Wilderness First Responder (WFR) 5-Day Course What to Expect: The 5 Day WFR course is an intensive educational experience. Due to the accelerated nature of this course, it is paramount that students show up to course having completed their pre-course work and be fully prepared to engage in the curriculum. Evenings will be spent studying and completing case studies. Students are strongly encouraged to take good care of themselves by staying hydrated and eating well throughout the day. You will be one of anywhere between 12 and 21 students working together to learn. This will be the first medical course for some students, while others will have taken several courses before and may be using this course as a recertification for their WFR. Course Devotion: At least nine hours per day will be spent in the classroom and in the field. There are homework assignments each night including reading and case studies. It is not possible to be involved in any significant activity outside the course. 100% attendance is required (see Course Participation Standards). Students are expected to participate in all practical skills sessions (see Functional Position Statement). Course Start/End: The classroom will be open around 7am with the course beginning promptly at 8:00am every day. The ending time will be approximately 6pm. However, our actual wrap-up time depends on a number of variables. There may be a night simulation as well. Required Pre-Course Work: All students must read the entire WFR textbook, complete and print the WFR Study Guide and Case Studies in its entirety (bring it to course start) and take an online exam at least four days before course start. A course textbook will be mailed to your registration address. Students have found that filling in the WFR Study Guide while reading through the textbook to be beneficial. You should score 70 percent or higher on the exam to be adequately prepared for the course. The test may be taken only once, so be well prepared before attempting the exam. The online exam can be found at: https://www.wildmed.com/wlitest/ The password to access the test is: WLI After you take the online exam, review the questions you got wrong and study as needed. What to Bring: Come prepared with adequate clothing for the weather and time of year. We will be outside (rain or shine) during the day/evening (bring a headlamp). Students must have a pair of sturdy closed-toed shoe to where during drills. Each student is required to bring one full set of old clothing that may be used during a first aid simulation. The clothes will be cut up, thrashed, mangled and stained (there will be bush whacking). Please bring pants, shirt, etc. that will be sufficient to keep you warm for long periods of time while lying on the ground without insulation. Students should also bring a good sized (45L+) personal back- pack and any other personal equipment they would like to use during a simulation. Custodial Responsibilities: Students are expected to pitch in to keep our learning environments clean and organized. This includes monitoring trash and recycling, organizing tables and chairs, doing your dishes, etc. We strive towards minimizing our impact as much as possible. Bring insulated mugs instead of disposable cups, etc. Restrictions:

! Cell phones must be silenced, and all calls/texts must take place only during breaks. ! Pets are not allowed at the teaching site, this includes leashing them outside. ! There is no smoking within 200 feet of the classroom and camping sites.
