The Berlin Wall 1

• After World War II, America, Britain, France and Russia could not agree on how to govern Germany. Eventually the four countries began to argue and a war broke out between them known as the Cold War. Germany became like two separate countries.

• Eventually the separation became so obvious that on 13th of August 1961, a wall was built which divided Berlin and it became known as the Berlin Wall.

The Berlin Wall: a Germany divided

• The wall separated West Berlin from East Germany.

• In the West, people had lots of money and new technology.

• The standard of living in East Germany was lower than that of the West.

• People from the east were not allowed to visit the west in case they preferred it there and did not want to come back to the east. Generally people from the west could visit the east however. Some people from the east managed to escape but others died trying to escape.

The Berlin Wall 2

• After Hungary opened the border to Austria in August 1989, more than 13,000 East Germans escaped within 3 days. This was the biggest escape since the wall was built.

• There were many protests against the east German government. Eventually a new government took over and allowed free travel again from east to west.

• The wall was knocked down on the 9th of November 1989 and Germany was later officially reunited in October 1990.
