ALL ABOUT BOARS

“Today there's an estimated four million wild pigs spread across 39 states, with large populations in California, Texas, and the Southeast, according to the study.” (Dell'Amore, Christine. "Wild Pig Explosion May Spread Disease to Humans." National Geographic. National Geographic Society, 02 May 2011. Web. 06 Dec. 2012.)

Wild boars over run places they leave behind evidence of rutting and scavenging through fields, to find food.

“Wild or feral pigs were implicated in at least one E. coli incident in a vegetable field in the Salinas Valley. Some have called wild pigs a minor contributor to the E. coli threat, pointing to domestic animals as larger sources for E. coli in California’s food crop.” ("California Wild Pig Population Far Larger than Imagined." Western Farm Press. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Dec. 2012.)

Wild boars roam the country, and with them they bring disease. This is important for us to know s o that we can be careful when we hunt and kill them. Eating is another way of spreading their diseases.

“In the early 1700's Spanish and Russian settlers introduced domestic pigs to California as livestock and many became feral. In the 1920's a Monterey county landowner introduced the European wild boar, a wild subspecies of Sus scrofa into California, which bred with the domestic pigs. The result of these introductions is a wild boar/feral domestic pig hybrid.” ("California Wild Pig Population Far Larger than Imagined." Western Farm Press. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Dec. 2012.)

The wild boar started out a farm pig then were released into the wild, which caused them to adapted and survive.

“Then in 1923, a Carmel Valley rancher imported two dozen Eurasian wild boar from a private reserve in North Carolina, to be used as game animals. These were fierce, shaggy boars with a bad attitude -- just the kind of game hunters like to stalk. Some of the boars escaped and migrated into the coastal ridges, but it was hunters themselves who spread the hybridized hogs throughout the state.” ("Rooting for Feral Pigs." Feral Pigs. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Dec. 2012.)

Boars have personalities just like people do and can be taught to be very ferocious and mean.

“Wild boars are native to most of Europe and to northern Africa and southern Asia”("Facts about Boars." Facts about BOARS ***. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Dec. 2012.)

Wild boars are native to most of Europe and Africa.

.“There are 13 species of wild boars”("Facts about Boars." Facts about BOARS ***. N.p., n.d. Web. 11 Dec. 2012.)

I didn’t know there were 13 different types of wild boar.

“Feral hogs, also called wild pigs, range across 56 of 58 counties in California. Wild pigs are omnivorous. They will eat most types of vegetation and carrion. Their natural method of eating, called rooting, is very damaging to crops, making wild pigs a problem to farmers and ranchers. Feral hogs may be trapped and removed under the state's depredation permit system.”(Coop, Terri Lynn. "California State Laws on Trapping and Transporting Wild Feral Hogs." EHow. Demand Media, 18 Jan. 2011. Web. 07 Dec. 2012.)

Wild boars can be found all over the United States and in those areas they are quite abundant.

"There's always the potential for attacks on people... They have four-inch tusks that are very sharp and they can be aggressive, particularly the adult males, and charge a pet or a person if they feel trapped. They can slash with those tusks and create pretty deep gashes and wounds." Sanchez, Ray. "Wild Boars Invade New York State; Kill Pets, Chase People." Reuters. Thomson Reuters, 29 July 2011. Web. 03 Dec. 2012.

Boars can attack people and are a threat to lives.  People don’t actually realize how dangerous they are.

“For years, Northern California and the Bay Area have proudly flown the flag of epicurean hedonism, leading the nation in wine production and nouveau cuisine. Even in this merlot-soaked, fresh-organic-ingredients milieu, where great chefs are treated like celebrities, it is seldom noted that the region boasts another little-known gastronomic piece de resistance—the feral pig.” ("Hunting Wild Boar." Hunting Wild Boar. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Dec. 2012.)

Boars do tear up crops and are a huge nuisance to crop owners.

Conclusion

• In the end Wild Boars are both a threat and apart of the natural world.  They can be a nuisance but we can’t totally get rid of them ever.  Wild Boars are animals too, even if they tear up our crops, kill our livestock, spread, disease and even kill us sometimes.  They are all over the world too, not just in California.

Reflection• We learned so much about theses animals and why they travel and

rut up fields. There is more then meets the eye on theses amazing creatures. (Chloe)

• I had no idea how many wild boars there were around us. I learned so much about the animal and now I can look for clues of them around. (Spencer)

• Wild Boars are interesting creatures I enjoyed learning about how they eat and roam the land. I never knew that they caused so much damage. (Alyssa)
