together. Paint should be well-chosen, to ensure it lasts.

Apart from the colors, the finish is the next thing to consider when picking your paint, and it varies depending on the part of the home. Matte, semi-gloss, satin, and other paints have their own purpose, so here’s a list of which works best with which.

ULTRA VIOLET, A BLUE-BASED PURPLE, HAS BEEN DECLARED THE “COLOR OF THE YEAR.” HOW DO YOU WORK AROUND THIS BOLD AND VIBRANT SHADE? HERE ARE SOME TIPS

COLOR COMBINATION

Every year, a new color du jour is announced, to influence design choices for the rest of the year. But just because a shade has been tagged as such doesn’t mean you should renovate your entire home to ride onto that trend, most especially if the color doesn’t speak about your or your family’s personality.

There are different ways to bring the “Color of the Year” to your home, and the number one way to do so is by updating the color of the walls. You need not change the paint of your entire home; you may just choose one side to transform into an accent wall.

Wilcon’s paint suppliers include Boysen, Davies, Nippon, Bondo, Bronco, Dr. Seal, Dynatron, Flexseal, Flintkote, Globeconsu, Manor, Nation, Nikko, Rain or Shine, and RJ. Some of them have several options that are in the family of Ultra Violet, which are as exciting to play around with.

SPACE-SAVING KITCHEN APPLIANCESWITH THE BOOM IN CONDO DWELLERS TODAY COMES THE DEMAND NOT ONLY FOR SPACE-SAVING PIECES OF FURNITURE BUT ALSO KITCHEN APPLIANCES

Think of the luxuries of living high above the cityscape—the view of the metro down below and the convenience of everything you need within a few footsteps away. Settling in a condominium does bring in a lot of perks. But if you grew up in a house where space is everything, moving in to a smaller dwelling might make you feel cramped. Good thing, space-saving items were created, and they’re there for a reason: One, to make life more convenient for those with limited room, and two, to make your home more efficient and organized.

Typically, condo units come with small kitchens, and while condos are usually located in places that are near malls and restaurants, still, nothing beats a home-cooked meal. Having limited workspace shouldn’t stop you from enjoying cooking and, of course, eating what you cooked. There are several burner, oven, hob, and microwave options available now that won’t eat up too much space and are packed with amazing features. What’s more, they may be compact but sure don’t sacrifice style and quality.

Hob By HamdenThis hob has a cast iron pan support, one rapid burner, one auxiliary burner, and electric ignition.

Sure, cooking is fun, but cleaning after everyone has enjoyed the meal is the part that many people dread the most. How do you clean your kitchen appliances? It’s seriously tricky, because you need to make sure you’re using materials that are safe and chemical-free; after all, it’s where the food we eat are cooked. So, here are some tips: For the Hob:1. Remove food residues on the surface,

so you can focus your attention on getting rid of the stains.

2. Use a cleaner specifically created for ceramic and glass hobs. Put it on the surface and let it sit for a few minutes. Once you think it has softened the stains, wipe the cleaner off with microfiber cloth.

For the Oven:1. Start by taking out the contents of

the oven.2. Make a baking soda paste by mixing

it with water.

3. Apply the mixture on all the interior surfaces of your oven using cloth. Put more on areas that are too greasy.

4. Leave the baking soda mixture for at least 12 hours or overnight.

5. With a damp cloth, wipe out all the baking soda paste. To further get rid of the dried up baking soda on the surfaces, spray some vinegar; doing so will create a foam effect. Finish off by wiping the oven once more.

For the Induction Cooker:1. Once the cooktop has cooled down,

wipe spills using a damp sponge.2. Pour cooktop cleaner on the

surface (never use bleach cleaners, dishwashing liquid, powder cleaners, and scrub sponge). Spread it out with a paper towel or cooktop cleaner pad.

3. Wipe off the excess cleaner with dry cloth.

Every household needs a washing machine. Whether you’re a domestic diva or an on-the-go businessperson, the washing machine is essential in keeping things in order at home. So if you’re a first-time buyer, read up and consider these important factors.

MEASURE THE SPACEAs with all major furniture or appliance purchases, be sure to measure first the space you plan to allot to the washing machine. If used properly, your washing machine will most likely be one of the oldest appliances you’ll ever own so having a place where it fits in perfectly is important.

CHOOSE BETWEEN TOP-LOAD OR FRONT-LOADSimply put, the top-load opens from the top and the front-load opens from the middle part. If you don’t mind leaning into a washing machine to load and get your clothes, the top-load washing machine is a great option, not to mention that it’s also cheaper. Top-loaders are also designed to accommodate a large laundry capacity.

