Barking Dogs in Wildhorse The HOA receives many calls from residents regarding excessive barking from neighboring dogs. In an ideal world, dogs would never bark unless they were told to. Unfortunately our pets have a mind, and personality, of their own. When faced with an unruly four-legged neighbor, the first step should always be to kindly approach your two-legged neighbor and inform them of your situation. Many times, the owners are unaware of the nuisance and will find ways to manage their pet’s outbursts. If this is unsuccessful, contact Spectrum and report the occurrence, and be prepared to provide the address of the pet in question. The HOA bylaws limit the number and type of pets allowed (2 adult dogs, cats) and do not specifically address barking dogs. Because of this, the HOA will send a courtesy letter to the homeowner in question to alert the owner that their pet is disturbing neighbors. If this does not work here are other resources to consider:• Bexar County Animal Control Services (ACS): 210.207.6650

– call ACS for some advice especially if you believe the pet might be in danger.

• Bexar County Sheriff: 210.335.6000 – you also have the option to get a Bexar County Sheriff involved by contacting this non-emergency number.

• Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center (DRC): 210.335.2128 – if all else fails, you may want to contact the DRC and explain the situation. According to their website http://www.co.bexar.tx.us/drc/, this organization deals with issues of disturbances of the peace and the mediation services provided are free to the public.

Though seemingly daunting, it is possible to resolve these issues civilly if pet owners remain mindful that the canine chorus from their beloved pets may disturb neighbors considering the close proximity of homes in Wildhorse. Also, those who find these outbursts disturbing should keep in mind that these are our neighbors, for better or worse, and a little bit of tolerance can go a long way towards maintaining a harmonious atmosphere for everyone.

WILDHORSEAn Opinion About Door Frame Security

There have been reports of break-ins in Wildhorse and as a resident I would like to share with you a product I found designed to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim. Now let me say that I am not a sales person, I have no association with the manufacturer, and I have not tried other products on the market. As such, I cannot comment on the merits of competing products on the market or the reputation of the manufacturer. However, allow me to share my experience.

While interviewing home security sales people, a common finding was that the door jamb in our homes was not sufficient to stop an intruder from kicking in a door. This problem is not limited to Wildhorse, but to most standard homes with door jambs made of pine. There are two contributing factors. The door jamb is not reinforced. And the metal plates in door frame that make contact with the deadbolt and door knob latch, a.k.a the strike plates use 1” screws.

A simple fix suggested by the majority of security salespeople was to replace the 1” screws with 2 to 2.5” screws at both the the strike plates for the deadbolt and door latch, as well as the hinge screws for the door frame (approximately 16 in all). This serves to reinforce the strength of these plates and make the door more difficult to kick in. The product I found, StrikeMaster II Pro, takes this one step further

by replacing the strike plates and overlaying five feet of the door frame with a steel brace. It also allows for 10 screws along the door frame to redistribute the forces of a potential kick in. There is a very noticeable difference now as my door now closes with a satisfying “thump” and does not even move while attempting to shake it.

Installation should be easy, taking approximately 30 minutes. However, my install took extra time because my door alarm sensor was covered by the strike plate; I had to cut extra holes to accommodate the sensor. I would classify this as a do-it-yourself project which requires a screwdriver (preferably power), and possibly a drill to make a hole for the alarm sensor.

The product retails for approximately $80 but I found it slightly cheaper at online retailers. You can find more information at the company website http://www.nokickins.com/. The price seems a little high if you consider that our homes have at least 2 entry doors. Bur after considering the security of my family, this is a bargain. Hopefully you will look into improving your own door security, and perhaps we can make Wildhorse less desirable target for potential burglars. Signed,A concerned neighbor
