GUIDE TO THE EOLA-AMITY HILLS • 1
The Willamette Valley is not only beautiful, it is one of the few places on earth where Pinot noir can perfectly ripen and produce wines of exquisite quality. This demanding grape requires a precise balance of warm days, cools nights, exposure, and soil to achieve greatness. It also requires careful nurturing in the vineyards and a careful handling during its transformation into wine.
Each of the AVAs of the Willamette Valley has its own personality. Each macro-climate creates a specific expression, on the grapes and in the wines. We invite you to the Eola-Amity Hills AVA to explore how our unique conditions affect our grapes and our wines.
You can walk the vineyards, look into the soil, meet the grape growers who spend months nurturing this finicky plant and spend time with award-winning winemakers to learn how they meet the challenge of site and vintage.
The Eola-Amity Hills is distinctly different than the other AVAs. The balance of warm days and rapid cooling at night from the ocean winds that blow in through the Van Duzer Corridor create a different balance in our fruit. Our soils are also different, usually thinner with both sedimentary and volcanic sites. This results in a different balance in the Eola-Amity Hills wines: a bit more acidity, a bit more structure, and sometimes a bit more of a darker and edgier personality. In short, it means Pinot noir that we are very proud to produce. Thank you for the opportunity to share our story and our wines.
It’s hard to express the beauty of the
Eola-Amity Hills in words. So we make wine.

1976
The first winery in the region was bonded in 1976 by Myron Redford and Janis Checchia who purchased Amity Vineyards in 1974. Bethel Heights began in 1977, followed by Stangeland in 1978 and Hidden Springs in 1980. Vic Winquist and Ron Seely had the foresight to develop Seven Springs, Temperance Hill, and Witness Tree vineyards, and plantings were begun at what are now Canary Hill, Elton Vineyards, Orchard Heights and Zenith Vineyard.
1984
The Willamette Valley was defined by the government as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). By this time 273 acres were under vine in the Eola-Amity Hills with four wineries in operation.
1985
A group of wineries and vineyards, led by Tom Dumm, founder of Glen Creek Winery, now known as Orchard Heights Winery, set out to define their region. They formed the Eola Hills Winegrowing Region.
2006
Six additional regions within the Willamette Valley received federal approval as new AVAs in 2005 and 2006, including the Eola-Amity Hills AVA in 2006. These were determined by unique soil and climate attributes.
PRESENT
Today, the Eola-Amity Hills provides ultra-premium grapes for Pinot noir sold by scores of wineries throughout the Willamette Valley and beyond. Within the appellation, over 3,000 acres are planted and 30 commercial wineries are now producing wine.
Janis Checchia and Myron Redford in the Vineyard, 1974
A HISTORY
1800s
Early pioneers named a village Eola in tribute to the powerful, predictable marine winds that blew through the Van Duzer Corridor. “Eola” is derived from Aeolus, the Greek deity otherwise known as “keeper of the winds.”
1933
Almost at the moment Prohibition was repealed, the Honeywood Winery began operating in Salem in late 1933. It has been operating continuously ever since.
1960s
Vitis Vinifera revolution began in Oregon. Richard Sommer planted Hillcrest Vineyards in the Umpqua Valley in 1961. The Willamette Valley began to take off in 1965 when David and Diana Lett planted the Eyrie Vineyards, and Charles and Shirley Coury established Coury Vineyards.
1971
Vinifera grapes made their way to the Eola-Amity Hills in 1971, when Jerry and Anne Preston planted Amity Vineyards. A year later, Bill Cattrall began planting Cattrall Vineyard. In 1973, Don and Carolyn Byard planted Eola Hills Vineyard, and Jim and Connie Feltz established Feltz Vineyard.
GUIDE TO THE EOLA-AMITY HILLS • 5GUIDE TO THE EOLA-AMITY HILLS • 4
SOILThin, volcanic clay soils from ancient lava flows are the
most common soil type in these hills. But it’s not unusual
to find outcroppings of other soil types here and there,
created by eons of violent geological activity. Ancient
marine sediments from the bottom of the ocean, and
young flood sediments from the last Ice Age can be found
intermittently throughout the appellation.
The predominant volcanic soils of the Eola-Amity Hills
are generally shallower and rockier than those of other
Willamette Valley AVAs, with significant effects on vine and
fruit development and balance. These thin soils also drain
quickly after rain, allowing fruit to hang on the vines long
into the fall for maximum flavor development.
Marine sediments were laid down on the floor of the Pacific Ocean Examples; Willakenzie, Bellpine, Chehulpum, Hazelair, Melbourne, Dupee
Volcanic Basalts originated as lava flows from eastern Oregon Examples; Jory, Nekia, Ritner, Saum, Witzel, Yamhill
Ice Age Loess is silt blown up from the valley floor onto northeast-facing hillsides Example; Laurelwood
Missoula Flood deposits brought down the Columbia Gorge as the result of a repeatedly melting glacial dam Examples; Wapato, Woodburn, Willamette, Concord, Helvetia, Helmick, Dayton
CLIMATEThe Climate of the Eola-Amity Hills is defined by the Van
Duzer Corridor, a break in the Coast Range that allows cool
ocean winds to flow, dropping temperatures dramatically,
especially during late summer afternoons. These late
afternoon and evening breezes help provide the cool nights
that keep acids firm and are essential for optimal ripening.
Because of the dominating effect of these marine winds
on our climate, the Eola-Amity Hills generally experience
cooler average temperatures during the growing season
than other parts of the Willamette Valley.