Front-load machines, meanwhile, are a bit more expensive and will require you to bend down when doing laundry but it also uses less water and is more energy efficient. Some front-load washing machines are also stackable so if you want to buy a washer-dryer combo but you only have a small space, a front-load type is the best choice.

CHECK THE WASHER’S DRUM SIZEA washing machine with a drum size that’s close to 5 cubic feet can easily handle larger loads. Most front-loader drums range from 4.2 to 5 cubic feet. Top-loader drums range from 3.5 to 6.2 cubic feet but will actually handle less because of internal mechanisms.

TEST THE NOISELastly, be sure to test how the loud the washing machine is when buying. Due to recent advancements, some washing machines are quieter now than before but if you’re dealing with a small space, even the faintest sounds can become bothersome over time.

The Scandinavian aesthetic is a buzzword in the field of interior design now. More and more homeowners these days are building and decorating their homes with the goal of achieving the easy, clean, uncomplicated, and one-with-nature feel of a space that follows its design philosophy.

It’s the kind of minimalism that doesn’t equate to lack of character. The overall look feels minimalist, what with the neutral color palette and sense of airiness. But, in essence, the spaces are filled with a bevy of simple furniture pieces and accents, mostly in earthy

muted colors, that altogether create a visually cohesive mix.

Predominantly white interiors tend to look boring and cold—such is not the case with Scandinavian style as things are kept interesting through details like rugs, cushions, artworks, and potted plants that bring life and touches of color to the space.

This design emerged from five Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden during the 1930s. European style is known for opulence through and through,

SCANDINAVIANCHARACTERIZED BY A PARED BACK YET UNDERSTATEDLY SOPHISTICATED STYLE, WITH INTERIORS BATHED IN NATURAL LIGHT, THIS NORDIC INTERIOR DESIGN IS PERENNIALLY CHIC

but in these parts of Europe, people favor practicality and function more than the ornate, purely aesthetical elaborate styling.

The popularity of this design was boosted through the “Design in Scandinavia” exhibition that travelled across US and Canada from 1954 to 1957. The show highlighted and promoted the “Scandinavian way of living”—simple yet beautiful and cozy—and, soon, Scandinavian design made its way into people’s homes.

KEY ELEMENTSThe most apparent element in a Scandinavian-inspired interior is the predominantly white palette and clean lines made interesting with various textures and finishes. The palette is predominantly neutral but cool blues and subdued grays as well as pops of bright colors such as yellow and orange are sometimes incorporated. Wooden floors, specifically in light tones (the likes of beech, pine, and ash), are typical in this design that considers natural elements as part of its core. An interior that welcomes plenty of natural light is key.

TIPS ON ACHIEVING THE SCANDINAVIAN LOOK

1. Add visual interest to the space by using a statement area rug in a design that complements the wooden flooring beautifully.

2. Incorporate potted plants in the styling to bring a sense of the outdoors in.

3. Ditch the heavy-looking fabric and opt for the lightness of cotton, wool, and linen, especially for those finishing touches, like a throw thrown on the couch.

4. For window treatments, pick sheer or translucent curtains to allow a generous amount of light to enter the room.

5. De-clutter!

Ah, the feeling of living by the beach—the waves, the sand, and the breeze easily takes us to a calming, serene, and relaxing state. If you can’t exactly live by the beach but want to take that seaside feel to your home, going for the coastal theme is the perfect choice.

Bright, fresh, and airy, this design inspiration brings the elements of the ocean right at the comforts of your den. The pure, minimalist feel of a coastal setup draws inspiration from its origin along the Atlantic coast—how the ample windows allow the ocean breeze to

come in, sturdy wood can withstand the sand and salty air, and colors mimic those of the sand, sea, and sky.

Blue and white dominate the scheme, with wood elements and a bit of hue popping here and there. Over time, this interior theme expanded from simplistic to modern-esque, no longer just confined to its basic definition. From boho to Mediterranean, Hamptons-style to glam, these quick spins to Coastal gave a more distinct quality to the beachside life, even though you’re miles away from it.

COASTALSEE THE SEA TRANSLATE INTO A REFRESHING INTERIOR SPACE THAT WILL EASILY PUT ONE INTO R&R MODE

It has become a popular choice for many because, really, who doesn’t love the calming vibe of the sea? Putting together elements has also become easier, what with the wide array of nautical-inspired décor choices and the sea of blue (pun intended) shades readily available. Faded wood, which is an essential part of Coastal theme styling, comes in a variety of furniture pieces thanks to the rise of rustic-looking stuff that’s worthy of an Instagram upload. And never forget those shells you picked up in the beach, and the sand you’ve been collecting from every summer trip you’ve gone. If placed in a lovely glass container, your home will surely feel right by the seaside.

