ELLSWORTH - "We played our best game of the year," said Ellsworth girls' basket- ball coach Ike Boss, after the Lancers played northern Michigan powerhouse Gay- lord St. Mary's Nov. 12. The Lancers ended the game 12 points behind the Snowbirds, 42-54. "The score was only 21-20 at halftime. ' said Boss. "It was a really exciting game, and we were close to them for three and a half quarters. But we got a little behind, a little panicked, and we collapsed against their press. Then they went in there and made their spread. They're ranked third in the state for good reason." The Lancers ended the re- gular season with two bang-up important games. After pack- ing the Ellsworth gym for the St. Mary's game, they played their third and final contest of the season against Johannes- burg-Lewisajn Tiesday night. Ellsworth went into the Jo- Burg game assured of the Northern l^akes Conference title, but the outcome of the game determined whether or not they would have to share first place. Ellswortn enters district tournament play tonight in Central Lake as the favorite among the six teams compet- ing The Lancers will play Alba at 8 in the first round of the three-part tournament. The second round of games will take place Saturday night, beginning at 6:30. Finals will be Tuesday, Nov. 24, begin- ning at 7:30. Wildcats scratch Loggers ALBA - As Alba's girl's bas- ketball coach Chuck Mungall put it, the Wildcats "scratched and clawed" their way to a 54-45 victory over the Boyne Falls Loggers Nov. 12. "We have a good rivalry with Boyne Falls," said Mun- gall. "There were a lot of fast breaks and a lot of steals, a rough game.' It was the final conference game for Alba, which ended the season with a 3-7 varsity record in the Northern Lakes Conference, and a 7-8 overall record for the varsity. Julie Haines and Crystal Eckert fouled out in the last two minutes of the game, leaving Alba with only four players on the floor. "Connie Gendregske had a really great game," said Mungall, "and got her most points of the season, 24." An- other Wildcat player in double figures was Carolyn Coger with 11. Cindy Wubbels turned in an all-around performance for Alba, earning nine points, completing eight assists, and grabbing 13 rebounds. The Alba junior varsity, also coached by Mungall, lost to Boyne Falls 20-19. But they ended the season in second place in the conference, with a 8-5 overall record. The Albs, varsity dropped one to Alanson Nov. 10, 43-31. "The story of that game was free throws," said Mungall. "Alanson to>k 35, and we took one." Cindy and Julie fouled out in the Alanson game. "We had a hard time stopping their Dawn Gerber," said the coach. However, the JV's won their contest win Alanson 26-20, adding it to their total of eight victories for the season. In a Nov. 5 game in Alba, Wolverine had to forfeit the junior varsity contest, be- cause injuries left them with only three players. Both teams combined varsity and JV squads for one big game, which Alba won over dis- pirited Wolverine 56-21. "We had ten girls on our combined varsity, and all ten scored," said Mungall Wild- cats in double figures included Anita Hoogerhyde, ten points, Cindy, 13; and Carolyn, ten. Alba ended the regular sea- son with a non-conference bout against Mancelona Tues- day. Ending the season play- ing against each other has be- come a tradition for both teams. "It's a big game for us, and we really look forward to it," said Mungall.     The Alba junior varsity, also coached by Mungall, lost to Boyne Falls 20-19. But they ended the season in second place in the conference, with a 8-5 overall record.

    The Albs, varsity dropped

    one to Alanson Nov. 10, 43-31. "The story of that game was free throws," said Mungall. "Alanson to>k 35, and we took one."

    Cindy and Julie fouled out in the Alanson game. "We had a hard time stopping their Dawn Gerber," said the coach.

    However, the JV's won their contest win Alanson 26-20, adding it to their total of eight victories for the season.

    In a Nov. 5 game in Alba, Wolverine had to forfeit the junior varsity contest, be-cause injuries left them with only three players. Both teams combined varsity and JV squads for one big game,

    which Alba won over dis-pirited Wolverine 56-21.

    "We had ten girls on our combined varsity, and all ten scored," said Mungall Wild-cats in double figures included Anita Hoogerhyde, ten points, Cindy, 13; and Carolyn, ten.

    Alba ended the regular sea-son with a non-conference bout against Mancelona Tues-day. Ending the season play-ing against each other has be-come a tradition for both teams. "It's a big game for us, and we really look forward to it," said Mungall.

    Alba and Ellsworth will play tonight at 8 in the opening round of district tournaments in Central Lake.

    This is the highest known scratch game bowled by one of our association bowlers.