Authentique captures the essence of my family’s biodynamic and stellar organic farmed vineyard, Keeler Estate, planted on a southwest sloping hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. Our goal is to make the most beautiful, artistic expression of small lot Pinot noir and Chardonnay while pushing the boundaries of our capabilities each and every vintage. Diligently managed native and whole cluster fermentations in oak puncheons, demi muids and upright oak tanks are common in my wines. When you taste you’ll feel the soul, time and place of Authentique and understand that these wines are made with care for everything we do.

Regular Hours/Fees: Open year- round, Tuesday - Sunday 11am to 5pm; $10 tasting fee. Bethel Heights is the perfect place to take in the view of the Willamette Valley while tasting some of Oregon’s most highly acclaimed single vineyard Pinot noirs.
Gnarly old vines, geologically complex hillside soils, and direct impact from Æolian winds - all conspire to create highly energized wines with firm backbones, depth of character, and distinctive personalities. The original 50 acres of own- rooted Pinot noir and Chardonnay vines that we planted in the 70’s continue to provide the backbone of our estate grown wines, now in the hands of our second generation. Nine different bottlings of estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay each year barely begin to tell the tale…

WINERIES & TASTING ROOMS
Quietly rocking the world of Pinot noir.
When you’ve made the decision to spend your life making wine, you may think that you have an inkling of the difficulties it will present. Yet, when you’ve decided to make Pinot noir, with its hundreds of clones and fickle sensibilities, you better be passionate in your venture.
In your pursuit of world-class Pinot noir, it helps to be working with grapes from the Willamette Valley, and, if you’re truly fortunate, you might be working with grapes from the Eola-Amity Hills AVA where the ocean winds blow in through the Van Duzer Corridor and cause even the locals to keep their Pendleton blankets out well into July. This cool marine air makes the vines work harder and helps amplify Pinot’s lush and aromatic qualities.
But, despite the Eola-Amity Hills’ ideal location, rest assured that growing and making exceptional Pinot noir is a battle.
Do you pick your grapes early and count on a miracle in the barrel or do you wait longer for the fruit to further ripen and develop flavor yet risk autumn rains taking half of your crop? Both tough and delicate decisions.
Fortunately, the people who make wine here are as tough and stubborn as the vines themselves. They work hard, they take calculated risks, they suffer for their art, and as a result of it all, they make wines that have been rocking the world, quietly. Because, unless you’re a critic, you want to keep something this good a secret as long as you can.

Cristom Vineyards began in 1992 as a collaboration between three men: an engineer, a biochemist, and a farmer, each possessing a deep-rooted respect for the land, the natural winemaking process, and Pinot noir. Nearly a quarter of a century later, our winemaker Steve Doerner and vineyard manager Mark Feltz still tend these fields and produce our elegant, dynamic wines, while second-generation proprietor Tom Gerrie carries on his family’s legacy.