KEY ELEMENTSDominate the space with shades of teal and ocean themes—from pillows to rugs, paintings, picture frames, to furniture pieces. A driftwood side table is a great option, too, as well as statement coastal accessories (think stone, rattan, jute, wicker, and wool).

TIPS ON ACHIEVING THE COASTAL LOOK

1. A plain canvas is the right foundation to the coastal look so a stark, white wall is essential to bring in the light.

2. Layer the colors of the sea—a mix of maritime blues and greens, sandy and neutral palettes, and other soft tones like gray and pastels evoke a relaxed atmosphere in the space.

3. Plush pillows and throws add a welcoming feel to the space.

4. Subtly add key sea elements like seashell or coral motifs and other nautical-inspired décor, but don’t overdo it so the refreshing feel of the space won’t be compromised.

5. Experiment by substituting wooden flooring to porcelain tiles

for a more modern touch.

If you think you’re stuck in a creative rut with your minimalist approach in home décor, maybe it’s time to leave your neutral comfort zone. They say anything in excess is bad, but how will you know if a bold print + more prints + loud colors would look great altogether in your space if you don’t try? More is definitely more with maximalism, and it’s high time you embrace the bold era in home styling.

More than just piling on patterns and hues, statement pieces and unique toppers, this take on home design can be liberally done step-by-step. As minimalism exits gracefully out the door, taking with it all the

bare essentials and the basics, maximalism brings in diversity, excess, and extravagance in perfect harmony.

Break the rules one part of the house at a time, whether it’s incorporating a clash of patterns with your throw pillows in the living room or placing mismatched paintings in one wall.

And while it can be a bit intimidating and overwhelming, finding balance in the superfluous is achievable with the right eye for complementing the eccentric and eclectic tones and motifs.

MAXIMALIST ECLECTICTHEY SAY “GO BIG OR GO HOME.” REPHRASE THAT A LITTLE, AND YOU GET “GO BIG IN YOUR HOME.” BIG AND BOLD, THAT’S THE ESSENCE OF MAXIMALISM

Purchase a century-old antique, go crazy on flower pots and vases, replace a plain, boring wall with printed wallpapers, choose brights instead of pastels, get a piece that you won’t normally choose, the works—this spaces is yours, so let your personality shine through it. Feed your creative expression and wow your visitors when they step inside that masterpiece of a space.

KEY ELEMENTSIf you’re clueless on where to start, pillow cases are a good introduction to maximalism—pick boho, floral, and other prints for your sofa. Vintage lamps and other one-of-a-kind fixtures are a sure standout in this beautifully-styled mess. An explosion of colors brings vibrance to the space–forget the clash and mix the hues to your heart’s desire!

In this vignette, the printed wingback chair on one side of the living room setup commands attention, and actually served as the jump-off point for all the colors that will be thrown in the mix. A wingback chair is a staple in homes now—pick one in a bold print, to set the mood of your space.

TIPS ON ACHIEVING THE MAXIMALIST ECLECTIC LOOK

1. Layering is key. If starting with a clean, bare base, just fill every nook and cranny as much as you can, following a certain theme that will breathe in an air of cohesiveness to the styling.

2. Keep an eye out for details, like one-of-a-kind carves, rare furniture finds, unique textures and finishes to pieces.

3. A little symmetry won’t hurt. In maximalism, with every little or big thing thrown in a space, it’s easy to find something that’s out of pace. Make sure to find the connecting factor in each piece as to retain its composure. Make an organized chaos!

4. Repeat if necessary—repetition is the essence of this design style.

5. Be bold and fearless with your options and choose a story that will express the real maximalist in you.

MODERN ASIANRECREATE THE SERENITY OF A ZEN-LIKE SPACE WITH THIS DESIGN THAT MARRIES THE RICHNESS OF ASIAN THEMES AND THE SIMPLICITY OF A MODERN-EDGED SPACE

An Asian-themed interior these days no longer stick to the all-traditional rules. The way these designs are executed now makes use of modern sensibilities, to fit the mold of the current waves of design. The Chinoiserie and Zen-like appeal remains, but there is that conscious effort to infuse touches of modernity.

