small ships,Big ExperiencesWelcome to Wild Earth Travel’s exclusive collection of 2016 small ship and expedition cruises. Step aboard for an adventure like no other, be it luxury or adventure, be assured that Wild Earth has the voyage for you. The journey is integral to the experience of a destination. Aboard a Wild Earth voyage you are always in great hands, from our ships which range from luxurious through practical, to the expert staff on board who share their enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge.

In recent years the interest in Wild Earth Travel’s small ship and expedition cruise offerings has grown dramatically. We’ve been intimately involved with this style of cruising for nearly three decades, and the range of itineraries, options and ships continues to evolve rapidly. We’ve spent years aboard many of these ships leading voyages, operating and designing itineraries and have developed an intimate knowledge of the ships, their capabilities and the destinations to which they travel. Our extensive experience and passion for this style of travel ensures you the opportunity to speak directly with an expert. Our team is always available to discuss itinerary and ship selections, cabin options and other details you require to ensure your ultimate satisfaction.

The voyages we have chosen for inclusion in this brochure are our best of the best, the most exciting and interesting voyages. Some are classic voyages, while others offer the first opportunity to visit new, undiscovered destinations. We have handpicked these voyages with an eye to the style in which you will travel but most importantly the incredible experiences which they offer.

TWO STYLES: Educational and Experimental CruisingOur travellers enjoy journeys that deliver more, with programs that allow more time ashore, select educational programs from internationally acclaimed expert lecture staff and the freedom to explore further and more freely. Across our cruise itineraries the focus is always on providing the highest quality experience in exceptional destinations. In keeping with a commitment to provide tailored experiences in all destinations we offer two principal styles of voyaging. Both retain the same core principles and benefits that we believe makes our voyages great.

EXPEDITION CRUISINGThe key principal to remember when expedition cruising is “Expect the Unexpected.” If you enjoy seeing and experiencing the wonders of nature, an expedition cruise offers the perfect environment for this. Expedition cruises take you to less developed shores which allows for greater flexibility and spontaneity. These voyages set forth with an aim to explore and discover. It is often the unexpected events that become the highlight of the journey.

Travelling aboard an expedition ship is often the only way to access and explore the remote destinations they visit, providing a home in the wilderness and the means to tread where few have been before. Discover the treasures on our planet that remain pristine, from polar seas to tropical atolls. Explore with a team of expert naturalists who will travel ashore with you and also will provide informative presentations aboard. Generally the majority of expedition excursions will make use of zodiac landing craft. These agile and stable craft are ideal for landing in otherwise inaccessible places and providing you with up-close encounters with wildlife and local communities.

SMALL SHIP CRUISINGThese voyages explore more populated coastlines where the ships are able to dock in ports and harbours. The beauty of small ships is that they are not constrained to large ports and you will often find yourself in smaller towns and villages. The style and pace of exploration is less energetic than expedition cruising but the focus is still very much on the destination and providing maximum time ashore. Itineraries are often themed with a focus on a particular region or aspect such as history and culture. On many departures there are special guest lecturers and presenters who will share their knowledge and enthusiasm during the voyage and on forays ashore. Small ship cruising allows you to learn about the wonders of nature, culture and ancient civilisations in the company of a small group of like-minded guests in a relaxed yet comfortable atmosphere.

DISCOVER the DestinationOur voyages are all about what we think is the most important element, which is where you are going. Increasingly as people look for meaningful experiences they are turning to the opportunities provided by smaller ships to truly discover the destination. We believe that our voyages are the best way to see and experience the destination, from the arrival by sea into a port to the flexibility of venturing off the beaten path.

Our ships have the freedom of the seas and can easily visit small harbours or anchor

in out of the way coves. The abilities of our ships to provide you with unique and inspiring experiences is matched only by those of the captains and expedition staff who will lead you to truly discover the destination.

Although you will find a wide selection of hand-picked voyages in this brochure it is by no means exhaustive, there really are too many to list. If there is water, we will have a small ship or expedition cruise. If you don’t find a program that suits your requirements or you have a specific destination in mind please check our

website for a full list of ships, departures and destinations, www.wildearth-travel.com.

We encourage you to contact us or speak to your travel agent about the options that Wild Earth has available. We are always pleased to share our knowledge and experience to ensure that you have the experience of a lifetime and have access to the latest information on pricing, ships and of course, destinations.

With over 1,000 small ship cruises available, we are sure to find your perfect small ship cruise.

