Why?Who: The Pioneer Valley CommunityStudents, Teachers, Parents, Staff, Custodians, Community Members, All Things Living12 students. 3 working groups. 3 Amherst Elementary Schools.Principal: Nick Yaffe Head of Facilities: Ron BohonowiczWhat: Permaculture Garden Design and Implementation Where: Where should this years installment be?When: Class ends in May. Then what?Why: To extend the UMass Permaculture Initiative to the greater Community.

Goals ArticulationOngoing processHow to involve as much of the community as possible.Garden should be easily accessible for teachers to use for class.Facilities Maintenance concerns are snow removal, mowing, bees and hornets (from the apple trees that were planted last year), and are willing to help with installation but not maintenance.Long Term Sustainability

Site Analysis and AssessmentLast year 2 apple trees were planted in from of the school.Teachers have voiced a need for a safe route to walk to kids to the garden.Behind the school is an open grass field that doesnt drain well and is used as a recess play areaThe perimeter of the site has more sloping topographyThere are multiple spigots for water.Some pre-existing shade trees, but a need for more for summer programs.