The fusion of these two essentially extreme styles results to an outcome as harmonious and balanced as the overall mood you are trying to achieve.

When you speak of Asian interior design, there are two designs that define and characterize it. First is the Japanese style, which is minimalist in nature and exemplifies the Zen aesthetic. Second is

the traditional Chinese style, which leans more toward opulence and regal shades of reds and purples.

In this example, the light and spacious living room is influenced by the simplicity of the Japanese style, as the palette is kept in the family of cozy browns, creating visual harmony that is pleasing and relaxing to look at. Thanks to the luxurious brown leather sofas from Natuzzi, the vignette achieves more warmth while getting elevated to a high-end space.

Reverence to nature is an important element in this design category. As such, natural light is key, as well as allocation of space for greenery.

Balance is likewise key in Asian-themed interiors. Here, the patina of the cushiony couch is balanced out by and given plenty of textural interest with the pillowcases, throw, and rugs.

KEY ELEMENTSFirst and foremost, a neutral color palette is important as it serves as the perfect canvas for richer and more opulent and luxurious details. To complement such simplicity, go for simple furnishings with a few Asian accents or artworks, assembled artfully and tastefully.

TIPS ON ACHIEVING THE MODERN ASIAN LOOK

1. The number one factor to consider in an Asian-themed space is balance—whether in your choice of colors and textures or placement of fixtures and furnishings.

2. The palette of the room must be neutral and subdued. It is, ultimately, the goal of an Asian-inspired interior to put forth that quiet elegance which easily calms the dweller.

3. Modern and Asian interior designs maximize the use of natural materials, to achieve a sense of warmth in the space. Accentuate spaces with bamboos, woods, and plants.

4. Glass windows, preferably with a relaxing view of the outdoor or garden area, add to the tranquility of the space.

5. Pay special attention to picking out a lighting fixture. Sculptural and luxurious chandeliers work best in this interior style, and anchor the whole space.

It’s easy to just go for one unified look, but there’s also a visually refreshing and interesting feel that a marriage of two aesthetics brings to interiors. Today, when city life calls for a fast-paced lifestyle, homes must match the ease and dynamism of urban dwelling.

Opposites do attract in this example, as the vintage charm of a rustic interior is integrated with modern industrial elements, giving an inspiration for that old-meets-new scheme.

Take rustic for its vintage appeal, what with people’s fascination with the idea of old-school

materials. Imagine a space with beautifully worn-out furniture, distressed antiques, handcrafted items, and a bit of greenery, and you get a space that harkens back to olden days yet executed with a more contemporary feel. On the other hand, industrial spells iron, steel, metal, pipes, and other strong, masculine elements that command a strong and sharp finish, and are especially appropriate for city living.

The combination of these two themes blends together perfectly, creating an of-the-moment look with unmistakable warmth and homey vibe. If done right, this arrangement makes for an

interesting style with such eccentricity that comes from various materials and textures—the wooden furnishings, the aged bricks, the steel chairs, the hanging metals lights, and other tiny yet important details that collectively give the rustic industrial trend the edge.

TIPS ON ACHIEVING THAT RUSTIC INDUSTRIAL LOOK

1. Start with a neutral palette of predominantly brown hues. Complement it with whites, grays, and steel blacks.

2. Get unique items to make your space stand out. An antique jar, paper maché décor, old photographs in modern frames, or animal statues will add more personality to the overall look.

3. Choose an industrial lighting fixture, like the cage bulb style, to set the tone and mood of the space. For focused lighting, pendants and floor lamps add visual interest.

4. Juxtapose the rough finish of wood with accents in high-sheen and lustrous steel, chrome, or metal.

5. Soften the sharp and tough industrial features with plush couches, area rugs, and cushions.

KEY ELEMENTSWood, metal, and brick are keys. Bring in wood, both worn and brand-new, as well as metal works in different furniture pieces, like chairs, tables, and cabinets. Antique-looking items complement this style. A touch of life adds a comforting feel to the space, too, so potted or hanging plants are great for softening the overall masculine look. Modern trinkets and interesting art pieces make for perfect finishing touches.

Traditional can mean a lot of things for different people. In the ever-changing world of interior design, however, it particularly refers to the style of European décor that became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries that are still followed and applied today.

The traditional design has a timeless charm that highlights the richness of history, observance of harmony, and execution of symmetry. Dark wood tones—the likes of maple, mahogany, and cherry—and elegant furnishings underscore its design core.