Founded in 1986 by Russ and Mary Raney, Evesham Wood has produced balanced, terroir driven wines for almost 30 years. The estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, has been farmed organically for nearly two decades and obtained organic certification in 2000. In 2007 Erin Nuccio came to Evesham Wood to apprentice under Russ and to produce his Haden Fig wines. Three years later, Erin was asked by the Raneys to take over Evesham Wood and carry on its legacy. Erin is committed to keeping Evesham Wood’s tradition alive by focusing on hands-off winemaking, the exclusive use of dry-farmed vineyards and sustainable/organic viticulture.

Historically, Seven Springs Vineyard, first planted in 1983, has produced some of the finest grapes grown in the United States. Wine Spectator recognized the 2012 Evening Land Seven Springs La Source Pinot noir, rated 98 points, as the No. 3 wine of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2015. This marks Evening Land’s fourth inclusion in the prestigious Top 100.
Seven Springs Vineyard is dry-farmed using biodynamic practices, is LIVE certified and has been fully converted to organic and biodynamic farming practices since 2007. Taking advantage of the unique terroir, the vineyards potential is explored by mixing old vines and new plantings, blending distinct blocks, with micro-cuvées that lie on the volcanic soils in the heart of the Seven Springs hillside. Come see it all and taste why Seven Springs Vineyard is truly such a special place.

Fossil & Fawn is just a few people (3 members of the Fischer family and one Mosbacher), who are all basically related, trying to do a fairly reasonable thing - have fun while making seriously good wine from just one vineyard site - Crowley Station Vineyards. We aren’t too interested in bold manifestos or style declarations - our goal is to make wines that we like. We’ve found that the kind of wines we like, and thus the wines we make, are executed with a natural approach that allows the vineyard to do the talking. The Oregonian and SIP Northwest Magazine have called us “a rising star” and “best newcomer.” We think that’s pretty cool, maybe you will too.

Helioterra Wines is a small, artisan producer of Northwest wines made at Björnson Vineyard in Salem, Oregon. Our wines are pretty, elegant and graceful in style. Winemaker Anne Ebenretier Hubatch partners with exceptional regional vineyard growers to craft wines that demonstrate the best that the Northwest offers. The name draws on geological inspirations, symbolizing Heliolite, the Oregon state gemstone (more commonly known as Sun Stone). Helio and Terra combine the Greek words for sun and earth, natural partners for grape growing.

Balanced, textured, and redolent of place: these are qualities we’ve pursued in our winemaking since our first vintage in 2002. Working with seven organic and sustainable vineyards in the Willamette Valley, our wines ferment naturally to capture the nuances of the year, the vine and the land. Focusing on grape varieties with a legacy in the Willamette Valley - namely Pinot noir and Pinot blanc - we also seek to showcase the potential of emerging varieties like Melon de Bourgogne and Gamay. Situated on a crest of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA overlooking the Coastal Range, our friendly tasting room offers a range of current and older vintages, as well as light snacks. We look forward to welcoming you!

Lingua Franca is the culmination of Larry Stone’s life-long quest to find a great vineyard site and make wine. He has joined forces with talented winemaker Thomas Savre and consulting winemaker, Burgundy icon, Dominique Lafon to produce nuanced and flavorful wines from the exceptionally located LSV estate vineyards and other outstanding vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley. LSV (Larry Stone/Lone Star Road Vineyard) has the stony, volcanic soils, steep slopes, cooling, gentle breezes and soft early morning sun that make for the excellent fruit and mineral expression in our wines. We coddle the vines with Biodynamic preparations and meticulous attention to vine health, shoot positioning, gentle pruning protocols and moderate yields. Our intention is to leave the soils abundant and healthy with an entire universe of micro-organisms, fungi, birds, plants and native insects that will provide the best environment for the vines as well as bestowing us with natural beauty.

With muddy boots on our feet and world-class Pinot in our hands...
The grapes grown in the Eola-Amity Hills region aren’t just made into wine here; they are coveted and bought by award -winning winemakers all over the Northwest.
It’s not just the soil. It’s not even entirely about the expert growers.
It’s about the cool nights in the region, thanks to the ocean winds that blow in through the Van Duzer Corridor forcing the grapes to work harder. That means more concentration, more acidity, more balance —in short, it means Pinot noir that’s awfully hard to beat.
Vineyard Manager Dai Crisp checks the crop health in the organically farmed Temperance Hill Vineyard.