BOUTIQUE and ExclusiveIf you enjoy a more personal style of travel where you travel with smaller groups, discover more, and engage with your fellow travellers then our ships and programs could well be perfect. By travelling aboard a small ship we guarantee that you will spend less time in queues and more time experiencing the unique destinations on the itinerary or engaging with fellow travellers and the ship’s crew. This all combines to create an exclusive and intimate yet relaxed atmosphere.

ALL INCLUSIVEMost of Wild Earth’s voyages are all inclusive. This means that what you read in the itinerary is included in the price, with no hidden extras or nasty surprises. On the rare occasions when there is an optional excursion this will be noted in the itinerary. Aboard our more luxurious vessels the bar drinks are also included. While this may mean that our voyages are not the cheapest available, remember you have paid for everything upfront as you purchase the cruise and the experiences all at once. Our customers consistently agree that our voyages represent excellent value for money.

TRANSPARENCY OF PRICINGIn recent years world currencies have fluctuated significantly. We offer you cruise prices in the currency that the individual ships operate. Rather than factoring in guaranteed local prices which invariably mean that you pay more, we will always offer you the best available price on the day of payment. You will see that the cruises in this brochure are usually priced in USD, EURO, GBP or AUD, however we will always accept payment in either Australian or New Zealand Dollars. TRIP

ABOARD: Polar Pioneer

PRICES: AU$7,080 pp – AU$11,900 pp

DEPARTS: 13 June 2016 and 13 June 2017

WILD SCOTLAND

From the Hebrides in the west, to inhospitable windswept specks of land such as St Kilda and Foula, to the Orkney and Shetland Islands in the north, we’ll explore the intriguing diversity of these wild islands. We plan to take in Neolithic sites scarcely changed in 5000 years and ponder the mystery of huge monoliths that marked seasonal change. We’ll visit remote crofting communities, picturesque villages and castles that were once strongholds of Scottish clans. We hope to see some of the world’s largest seabird colonies, raucous places filled with gannets, fulmars, arctic terns and delightful puffins.

DAY 1: Oban, Scotland Welcome aboard the Polar Pioneer in Oban.

DAY 2 – 3: Western Isles Overnight we travel to Iona, birthplace of Christianity in Britain and burial ground of early Scottish kings. At Staffa, we visit Fingal’s Cave, set amidst spectacular basalt columns, and learn why it inspired Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. In the Cuillin Hills, spiritual heart of Skye, follow a lonely track to Rubh’an Dunain, an ancient passage grave with a nearby Iron Age fort and stonelined canal, possibly built by Vikings. If conditions allow, we may take longer walks into the hills. Canna offers golden and sea

eagles, basking sharks, dolphins, grey seals and puffins.

DAY 4 – 6: Northwest Islands Conditions permitting, we land on Hirta, in remote St Kilda, home to Europe’s most important seabird colony and Britain’s highest sea stacks. We learn of the incredible islanders, who survived here for nearly 5000 years, and their heroic courtship rituals. On Lewis we visit the Callanish Stones, sombre slabs placed upright nearly 3000 years ago to mark burial sites. A Zodiac cruise takes us to pure white beaches where the brave might swim and Bostadh’s reconstructed Iron Age house. We aim to visit Sula Sgeir and North Rona, tiny islands with dramatic coastlines, inhabited by breeding seals and seabirds.

DAY 7 – 8: Shetland Isles Closer to Norway than Scotland, the Shetland Isles played a strategic role in Viking conquests. We visit the capital, Lerwick, and explore the complex Stone, Bronze and Iron Age settlement of Jarlshof. On Mousa, we walk to the world’s best-preserved Iron Age structure known as a broch and our historian recounts its importance. Foula’s five dramatic peaks dwarf its crofting hamlets and its cliffs are alive with kittiwakes, razorbills, fulmars and skuas. Papa Stour’s coastline offers Zodiac exploration of dramatic caves.

DAY 9 – 10: Orkney Islands Blessed with red, fertile soil, the Orkney archipelago has welcomed people since ancient

times. From Kirkwall, we visit 5000 - year old archaeological wonders like Skara Brae, excavated less than 100 years ago. We view relics of Viking occupation and World War II curiosities, include the exquisite Italian Chapel, built from scrap by Italian POWs. We sail past the giant sea stack Old Man of Hoy. On Papa Westray we see the Knap of Howar, the oldest standing dwelling in Europe and on to Fair Isle, a birdwatchers’ paradise, where the few inhabitants still live in traditional crofts and welcome us to admire and buy their exquisite knitwear.

DAY 11: Aberdeen, Scotland We disembark and bid farewell to the Polar Pioneer.