Queen Anne (pieces primarily with curved lines), Chippendale (pieces with lines that are straighter), and Sheraton (pieces with round tapered legs and rectilinear forms) styles of furniture exude a regal feel that prove to be perfect with the mood of a traditional space.

Traditional comes off as old, boring, and only grandma-perfect, but the fact that it showcases time-honored style sensibilities that most people grew up with gives it a sense of comfort and familiarity that one would love to come home to every day.

TRADITIONALTHE TRADITIONAL INTERIOR DESIGN IS CLASSIC, TIMELESS, AND COZY-ELEGANT

With proper styling tricks and updates, the traditional, old grand house style can look fresh. Create modern interpretations while staying true to most of the traditional rules. The formal aura of the setting may be infused with hipper and more current accents, for a hint of an of-the-moment feel.

KEY ELEMENTSRegal overall, the traditional interior design style is made up of luxe yet warm and inviting details, such as upholstered furniture, furniture pieces with gentle curves and cabriole legs, wood in darker stain, lamp shades, trims and mouldings, tailored window treatments with fringe accents and tasselled cords, and damask fabric. Objects are arranged with balance and symmetry in mind. The interior features a mix of dark and light colors.

TIPS ON ACHIEVING A TRADITIONAL LOOK

1. Create symmetry in the living room or bedroom by putting the couch or the bed in between matching side tables with lamp shades perched on both sides.

2. Choose a statement piece of furniture with classic upholstery and detailing, such as a bed with a button-tufted headboard.

3. Dress up furniture pieces in fabric with plush textures, like silk, velvet, or cashmere.

4. Offset the dark brown wood tones that dominate the space with lighter shades in the same color family via bed sheets, area rugs, and other accents like lamps, vases, china, and candleholders.

5. Add more character and visual depth to the

walls with mouldings.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “contemporary” as “marked by characteristics of the present period.” It’s considered synonymous to words “modern” and “current.” In interior design, however, contemporary differs from modern.

Contemporary design is ever-changing. With the keyword being “present,” this design then takes on different definitions for different periods of time. The elements that were considered contemporary 10 years ago may no longer be considered contemporary today. Modern design, on the other hand, refers to the style that emerged in the mid-1900s; clean lines, neutral colors, and natural materials are its key characteristics.

Contemporary and modern aesthetics may be used in a space at the same time. In fact, any other interior design style may incorporate contemporary features in the design equation.

CONTEMPORARYKEEP THE LOOK OF YOUR HOME CURRENT AND CLUTTER-FREE WITH A SOPHISTICATED SPIN

at the minimum; all it takes is some effort to come up with a space with a refined, unified look.

A contemporary space is constantly a work in progress, so if you’re the type who loves updating your home every so often, this style will keep you interested for a long time.

KEY ELEMENTSNeutral colors serve as the perfect canvas for a contemporary space; it becomes the jump-off point for accents in black and metal finishes like stainless steel, nickel, and chrome. Wood is timelessly stylish and therefore always finds its share in a space. An oversized artwork, preferably with geometric patterns, can become the focal point in a room.

TIPS ON ACHIEVING THE CONTEMPORARY LOOK

1. Build your home with lots of open spaces, because that feeling of airiness is inherent in a contemporary space.

2. Start with a space painted in a neutral color. Choose from white, cream, or brown. This leaves more room for creativity when it comes to decorating. Don’t veer away from using pops of bold color.

3. When picking out fabric to dress up your home, skip the kitschy prints and go with luxe textures like silk, velvet, or wool.

4. To welcome natural light into the home, keep your window treatments simple.

5. Balance out the clean lines by adding elements with rounded edges, to soften the rigidity of the space.

KEY PIECES

While the core of contemporary design cannot be really pinned on one definition, it has signature elements that easily give a space that present-perfect look.

When it comes to the color palette, there’s no room for big, bold colors here; neutral and subdued shades set the interior’s tone and mood. Likewise, leave all the drama elsewhere, because a contemporary space is meant to look simple, clean, and sleek. Contemporary design also puts special importance on clever storage solutions that are designed to be stylish and functional at the same time. Reflective accents also contribute a timelessly luxe, glossy appeal to this design.

Another thing that must be pointed out about contemporary style is that, while it prefers pieces with clean lines, it’s not essentially synonymous to minimalism. It’s all about simplicity but it doesn’t mean accents should be

FOYER TABLEThe foyer is the first thing you see, coming from the main entrance, thus it sets up the look of the rest of your house. This reason alone should make you want to do things right in terms of styling.

