NAPLES MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL Duane Werner, Principal
PSC 808, BOX 15 Craig Lord, Vice-Principal
FPO, AE 09618-0001
Signing off!
I have enjoyed the last four months as the vice principal of Naples Middle High
School.
School has ended and the weather is hot –swimming pool weather. We hope that
everyone has a very safe summer filled with rest and recreation much deserved and
needed. If you are returning in the fall, we look forward to seeing you. If you are
departing, we wish all the best for you.
Summer hours for office and registration are 08:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00. Closed
for lunch from 12:00-13:00.
If your student is planning on playing a sport in the Fall, they can get ready by
working out with Coach Andrew Hall. Please contact the school for information
regarding workout times and place: 629-4061 or 081-811-4061.
Also, all students are required to have a physical on file with the nurse in order to play
on the school teams. Below is a link to a video (commercial) that reminds students
and parents that Student Athletes must have Sports Physicals in order to participate in
any DoDDS-Europe Sports. We are pushing this now in hopes that Student Athletes
will get their Sports Physicals renewed or done before the school year is out. This
way they are good to go for the Fall Sports Season as well as the rest of the scholastic
year as most Sports Physicals are good for one year.

Summer Reading Ideas
By Elizabeth Ballard
In my English teacher fantasies, I hand my students a summer reading list as they pass through my
doorway one last time and the shouts of glee echo down the hall. “Yeah!” or “Wow!” and “These are great
choices!” or maybe even, “The list is kind of short. Do you think she has some other ideas for us?” An English
teacher can dream, can’t she?
Alas, I wake up and I’m more likely to hear “Ahhh, do I have to?”, “Will there be a test on this? If there
isn’t going to be a test, than I am not doing it” or “But it’s my vacation!”
Countless studies have shown that students that read over the summer are more likely to retain what they
learned over the school year. Those same studies also show that it helps them to start the upcoming year better
prepared than their peers that don’t read.
I could go on to list some of those studies and overwhelm you with statistical evidence to prove my point,
but I hope - for the sake - of brevity that you will just take my professional word for it.
Or, maybe your views are more in keeping with those of Kanye West: “Sometimes people write novels
and they just be so wordy and so self-absorbed. I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book's autograph. I
am a proud non-reader of books." If you are, no amount of statistical data I could provide would change your
mind.
Personally, I tend to lean more towards Dr. Seuss’ philosophy, “The more that you read, the more things
you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” And that’s why we, as teachers, send home
summer reading lists. We want our students to go places, lots of strange, wonderful, exotic places and we hope
that they will bring you, the adults in their lives, along for the ride. Don’t let your student’s read alone! There’s
nothing more solitary and frustrating than reading something incredible and having no one with whom to share
the laughs and tears. So grown-ups, this list is for you, too. These are just some suggestions. If you don’t fancy
those on our list, I am certain the base library can recommend something to spark your imagination. A lot of our
choices are more current. Maybe you’ll want to revisit one of your favorite classics and share it with your
student? No matter which course of action you choose, I hope you end up falling into the pages of a spectacular
book. Happy Reading!

Ahh Summer...
Sun, Sea, Parties, Fun…and studying for the SAT/ACT
Errr What????
OK…OK so studying for the SAT/ACT is not “technically” a “fun” summer-time project. BUT…if you want your student to get a jump on the fall testing-season, NOW is the time. You know other students are doing it…so carve the waves but also carve out a little time for SAT/ACT Prep!
Free $250 SAT and ACT Test Prep Courses The eKnowledge Donation Project with the US Navy is entering its 11
th year assisting Students and Families. The Project waives the
complete $250 course price for the SAT or ACT Test Prep Programs. So the student pays only the cost of delivering the program: DVD student fee of $17.55 for the cost of materials, support and shipping, Online Cloud student fee of $19.99 for student support and streaming. Pretty Gnarly! 225,000+ programs valued over $50 million have been donated at no profit to the company. Awesome!

“This program was fabulous for my daughter! She increased her ACT score by 5 points. She was able to qualify for a full tuition scholarship!” Holly Strong, Boy Scouts of America, April 27, 2015 “I have used these programs to benefit JROTC for many years. I appreciate the support in making a difference with my students who otherwise would not get this opportunity without your help and support." Kevin Mangan, US Army JROTC, Nov 5, 2014 “This is a really great program for Military children. I really appreciate the fact that the cost for my child to prepare to get into college is affordable. This will allow me to save some cash for College fees. Yours truly, Happy Military Mom” Sabria Drayton, Military.com, June 3, 2015