DAY 3: Korcula, Croatia You will be enchanted by the harmony which emerges from the old town of Korcula. The medieval architecture of white stone towers

All through the cruise things were very clearly explained to us… All the staff were excellent... We had a whale expert, an underwater specialist, a videographer who made a video of the cruise for us to buy should we choose, a photography expert, an expert in native arts and crafts, then very knowledgeable people in plants, animals, birds, natural history etc. Everything

was covered… Amazing! We saw a wonderful range of wildlife. One day we went to a particular bay and they took us out in the zodiacs to see the wildlife in the waters. That was one of the best days of my life… Another day they took us close to a calving

glacier in the zodiacs… All in all, we had a most wonderful time and would love to do another cruise.John and Jane. Travelled to Alaska with National Geographic in 2014

The Best of JAPAN

Aboard Le Soleal, set sail for a cruise to the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’, a blend of modernity and tradition. During our voyage Japan will open its doors to you and reveal its imperial past, where the history of the Samurais rub shoulders with the subtle delicateness of geishas. We will call at Hiroshima, the gateway to Miyajima, home to the majestic Shinto Shrine. When Le Soleal reaches the port of Nagasaki, you will be reminded of the story of Madame Butterfly, the strains of which can still be heard in the narrow city streets. You will be comfortably ensconced on the outer decks of Le Soleal when you get your first glimpse of the skyline of Okayama, an ancient 16th century city. Do not miss the famous Korakuen Gardens. From Sakaiminato, discover medieval Japan and its former Samurai homes before disembarking in Maizuru.

DAY 1: Osaka, Japan Explore the city of Osaka before embarking Le Soleal in the early evening.

DAY 2: Tamano Choose to join an excursion to the Korakuen garden, one of the best landscaped gardens in Japan. You will also explore Kurashiki city, well known for the lovely white walls of its buildings

and its historical centre. Alternatively, join an art appreciation tour to Naoshima Island.

DAY 3: Hiroshima After WWII, great efforts were taken to rebuild the city of Hiroshima. Destroyed monuments of Hiroshima’s historical heritage, like Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden were reconstructed. Alternatively, travel to the scenic island of Miyajima, widely considered to be one of Japan’s most picturesque destinations.

DAY 4: Uwajima Upon arrival in Uwajima your first visit will be a beautiful terraced field of Yusu Mizugaura, there is a stone wall about a meter high and a meter wide. Because of its beauty, this wall, which flows gracefully from the top of the mountain, has been selected as an important national cultural site.

DAY 5: Kagoshima Kagoshima is a historical city watched over by the looming bulk of Sakurajima, an active volcano that regularly dumps ash over the city. The home of near-mythical samurai hero Saigo Takamori, it is full of sites related to the Satsuma Rebellion.

If you are dreaming of an exotic tropical cruise, then the Seychelles is the perfect destination for an island hopping voyage.

Here is an extraordinary cruise for those who enjoy the natural world and all its wonders. Madagascar is unique; the animals, plants, landscapes and people that make up this thousand mile long island are unlike anywhere else. For many the highlight of our voyage will be our time spent on the island of Aldabra. Aldabra is the last breeding ground of the giant tortoise and in addition you should also encounter dolphins, turtles and whales as well as countless birds. We conclude our odyssey with Zanzibar.

DAY 1: Mauritius Embark the MS Island Sky in Port Louis.

DAY 2: Reunion Enjoy a full day tour which visits the central highlands where spectacularly rugged peaks of extinct volcanoes cradle huge amphitheatres, where mountains tower to over 10,000 feet and beautiful waterfalls plummet hundreds of feet.

DAY 3: At sea Enjoy a relaxing day as we cruise to Madagascar.

DAY 4: Ile Sainte Marie & Nosy Nato, Madagascar This morning we will explore the capital of Ambodifotatra including the oldest church in Madagascar built in 1837 and the vibrant market. In the afternoon we head to Nosy Nato where you can choose to join a nature walk to look for the wildlife or enjoy an afternoon of snorkelling.

DAY 5 – 6: Nosy Mangabe & Masoala NP At Nosy Mangabe, a 520 hectare island reserve we find one of the most diverse areas of virgin rain forest in Madagascar. Over lunch we cross Antongil Bay and enjoy the afternoon and next morning at Madagascar’s largest protected area, the Masoala National Park which comprises coastal rainforest, flooded forests and marsh and mangroves. Mammal species encountered include the red-ruffed lemur, the red-fronted brown lemur, the aye-aye, the greater hedgehog and tenrec.

DAY 7: Diego Suarez We will enter dramatic Diego Suarez a stunning natural harbour with a cosmopolitan mix of inhabitants. After a brief tour of the town we will make our way to the Malagasy Rain Forest at the Mount Amber National Park where we will go in search of lemurs and chameleons.