There are different options for table—some with drawers, some are mere floating shelves. Before buying the table, measure how much square footage your entryway takes up so that the piece is perfectly proportioned to the available space.

Essentials include a lamp, a mirror, and storage boxes. Books, candles with stylish stands, fresh flowers, picture frames, small artworks, and a clock likewise bring a homey feel and a dash of personality. When choosing the big pieces in this vignette, make sure their size suits the scale of the table and the wall where the table will be placed against.

COFFEE TABLEThese days, the coffee table doesn’t just function to hold, well, your coffee. It has become an art piece in and of itself.

Since the table is low, make it eye-catching with a combination of high and low decorative elements, like vases in varying heights and piles of books. Make sure your choices of items also look good from all angles.

For big coffee tables, form a grid so the items are arranged in a fashionable and orderly manner, with consideration to balance and symmetry. For long coffee tables, follow the rule of threes; divide into three uniform sections. If your coffee table is in a neutral shade, this is the best way to introduce and incorporate a pop of color in the space; pick vases, trays, books, and other elements in bold colors.

Don’t forget that the coffee table has to be functional, too, more than just decorative. Add trays to hold daily essentials like remote controls.

STYLING THE SURFACECREATE MORE INTERESTING SPACES WITH THESE TIPS FOR STYLING A FOYER TABLE, COFFEE TABLE, AND BOOKSHELF

There are many ways to make a piece of furniture more interesting and attention-grabbing. There’s a bevy of accents that may be added to adorn and give them more personality that’s aligned with the homeowners’ personalities. While styling can be more freestyle these days, there are still certain rules that can be followed to make more stunning vignettes.

BOOKSHELFGone are the days when bookshelves are solely meant for books—they are no longer meant for libraries alone as well! Cleverly styled bookshelves lend a much-needed character to a space and speak a lot about the homeowners and their tastes and preferences.

Before you begin decorating around your collection of books, organize them first by category so they’re easier to find.

Choose a theme for a cohesive final look or go for an eclectic feel. Style some books standing while have some laid horizontally on the shelves, then add trinkets, like

vases, jars, and decorative figures, on top of the laid down books. Make way for blank spaces in the shelf to accommodate more trinkets, maybe a picture frame or a small framed artwork.

If the shelf is overflowing with elements already, use the inner edges to hang artworks or picture frames in front of the bookshelf.

If you have preferred genres of books, say architecture and travel, use elements that are associated with those genres, such as an Eiffel Tower figurine or a globe. If you like books on gardening, decorate the shelf with succulents and fresh flowers.

Dining out is an enjoyable experience, but there are days when dining at home proves to be more appealing. Whether you’re planning of hosting a party or just want to bond with a few family members, it’s important that you create a dining setup to set up the mood for lots of interaction and revelry. Let these reminders guide you as you put together a tablescape that your guests will surely be delighted by. 1. EVALUATE YOUR DINING REQUIREMENTS. Is it just you and your family, or are you having some friends over? Prepare enough tableware and glassware for all.

2. DECIDE ON A THEME. Take inspirations from the season—if it’s summer, go for a tablescape with lots of bright colors and fresh blooms. Are you celebrating a particular occasion? If it’s a loved one’s birthday, then the theme should be something close to his or her heart. If there’s no special occasion but you all still want to gather just for fun, then pick a theme that speaks about you and your guests—a common interest you all can relate to.

3. CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE. Depending on your theme, decide on a color palette. It should be a mix of neutral and bold colors.

4. KEEP BALANCE IN MIND. Say, if your dinnerware is in white, you can be a little more experimental with the prints of the tablecloth, napkin or runner, because the dinnerware won’t clash with any of them.

5. STOCK UP ON ENTERTAINING ESSENTIALS. There are pieces that you will find yourself constantly using because of their versatility. Mason jars, clear vases, votives, and glass hurricanes are items that can work with most themes.

6. BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR CENTERPIECE. There are so many options, the more popular being a collection of candles and containers like mason jars, lanterns, bird cages. For a native touch, burlap and twine are the go-tos. Don’t forget to put a fresh element to the table, and add flowers

that may be styled along with pretty-looking fruits and vegetables—talk about edible styling!

7. TRY MIXING FORMAL AND INFORMAL ELEMENTS. Doing so creates an unexpectedly stylish and unique spin. Not conforming with the tried-and-tested is a welcome surprise.

8. MAKE DETAILS COUNT. DON’T OVERLOOK THE DETAILS. Make sure the spoons, forks, and knives are in their proper places. Check if the runner and table napkins are aligned. The elements must be well spaced in the setup. The centerpieces must not be too tall that talking to the person across you becomes hard. Add bits and pieces of elements that are so unique they can start a conversation.

