Welcome to Wildwood

Page 3: Wildwood 2012 Brochure

Wildwood offers one- or two-week sessions of overnight camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 14. At Wildwood, the environment is fun and noncompetitive: each camper is an important part of the community and is valued and respected for his or her interests and contributions.

When campers arrive at Wildwood, they choose an Interest Group (IG) activity, which they’ll participate in each morning, allowing time to explore their favorite subject in-depth with an experienced naturalist. In the afternoon, campers will choose from a variety of Discovery Group (DG) activities, so every day brings new experiences. Later in the day during Open Activity Time (OATs), campers can head to the waterfront for swimming and boating, play a friendly game of basketball or volleyball at our recreational field, take a guided hike through the forest, express their creativity at the Arts & Crafts Center, or simply relax on the beach while enjoying the view and writing a letter home—the choice is theirs!

Page 5: Wildwood 2012 Brochure

At Wildwood, you’ll live in a sturdy platform tent or cabin within a unit— a group of 12 to 24 campers and three to five counselors. Each cluster of tents or cabins, filled with friends new and old, has restroom facilities nearby and centrally located showers just down the path. Every day, you’ll have opportunities to grow in your independence with the support of the entire Wildwood community.

Check out a typical day at camp to see what excitement awaits you!

7:15 am (optional)Early risers can join us for a “PBJ,” our Pre-Breakfast Jaunt. How about a Polar Bear Swim, our most popular PBJ? Now you’re awake!

8:00 amAfter everyone’s up, we head to the Dining Hall for a hearty breakfast and announcements.

9:00 amYour daily Interest Group, or IG as we like to call it, is an activity that you’ll choose on your first day of camp and participate in each morning. If you enroll in a two-week session, you’ll choose a different IG each week.

NoonAfter you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s time for lunch. You’re sure to look forward to mealtime at Wildwood since we offer hearty, healthy, and delicious fare—and there’s always a vegetarian option.

1:00 pmSiesta. Write a letter home, take a nap, or just spend some time contemplating what you’ve seen and done at Wildwood.

2:00 pmEnjoy the exciting Discovery Group (DG) of your choice. Different DGs are offered each day!

4:00 pmYou’re free to choose an activity on the spot during Open Activity Time (OATs). Play Frisbee on the field, go for a swim, kayak with a friend, or get creative with arts and crafts and then go canoeing—it’s up to you!

6:00 pmAfter OATs, head to the Dining Hall for a scrumptious dinner.

7:00 pmThe day is winding down, and it’s time for an all-camp evening program, which could be anything from a campfire sing-along to a game of capture the flag.

Wildwood’s exciting Teen Adventure Trips are designed to immerse teens in the natural wonders of some of New England’s most beautiful areas and to provide fun, appropriate challenges for teens with all levels of outdoor experience. Trip groups are coed and consist of two leaders and five to eight campers. With a focus on learning about the environment, teens gain valuable experience and skills in hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, biking, and low-impact camping. (If a trip itinerary includes bicycling, teens should already be able to ride a bicycle.) After a day of group building and orientation, teen campers and their trip leaders leave the base camp at Monadnock Conservation Center (Wildwood’s home) and head into the wilds of New England. Along the way, they meet with environmental professionals and naturalists to learn firsthand about natural science and conservation. Each trip group also completes a brief service project, allowing teens to leave a positive mark on one of the special places they visit.

We will hike along the granite slopes of Cadillac Mountain and bicycle on the carriage roads of the park. Watch for whales, seals, eagles, and other wildlife while kayaking along the coves and rocky shores. Spend the afternoon with your friends at one of the park’s awesome beaches, and then share stories of your adventures around a cozy campfire. From hiking to kayaking, and biking to beachcombing, this trek has it all!

Bike and Beach trekCape Cod and Nantucket Island July 8 - July 14Explore two of New England’s premier coastal destinations on this trip to Cape Cod and Nantucket.

We’ll bike along the beaches and dunes of the Cape and meet up with biologists who are studying animals and plants unique to the region. The group will also enjoy a guided kayak trip in Barnstable Bay. Then we’ll travel to Nantucket Island to discover its marshes, beaches, and woodlands. Finally, we’ll round out this coastal experience with a ride along gorgeous bike paths and a relaxing afternoon on the beach. This trek is all about sand, sun, and fun!

Footloose in the White MountainsNew Hampshire White Mountains July 15 - July 21Have the time of your life on this hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing adventure in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. We’ll spend a couple of fun days with local professional rock climbing guides to learn about and experience this popular activity. Then, we’ll keep an eye out for moose, beavers, loons, and more as we travel into the heart of the backcountry for an unforgettable overnight in the wilderness. If you’re looking for an exhilarating hiking and climbing trip in a spectacular setting, this trek is for you.

Exploring the Champlain valleyVermont Green Mountains July 22 - July 28Camp and hike through the pristine beauty of this magnificent area and explore the shores of New England’s largest body of freshwater, Lake Champlain. Witness spectacular views from high atop Vermont’s Green Mountains and discover woodlands, wetlands, and a landscape shaped by the glaciers thousands of years ago. Next, spend a couple of exciting days on Lake Champlain, exploring its unique freshwater ecology while rowing and camping along local islands. A refreshing dip at the end of a hot day and evenings around the campfire promise cool times on this tremendous trek.