DAY 8: Assumption, Seychelles Assumption was ruthlessly plundered for its vast deposits of guano in the early 20th century. Happily, peace has returned and the wildlife of rare birds and green turtles are once again in abundance.

DAY 9 – 10: Aldabra, Seychelles At sunrise we arrive at Aldabra where we have planned for a day and a half to explore the island referred to by Sir Julian Huxley as “One of nature’s treasures and should belong to the whole world”. Whilst exploring by Zodiac it is difficult to know in which direction to look. The clear blue seas abound with colourful life, the skies are alive with

varied birdlife and ashore giant land tortoises forage as they have done for millions of years.

DAY 11: At sea A final day to relax on board.

DAY 12: Zanzibar, Tanzania The colourful harbour is crowded with dhows, setting the scene for our visit to the Arab style city with its long narrow streets, bazaars and intricately carved doorways. Out of town there are magnificent white sandy beaches and lush vegetation with plantations of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg which fill the air with heady aromas.

DAY 13: Dar es Salaam Disembark and transfer to the airport.

Phuket to the Maldives: Myanmar and BeyondABOARD: Silver Discoverer

PRICES: US$10,750 pp – US$20,250 pp

DEPARTS: 2 December 2016

On this 16-day Indian Ocean adventure, plunge deep into the clear blue waters off the Mergui Archipelago. Visit Bagan, the ‘Cradle of Civilisation’ and experience indigenous culture in the Andaman Islands. Discover historic Sri Lankan fortresses and shop for spices in local bazaars. Explore Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), isolated for so long. The vast amount of cultural sites Myanmar has to offer ranges from bustling Yangon (known as the ‘city of Peace’) where we will see the impressive reclining Buddha and the most sacred Golden Pagoda overlooking the city to some of Myanmar’s most significant pagodas and temples found in Bagan. We then head over to the Andaman Islands, Sri Lanka and eventually the Maldives.

DAY 1: Phuket, Thailand Embark Silver Discoverer and depart on your exciting expedition toward the Mergui Archipelago.

DAY 2: Kawthaung and Frost Island, Mergui Archipelago The Mergui Archipelago is a prime location for underwater activities. Limestone rock pinnacles, fringing sloping reefs and hard coral reef gardens will not only attract fish, but divers and snorkelers alike.

DAY 3: Pu Nala and Kyunn Tann Shey, Lambi Group, Mergui Archipelago More than 50 white sand beaches and fringing reefs wait to be used for snorkelling, birdwatching or just relaxing. Lambi’s outstanding beauty is enhanced by spotting monkeys, hornbills, sea eagles and a small herd of elephants.

DAY 4: At Sea A day at sea will allow you to prepare for our next country, Myanmar.

DAY 5: Yangon, Myanmar Enjoy an excursion visiting the world-famous 2,500-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda before an evening at the Padonmar restaurant, where we will experience authentic home-cooked Myanmar cuisine and traditional Burmese puppetry.

DAY 6: Yangon, Myanmar (Full day tour to bagan) One of the complimentary choices for today is to fly to Bagan to see some of the most significant pagodas and temples dating back to the 11th and 13th century. Alternatively, we will visit the city of Bago on the banks of the River Bago.

DAY 7: At Sea Enjoy a day at sea as you head towards India.

DAY 8: Port blair and Elephant beach, Andaman Islands, India In the very early morning we arrive at Port Blair, the Andaman Islands’ main town. Bumphead parrotfish, groupers, sweetlips, and even seahorses abound.

DAY 9: South Cinque Island and Ross Island, India We will make the most of our morning visit to spectacular South Cinque and will snorkel, dive, kayak or simply relax on one of the beaches.

DAY 10 – 11: At Sea Cruise the Indian Ocean as the on board lecturers will keep you entertained with stories of adventure and facts of natural history.

DAY 12: Galle, Sri Lanka Today we want to explore the ancient Muslim port of Galle enjoying its colonial Dutch architecture and the Arab quarter.

DAY 13: Kirinda, Sri Lanka Kirinda is located just south of the Yala (Ruhuna) National Park. A wide variety of wild animals live in the park, including Sri Lankan Elephants and one of the highest densities of leopards in the world.

DAY 14: At Sea Make use of the amenities on board as we cruise the Indian Ocean.

DAY 15: Male and Kuda bandos, Maldives Explore Male’s fascinating mixture of small streets, cluttered bazaars and beautifully carved mosques. This afternoon we go ashore at Kuda Bandos, a small and peaceful sandy island.

DAY 16: Male, Maldives After breakfast, disembark Silver Discoverer.