If you want to have some texture and personality in your space, a rug is one of the easiest elements to add. Choosing what type to use, however, proves to be a tricky design dilemma because of the options available that vary in style, material, and quality.

But once you’ve found the perfect piece, there’s no denying how big of a difference it makes in giving character to an otherwise plain space. Here are tips for choosing and styling with an area rug:

CHOOSE YOUR RUG AND EVERYTHING FOLLOWS. There’s a tried-and-tested design rule that makes the rug the jump-off point of all the other elements in the room, such as the walls’ paint color and the patterns of the accents. Design with the conscious effort to complement this floor accent, and have everything else anchored on it.

OR, PICK THE FURNITURE FIRST. If you’re just moving into a new home and in the process of shopping for furniture pieces, choose first the item you want to style with an accent rug. Since your sofa in the living room or table in the dining room is more prominent in the space, you can opt to make that the focal point in the space, enhanced by the artistic and practical touch a complementary rug.

MAKE IT COMPLEMENT A SPACE. If using a rug is an afterthought, pick one that fits perfectly into a given space. Don’t pick one with a design that’s too overpowering. Let the 60-30-10 rule guide you: 60% is made up of your dominant color that takes from your wall or statement furniture pieces, 30% goes to the secondary color where the feature of your rug comes in, and 10% is for the small accents that contribute to the whole color scheme but shouldn’t pop as much.

FOLLOW THE SIZE OF THE FURNITURE. For a seamless look, pick area rugs that match the silhouette of your furniture pieces, especially in the dining room—for example, a round rug for a round dining table.

USE THE RUG TO DEMARCATE SPACES. To separate the living room from the dining room, create a visual demarcation with the help of two different area rugs. Doing so also gives each space a look distinct from the other.

CONSIDER THE SIZE AND SHAPE. When picking out your area rug, measure first the space it will be placed in and how it will be set up alongside the furniture pieces. For the living room, for example, the rug should extend beyond the coffee table and at least the first set of legs of a chair or sofa. For the dining room, choose a rug that gives at least two feet allowance on each sides of the table, to make space for when the chairs are pulled out.

LAYER RUGS FOR MORE TEXTURE AND STYLE. Try putting a smaller rug on top of a larger one. Think of it like layering your outfit, where the overall look becomes more interesting and unpredictably stylish.

CONSIDER FOOT TRAFFIC. For high-traffic areas, pick the low pile types. Reserve the soft, high pile types for areas like the bedroom.

ARTWORK FOR THE FLOORMORE THAN THE PURPOSE OF PROTECTING THE FLOOR FROM DAMAGES, AN AREA RUG ALSO TIES THE LOOK OF THE ROOM TOGETHER

WHY THIS WORKSIn this example, despite the various elements that give this space that look of an organized chaos, the rug gets its share of the limelight because of its bold geometric pattern. It complements the dark, solid tones from the leather sofa, chair, and coffee tables.

CARPET VS. RUGBoth are meant to cover the floor and protect it from damages from furniture pieces. Often used interchangeably, they are actually different in terms of size, with rugs being smaller than carpets. If it’s smaller than 2m (6.5 ft.), it’s still classified as a rug; anything beyond that is a carpet.

Sure, designing a space from scratch is fun and all, but it presents challenges too. Like, when shopping for items to adorn the space, it can sometimes be hard to visualize how certain elements or pieces will come together. A particular design may look stylish on its own but when mixed with other designs, it may look out of place. And before you realize this, you may be done with

your purchases already and therefore have to live with a visually incoherent interior for, who knows, how long!

Thanks to technology, there are tools available now that can help with creating designs for different spaces—be it a residential or a commercial interior. Wilcon Depot extends the scope of their customer service, to cater more to the needs of their clients, with their very own Design Hub.

TIPSPREP THE PARTY AREABefore you even begin setting up, make sure that the venue is tidied up first, is conducive for partying, and looks beautiful for all those picture-taking. Get your garden groomed.

ADD FRESH FLOWERSEnhance the feel of nature with fresh flowers that are not only pretty but also smell good. Put them in nice-looking pots and place around the venue. Put some in a vase and place on top of the table.