Maine Wilderness AdventureAugust 5 - August 12Hike through a corner of Maine’s spectacular wilderness on this new eight-day exploration of Baxter State Park and the Mount Katahdin region. The Penobscot name “Katahdin” translates to The Greatest Mountain; and, at 5,268 feet above sea level, Katahdin is the tallest peak in Maine. The pristine habitat is an ideal location for observing wildlife, including black bears, deer, loons, and moose. On this adventure, you’ll experience waterfalls, summits, and swimming holes; a peaceful dusk canoe trip; and a thrilling white water journey on the Penobscot River. The memories you create during this week of hiking, camping, and backpacking will last a lifetime!

Newfoundland ExpeditionJuly 14 - July 29Explore the natural wonders of Newfoundland! Experience its rugged landscape—home to caribou, moose, eagles, whales, and some of the largest seabird colonies in the world. Witness the breathtaking vistas high atop its mountains and venture along the bold coast that surrounds this beautiful island. A special visit to L’Anse aux Meadows will allow participants to see the only authenticated site of a Viking settlement in North America.

You’ll explore a variety of natural places through day hikes, leisurely biking, scenic canoeing, coastal kayaking, and more. Our evenings will be spent tenting at group site campgrounds. Participants should be at least 16 years old or have had previous experience in Wildwood’s teen trip program, feel comfortable in the outdoors, and be able to ride a bike. A passport is required. leaders- In-training

Participants in Wildwood’s Leaders-In-Training (LIT) program develop leadership skills within an environmental context. Our LIT program goes above and beyond the “Counselors-In-Training” programs offered at most summer camps, giving teens practical experience that enables them to be leaders in both their communities and the environmental arena.

Designed for mature teens entering grades 10 to 12, this unique program combines a fun summer camp experience with leadership development and special activities that teach key concepts including the three elements of Mass Audubon’s mission: conservation, education, and advocacy. During the first year of the LIT program, participants gain important environmental and personal leadership skills. A second year allows teens to further develop those skills through advanced challenges and experiences, providing them with the tools to make positive changes for the future.

At the beginning of each session, participants set goals for their experience and then work with the guidance and support of their LIT leaders to accomplish the challenges and tasks that will help them achieve those goals. Throughout the session, participants have the opportunity to take on leadership roles within the Wildwood program, which may include facilitating a short environmental education activity and helping senior counselors care for younger campers. The program culminates with an environmental service project at Wildwood or in the surrounding community.

Family Camp is family fun for campers of all ages! Whether this is your first time camping or the first time in a while, Wildwood has just what you need to enjoy some quality family time in a safe, quiet, and beautiful natural setting. Bring the whole family—from toddlers to grandparents—to explore nature, spend quality time together, and meet other families who enjoy camping and playing outside. Each family group lives in their own rustic cabin, yurt, or platform tent.

Create lasting memories as you encourage and support each other on the ropes course and share stories and laughter while roasting s’mores around the campfire. A variety of fun, age-appropriate activity options are always available. Swimming, kayaking, nature crafts, hiking, birding, and campfire songs and stories are definitely on the schedule. If reading on the beach with a glass of iced tea while the kids play is more your style, that’s fine too! Family Camp is also a great way for parents to introduce future Wildwood overnight campers to all the fun and excitement Wildwood has to offer.

Wildwood Staff

Wildwood’s staff includes educators, college students, and naturalists, all dedicated mature adults who work to foster a sense of community and make sure your camper has the best summer experience possible. They come to us from across the United States and all over the world. We select staff members who have experience working with children and a strong desire to share their knowledge. In addition to benefiting from the many counselor-naturalists, campers also glean specialized knowledge from lifeguards and boating specialists, trained rope course facilitators, and other specialists.

Wildwood’s staff complete background and reference checks and begin preparing for their summer with independent instruction when they are hired, and an intensive weeklong training before the start of camp. This includes training in child development and supervision, health and safety procedures, local natural history information, and environmental education teaching techniques.

Our staff strives to keep campers happy, healthy, and safe during their time at Wildwood. Counselors are required to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications prior to camp. We also have around-the-clock, licensed, health care staff on-site, as well as access to an on-call pediatric practice and nearby Monadnock Community Hospital.

Our Fearless leaderWildwood Director Bob Speare spent his childhood summers at a place very similar to Wildwood. The important connections he made with the natural world and the impact his experiences had helped to shape his future. Bob has been working for Mass Audubon for over 19 years as a naturalist, environmental educator, and camp director. Over these years, he has shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for the outdoors with thousands of campers, families, and adults. Bob finds Wildwood to be the perfect place to teach and learn together with campers who will ultimately become our future leaders. Bob is always available to answer your questions or chat about the Wildwood program. Feel free to contact him at [email protected] or 781-259-2180.

Mass Audubon works to protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. Together with more than 100,000 members, we care for 34,000 acres of conservation land, provide educational programs for 225,000 children and adults annually, and advocate for sound environmental policies at local, state, and federal levels. Mass Audubon’s mission and actions have expanded since our beginning in 1896 when our founders set out to stop the slaughter of birds for use on women’s fashions. Today we are the largest conservation organization in New England. Our statewide network of wildlife sanctuaries, in 90 Massachusetts communities, welcomes visitors of all ages and serves as the base for our work.
