fallen Sunday afternoon, Thomas H. Williams, 22, 1130 Brinckerhoff

Avenue, Utica, paymaster on the New York State Railways Company, was

carried to the whirling vortex at the foot of the dam and dropped before aid

could reach him. Legs Visible He was taken from the water by his brother, Ellsworth and a brother-in-

law, George Pratt, Brinckerhoff Avenue, Utica, who braved the

treacherous whirlpool into which he had been drawn. Only Williams'

legs were visible above the surface of the water, his head and body

being sucked down by the tremendous force of the whirl. Brought to

the banks, he was given first aid treatment by three doctors,

R.F.Lindsay, R.N. Lindsay and Stuart W. Nelson, all of Old Forge. Resuscitation Fails Artificial respiration was tried by the physicians by resuscitation methods but

they failed. On hour after his body had been brought to the banks, Williams

was declared dead. Dr. James W. Grave, corner, Herkimer, announced an

autopsy would be performed Tuesday. The body was taken to the

undertakers parlors of Leon Eldridge. Thomas Williams, his brother, Ellsworth, and George Pratt, left Utica

Sunday morning for Old Forge on a fishing trip. They were on the banks of

the Old Forge pond for some time when they decided to hire a motor boat.

Ellsworth and Pratt went to the boat livery to make the necessary

transaction, leaving Thomas behind. When they returned they did not see

Thomas where they had left him. A search was instituted, therefore, and

the youth's legs were seen protruding from the surface of the whirlpool. Was 22 Years Old Thomas H. Williams, 1130 Brinckerhoff Avenue, was 22 years old. He was

employed by the new York State Railways as paymaster on the Utica lines.

His work was under supervision of T.P. Whelly, cashier who states Mr.

Williams held the record of being the youngest paymaster employed by the

traction company. He had been with the railway for six years, and his

promotion to the position of paymaster was made two years ago. For a

short time before he took up his work with the New York State Railways, Mr.

Williams was in the curtain department of the John A. Roberts store. When the news of the fatality was telephoned to Utica in the early evening,

his sister, Mrs. Owen Owens with whom the young man made his home, was

out of town on a holiday trip and could not be located. Another sister, Mrs.

George Pratt, 1122 Brinckerhoff Avenue, was prostrated at the news. His father is in California and his mother is dead. A brother, Ellis

Williams of Utica also survives. Drowned in Old Forge at age 22. Lived on 1130 Brinckerhoff Ave, Utica,

NY when he died. Lived with sister Mary. The death of Thomas E.

Williams of 1130 Brinckerhoff Avenue, Utica, which occurred near Old

Forge late Sunday afternoon, was due to drowning, was established by an

autopsy which disclosed that there was water in the lungs. The autopsy

was performed at Old Forge by Dr. Stuart Nelson and Dr. R.N. Lindsay

acting by order of Corner Graves of Herkimer. No external marks were found on the body and how the young man came to

fall into the outlet of the Fulton Chain remains a mystery. The body was taken

from the stream by Mr. William's brother, Ellsworth, assisted by his brother-in-law, George Pratt. Mr. Williams worked as a

paymaster for the New York State railroad. Page 5 of 11 Wednesday, March 04, 2009 9:02:54 AM