BRING OUT THE TABLES, CHAIRS, AND TABLEWARESet up the tables and chairs. Make sure you have a headcount of the guests you’re expecting so that everyone can have their respective seats. Have extra chairs on hand for safety. Let not the wind be an issue as well. Don’t use paper plates and cups; go for weighty dishes and glassware.

your guests entertained. Make sure the volume is just right for the crowd you’re expecting. Are they young? Then go with loud and upbeat music (the volume is at your discretion, but consider your neighbors as well). Otherwise, skip the speaker-blaring sounds and have some sweet, soft music playing in the background.

PREPARE SOME ACTIVITIESKeep the mood and energy of the party lively. Have some games ready.

LIGHT UPWhether you’re holding a daytime party (which you think will extend till night) or an outdoor dinner, ensure that the garden area is well-lit. Have candles by the table, put candles inside lamppost accents and put them along a pathwalk, or hang string lights.

BRING THE PARTY OUTSIDESUN’S OUT! GATHER YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND HAVE AN AWESOME GARDEN BBQ PARTY

If you have a spacious garden, maximize it! Don’t let the beauty of the natural setting go to waste. Make the most of the sunny weather, and hold a bbq party! Shop for and stock up on garden-pretty, outdoor-perfect entertaining pieces to create one memorable and stylish get-together. Here’s a checklist of the items you should have as well as tips for achieving that casual yet fun table setting:

MAKE SURE THERE’S (ENOUGH) FOOD FOR EVERYONEFirst, consider the types of food your guests are most likely to enjoy. Go the extra mile with being a hostess and ask if they have certain food allergies so you can avoid them as well. Again, it’s important that you have an estimate of the number of people going so you can prepare the amount of food accordingly.

GET THE BBQ GRILLER READYPrep all the meat you plan to grill as well as the condiments and spices.

SET THE MOOD WITH GOOD MUSICNo party is ever successful without good music. This is key to keeping

However, not all plants are suitable indoors, and these natural accents require special care and attention. Read up on these tips.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTSSome types that can thrive indoors include bamboo palms, spider plants, snake plants, aloe plants, bromeliads, philodendron, and cactus.

PLACE THE PLANTS IN THE RIGHT AREASDon’t put them in dark places and never in a spot that is directly hit by sunlight.

WATER THE PLANTS ELSEWHEREIf you’re going to water them, take them to the shower or the garden so you don’t make a mess out of your interior space.

TAKE EXTRA CARE OF THE PLANTS Nurture the plants with liquid fertilizer.

BE CREATIVE ABOUT WHERE TO PUT THEMPut them in a corner of the room, on top of a chair or table, hang from the ceiling—there are so many ways they can be integrated seamlessly.

GREEN LIVINGBRING THE OUTDOOR IN BY PUTTING POTTED PLANTS IN YOUR INTERIOR SPACES

Green is in—literally! The idea of bringing the outdoors in has been a trend in recent years, and with its beautiful benefits to a space, it’s certainly a trend that is not going anywhere. The best way to do so is by decorating with potted plants scattered around. They easily soften the sharp features of a minimalist, modern, industrial, or contemporary home, and add a much-needed natural element that can warm and freshen up the interior.

A common mistake among car owners is not investing the time and energy to clean their automobiles inside and out. A car could be new or old but with proper car wash maintenance, you will hardly be able to tell the difference. If you’re unsure of what to do, read on to see how easy it is to keep your car squeaky clean.

Don’t use dishwashing soap. Before anything else, don’t even think about using detergents or household cleaning soaps. Use a dedicated car-wash product, which has been formulated to clean your car of grime without stripping it of its wax and sheen.

Don’t swipe in circular motion. Avoid going in circles, which can create scratches or swirl marks. Instead, sponge your car in lengthwise motions. Using a car sponge or rag, wash your car lengthwise across the hood and all over the body. Be sure that your sponge or rag is free from dirt or particles since that can also cause damage to the exterior. Also, don’t wash your car when it’s

hot since it can cause the soap and water to dry quickly.

Do rinse and dry thoroughly. It can be tempting to just let your car air-dry but don’t since it will have watermarks all over. Instead, grab a soft rag and dry it thoroughly. Occasionally, do wax your car since it’s like sunscreen for your vehicle. It adds a layer of protection from UV rays to prevent fading.

Do wash the wheels. Do not forget to wash your wheels and your rims to remove mud or gunk that’s accumulated over daily use. Adding a layer of tire black will help restore a tire’s deep black color.

Do vacuum the inside. After picking up all the litter and other junk inside your car, grab a vacuum to suck up all the dirt that’s stuck in the nooks and crannies of your car, especially underneath car seats. Every now and then, take your carpets out and use a carpet cleaning solution to wash it.
