CHANGE 4 A CHANGEThanks to all of the students and staff that supported our Change 4 A CHANGE 2014 Fundraiser.  Mrs. Robertson looks beautiful.  Special thanks to her, to Cato Fashions, to Sally's Beauty Supply, and to my sweet students.   Yes, it's way too early to put your name for down as a contestant for 2015. :) BUT.. Beginning Thursday, April 3rd, Cat's Meow - The Salon @ PHS is accepting after school appointments on Thursday and we will be open on May 10th for Prom Goodies.   You can schedule online 24/7 by visiting our website and following the link for appointments.  www.phscatsmeow.com

Dear PISD Family, I am kind of late getting started but many of you have asked and yes, we are having a Relay for Life team again this year at PHS. I also believe that Story Lions have a team again and I am so happy to be involved with such a great cause. If you are not familiar, Relay for Life is a great event that raises awareness of this terrible disease cancer, it helps raise a lot of money for research and help those in our community with travel to appointments, honors those who have survived and remembers those who have lost the battle. It is also a fun time in our community. You can help one of our two teams PHS or Story, or you can form your own team. If you need information of how to form a team, it's not too late. Please email me and I can give you more information. At Palestine High School, we have had a team for the past 11 years. We have raised over $40,000 over these years to help fight cancer. Yes, that's teachers and students doing all of that! There has been so much support over the years and I look forward to another great year. We can continue raising money throughout the year also. It's not over the night of Relay. This year's Relay for Life is May 3rd. It will be from noon to midnight this year and it will be held at Westwood High School's field. There are so many ways you can help even if you are not on a team. We have a concession stand the night of Relay that we need stocked, we sell bracelets, we have a class competition, we sell luminaria's in honor or in memory of someone and you can also just come out and join the fun that day and evening!I truly appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to read this. There are many of our staff and family members who have struggled with cancer and this is a way for us all to rally around them.So mark your calendars and know that we need all of you to make a big impact. Sincerely, Judy Hobbs, Breast cancer survivor (11+ years)

On Thursday, March 20th, 7th grade Science students took a field trip to the Ross Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas. Students had a great time seeing all the spectacular exhibits. The exhibits at the museum included The Solar System, which was about the planets, dwarf planets, sound waves and even the color spectrum (which they really enjoyed creating colors, one of their favorite exhibits). Another exhibit they really enjoyed was Sports Hall. This exhibit let them test their speed against a Cheetah. The museum also has a theatre in which our students had the opportunity to watch a 3D film called Bugs. Students also participated in a scavenger hunt that included questions in which the answers were found in different exhibits. Our kids had a wonderful time exploring all the different things The Ross Perot Museum of Nature and Science had to offer.

7th Grade Science Field Trip

Our 7TH grade STEM students have been learning about science and how to solve problems involving architecture and art. Through the Beesley Project, students had been watching videos on how the structure was built and its functions. Our kids had the opportunity to Skype with Mr. Philip Beesley, a professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo, in Ontario, Canada and ask him questions about his structure. Students also had the opportunity to connect and share tips with Canadian students who are also working on the same project. The Tyler Morning Telegraph wrote an article about our students and how they have connected with the Canadians on this project. Feel free to read more about this article on The Tyler Morning Telegraph website. Breakfast for Parents

Story recently celebrated Texas Public Schools Week by hosting breakfast for parents and an Open House.

Our students recently heard from Reggie Dixon, a former Harlem Globetrotter. He posed a math question to our students: What are the odds of an individual getting to play a professional sport as a career? What role does education play in a successful life? While speaking on this important topic, he also entertained our students with basketball skills and fun tricks.

Celebrating Story Style

What are the Odds?

Students are “Diving into Learning” here at Southside Elementary!

It is a period of educational war. Rebel Schools, striking from a local district, have won their first victory against the evil Standardized Testing Empire! During the battle, Rebel Principals managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAAR TEST, an armored assessment with enough power to destroy an entire school district. This week Southside Elementary students were “USING THE FORCE” as they participated in the JEDI ACADEMY.

WECC students have been looking forward to flying kites this week. It might have been a little cool outside but the kites flew high in the sky. We flew kites, counted and sorted kites, wrote stories about kites, designed our own kites and even talked about what kind of weather is needed to fly a kite. We now know everything there is to know about kites.

One little kite in the sky so blue,Along came another, then there were two.Two little kites flying high above me;Along came another, then there were three.Three little kites, just watch them soar,Along came another, then there were four.Four little kites, so high and alive,Along came another, then there were five.Five little kites dancing ‘cross the sky,What a sight to see, way up so high!
