The Forbidden Classroom
“Ha-Ha!” laughed Nicky and Hanna together. Nicky and Hanna were best friends. They’d been friends since kindergarten. They were walking through the corridors of their high school during break. It was so quiet with no noises, no slamming of lockers, no stampedes trying to get to class. They were walking while they were talking when Nicky an adventure-loving risk-taking short girl with green eyes and long brown hair, said “It feels weird in here.” “I totally agree” replied Hanna, a girl of average height with blue eyes and long dark black hair. She was very different to Nicky – quiet, and liked to stay safe and not take risks. Suddenly out of nowhere Nicky said “why don’t we go inside the forbidden classroom and see what is inside? Nobody is around, no one will see. Come on.” She started to run down the hall to the old part of school. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” asked Hanna, a little cautiously. “It will be fine, come on worrywart,” said Nicky, still running ahead. They finally reached the room. The door was locked. “Oh what a shame we can’t get into the forbidden room” said Hanna sarcastically as she started walking off. “Hey. What luck! I have a bobby pin I can pick the lock,” said Nicky ignoring Hanna’s sarcastic comment. With a little bit of a twist and turn the door opened. “Ha we got in!” screeched Nicky excitedly. She was so happy she ran in without thinking and turned on the light. Hanna listened from the hallway to Nicky. “Wow! You have to see this. Come quick Hanna.” Han-na slowly entered the room watching her step. “Cool” said Hanna. “I told you it would be fun to see.” “But why do they call it the forbidden classroom?” asked Hanna. “Nobody knows. Rumour has it there was a ghost but nobody thinks it’s true. Who cares, let’s explore and find some answers.” The girls started to look around. Hanna called out “Nicky I think I’ve found something.” Nicky rushed up and stopped in front of a big hole next to Hanna. It had a giant world globe with a remote floating eerily beside it. “What is it?” asked Han-na. “No idea. Only one way to find out” said Nicky. “You grab the remote.” There were two big buttons, one green and the other red. One said “GO” and another said “BACK.” Hanna pressed go. A voice came. It sound-ed like a robot. “Please choose a country on globe and then touch” so they did. “Where do you want to go?” asked Nicky “I love gelati so let’s go to ITALY!” She touched Italy. Everything went black and they were being sucked into a portal. They were being swirled around like they were in a washing machine. Round and round they went. They landed with a bump, everything with snow around it. “Italy! we’re in Italy!” screeched Hanna, “come on lets go.” “We’re in Milan!” They started walking. “Have a look over there; it’s the Arch of Peace. Isn’t it beauti-ful?” gasped Hanna. “Yes and look at all the traffic and all the cars and people. Isn’t it amazing! I’m hungry, is there anywhere to eat?” asked Nicky. “Nicky, it’s Italy! Of course there are places to eat. Come let’s get pizza and gelati, there is a store right over there.” They had a wonderful lunch. Hanna glanced at her watch, “Oh no we have three minutes to get back to school and get to humanities!” So they ran out of the cafe. Hanna pressed the back button and just like that they were sucked up in two seconds and were back at school. “That was so cool!” said Hanna. “Come on let’s go quickly. After lunch we’ll come back, but don’t tell anyone. Let’s keep it a secret!” Running back to class they arrived just in time to avoid a detention. The girls were so excited they couldn’t stop wriggling and moving about during humanities. They could barely
concentrate. Mrs Baloan was going on about China and the pandas being endangered, and how people were
trying to save them. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the bell rang. It was lunch. Nicky looked at
Hanna and Hanna looked at Nicky then said “wouldn’t the pandas in China be cute?” Then the girls ran out
and headed to the forbidden classroom..

Grade 5/6B Today, GTAC came to our school
for the second time. We did some
experiments that helped us to find
out about how DNA works.
We put on our lab coats and we
learnt about the consistency of the
mucus of somebody who has Cystic
Fibrosis and the mucus of a person
who is healthy. We got to make
some mucus using Golden Syrup,
salt, gelatine & water. It was very
interesting.
The topic that we were learning
about was called “The Genetic Lot-
tery”. We learnt about DNA sam-
ples, molecules, mucus, genes

It started as a usual Friday in winter……
The Grade 3-6 teachers madly tried to keep students focussed on their work, as all students watched the clock, willing for 12pm to come fast-
er….Angelica sat chewing on her pen, wondering how may times Alana would fall over in the netball game that day...Trinity comforted Abbey, who was
worried again about the size of her opponent.. Jack daydreamed, wondering if today would be the day when he would get moved out of the Wing Attack
and have a shot on goal… Sherine gave the Sarahs a prep talk about how to stop themselves from screaming unnecessarily on the netball court during
games… Miss D tried to get the knots out of her stomach from the dream she’d had the night before where the team had been losing, so she’d put her-
self on the court at 3/4 time and promptly had the whole team disqualified… Shay and Sophie looked at their feet with concern hoping that they would
remember not to step...Sumi asked Miss D for the millionth time if she could still play...with a broken arm.
ALL students thought anxiously - will the A team be able to maintain their winning streak and beat the undefeated Kingsbury?
We arrived at the school with a lot of nervous energy to burn, and sized up our opponents. The challenges: Abbey’s opponent was the same size as Mr
P, Sarah H’s opponent had arms as long as Mr T’s, their centre had an angry look on her face that could rival Mr S’s greatest rage. These girls were
going to be difficult to match. The first quarter did not start well. Our girls seemed nervous, really nervous. Lots of rushed passes and fumbles of the
ball meant that Kingsbury were winning at the end of the first quarter 5 goals to 1. Miss D made some quick changes to our line-up for the second quar-
ter. In the second quarter the team was much more settled. Alana and Sarah H were able to score 6 goals between them, and at half time we were
winning by 1 goal.
Abbey’s continuous defence against a player at least 20cm taller than her was inspirational, as she consistently stopped the ball from getting down into
Kingsbury’s goals. Shay’s work in centre to run up and down the court and intercept numerous passes from the opposition was also keeping the game
in our favour. In the third quarter the game was tight and low scoring. Kingsbury outscored us 3 to 1, so the scores at 3/4 time were even. Everyone
was very nervous for the start of the final quarter– probably Miss D the most. The B team got to their feet and were supporting the A team proudly. After
another tight quarter, the whistle blew and the game was over. The final score: William Ruthven 11 goals, Kingsbury 9 goals.
The A team has remained undefeated for the entire season, so have won the premiership. The B team should also be proud of themselves and take
credit for this result, as they provided the support and competition during all training sessions to help all netballers reach their full potential.
Miss D would like to express how proud she is of all the netballers this season, not just for winning the games, but for putting in the effort each week to
come to training, and for supporting each other both on and off the court with a positive attitude. The highlight for the season was when we played Res-
ervoir East and all of their players were very inexperienced and barley knew the rules. Our players supported their opponents beautifully. Teaching
them the rules as they went, purposely staying away from their opposition players and pointing out when players were free and where to throw the ball,
cheering for the other team when they scored goals. Winning the competition is a nice feeling, but there is nothing better than seeing students unselfish-
ly display the school values of Confidence, Compassion and Respect when at another school.
