Greetings to all!

2020 has been an interesting year, to say the least! Instead of returning to Snowmass, Colorado, the WMS Summer Conference will be held virtually! This is a new venture for our organization, but one we are excited about. Virtual conferences will not replace our summer or winter events in the future; but this may open the doors for even more opportunities to broaden the knowledge and experience of WMS members. Unfortunately, we will miss out on the camaraderie of spontaneous shared meals and pub crawls, but we will not miss out on fantastic lectures and opportunities to enhance our skills.

The conference will open with a virtual reception. Choose your location, favorite beverage, and catch up with your colleagues. Share where you are…who knows where we will all attend from. Will it be home? The backcountry? Or some farther flung locale? We look forward to mapping it out. The virtual event will open the conference to those who normally would not be able to travel for the meeting. Who will be participating from farthest away?

We have a broad slate of topics this summer – ranging from the physiology of depth to the challenges of space. We’ve listened to your feedback. We have a mix of new and legacy presenters – all experts in their fields. There are many core topics for those pursuing their FAWM. Our keynote speaker, Stephen Robinson PhD - a veteran of four space shuttle missions – has worked at an altitude of 400,000, a most extreme wilderness.

While we won’t all be in the same place – we will all be together. The opportunity to form personal and professional relationships is still there. This conference is also an opportunity to earn 24 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.

Help us make this first WMS virtual conference one of our best conferences.

2020 Virtual Summer Conference Program OverviewThe WMS annual conferences are targeted toward medical professionals who engage in wilderness activities, who counsel individuals who take part in such activities, or who practice in locations in which they are likely to encounter individuals who have been injured in such activities.

The WMS virtual conference will be an interactive format with a live chat feature, instant polls and live Q&A sessions. You’ll therefore get the exceptional education that you’ve come to expect from the WMS to enhance your wilderness medicine knowledge and skills, and now get the added benefit of accessing this education from the comfort of your home or office. Highlights of the conference include 24 unique wilderness medicine presentations with CME and FAWM credit, a keynote address by Stephen K. Robinson, “A True Wilderness – Working at an Altitude of 400,000 Meters,” plus a research and poster session, an online workout class, and a virtual exhibit hall.

Keynote: “A True Wilderness - Working at an Altitude of 400,000 Meters”Stephen Robinson, PhD | Wednesday, July 22 | 6:45-7:45 PM

Stephen Robinson, PhD, spent 37 years at NASA in various roles. Dr. Robinson flew on four space shuttle missions, including three spacewalks, visited the ISS twice, trained as a Cosmonaut in Star City, Russia, and has extensive expertise in spacecraft systems, human/systems integration, operational safety, space robotics, aerodynamics, and fluid physics. Robinson is now a tenured professor in the UC Davis Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, directing the Human/Robotic/Vehicle Integration and Performance Lab. He was also recently appointed Director of the UC Davis Center for Spaceflight Research.Dr. Robinson has received numerous awards, including NASA’s highest honor - the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and UC Davis’ highest honor – the UC Davis Medal. Robinson is a

UC Davis alumnus in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and received his M.S. and Ph.D. in turbulence physics from Stanford University in Mechanical and Aero/Astro Engineering.
